I´ve been playing on and off for years now, and I have built many different cities, but I never really tried to build one with a trainsystem or even a metro system. What are the basics for building a trainsystem?

And one more thing: I did try, for fun, to build rails, and I did it as follows:

One road, then 3 spaces, rail, then 3 spaces and then road again. The trainstation is between the rail and road, and the first 3 spaces have police, fire, etc, the other 3 have commercial. I notice that when I place the station, the arrow points to the road. Is this corrct? And how do you think I´ve done so far?

    Please be gentle....

I think you're doing fine. That is exactly how I design my train system.

I find that the train system is efficient and cheap to provide to Sims but that it does take up a lot of space. To try and maximize riders, try and have certain parts of the city only connected by trains and then place bus stops beside the train stations. I haven't had much luck with freight train stations, though. They only seem to work well if the industries are located in the center of the city map and not on the edges.

Good work jakethedane, the arrow should be pointing to the road because that is where the road acess should be. However you don't have to place rail stations so frequently or you will waste money as some of them won't be used.

Well, thank you for the compliments. I place the trainstations about 20 tiles apart, maybe 25. Now I just need to place the busstops, and I´m all set.

    Thanks guys

Also, in case you did not know, the rail can touch any side of the train station, even just one tile. Only the arrows are req'd to face a road.

And, if you have the NAM, then the puzzle-piece ramps, used to cross over avenues, for example, are still treated as regular tracks and can touch a rail station with perfect functionality. Might look a little odd, but it works.
