in my city right now, 50% is industrial, and 25% is residential and 25% is commercial. Is this realistic? what do you think is a more realistic ratio of zones?

EDIT: I should probably note that i am talking about big cities with all high density zones.

I've always understood that residential will likely be your biggest zone in terms of percent.  In my cities, the ratio is pretty much 55% residential, 45% percent commerical.  (Yes, I don't use industrial in my cities.3.gif)

My cities always seem to function for me.  It is technically possible that some of the sims might be commuting to an industrial job in another city, but my query results have always said that such a possibility is low.

Part of the reason I can get by without industrial might be that I alternate the zoning:

    RCRCRCRC

    CRCRCRCR

    RCRCRCRC

    CRCRCRCR

This results in all of the interior zones getting maximum connection to the other zone type.  Negates much of a need for rail systems or highways.  Give them bus and subway service and it's all I need.

It's 60% residential, 30% commercial and 10% industrial for me, however I use residential halver mod for better realism.

You can have a region without any industry.

I haven't actually gotten to build a region with no industry, but given that my cities tend to be self-contained units and don't use industry, I would imagine it to be entirely possible.

I depends on the time your building, at first it should be about 10% res. 90% agr. then as res. increases industrial increases. At about 60% res. 35% ind. 5%com. your commercial demand will increase and industrial will drop. Also there are regional factors i.e. how much agriculture is in the region and how much dirty industry before commerce will develop in you city.

In the real world, I doubt that they really care about the ratio all that much.  The most important thing is that the people have housing, can get to work, commute around the city, and live their daily lives to the benefit of the city.

In the past, areas of town were zone for residential, commercial, or industrial.  However, city designers are looking to scrap this city design model.  In its place, they hope to incorporate "mixed use" buildings.  Japan's Sky City is an example of this mixed use concept.  City designers are looking to get rid of the "dead zones" that occur in a city once people leave work and go home.  This mixed use design promises to help with that.  Meaning that realisticly, we should start seeing city zoning practices being revamped sometime in the future.

Hey Szarkoz, Can you tell me where I can get that Res-Halver mod? Or can you send it to me.

I've always felt that there were too much residents in the houses, and ratios got messed up, something like this could help me!

I don't think you can do a region without industrial. Whenever I have tried to get rid of industry in all my cities, it kills the demand for residential and especially commercial. The cities won't grow anymore.

I usually have one or two cities with lots of industrial, and that seems to satisfy the region's needs.

If someone did make a region with no industry, I'd like to know how!

per population im not sure but per land are the greater majority of any region is agriculture but in a metro area you are looking at 75% + residential 20% commercial 5 % industrial
