Introduction to Schulmania

This large region will eventually grow into a strong nation. Every story has a starting place. For Schulmania, it is the hilly, wooded island of Schulmanicus. In the region view, no other land can yet be seen – it has not been discovered yet. As the Schulminions venture outward, they will make many exciting discoveries – ones which expand their horizons and ones which will challenge their deepest beliefs and way of life.

The ancestral homeland

We will examine the nation from prehistory all the way to the present. It is a large territory- 8 large tiles wide by 6 tall – forty eight districts in all. That’s a huge territory to tame. Can these Sims do it? We will follow the exploits of the Schulminions, a plucky tribe of Sims who will eventually inhabit Schulmanicus Island, and see the twists of fate which help to lead them from their small island to the farthest reaches of the region.

Introduction to Schulmania

Schulmania is defined as a regal felinocracy. This means that the nation is ruled by a royal house of cats. Benevolent feline rule is extended to all citizens in the nation—both feline and human. Humans have equal rights with cats, but they primarily define their role as following feline directives, such as petting and feeding and brushing. The leader of the national government is the Supreme Wirdle, who was selected at the beginning of civilization for her leadership and hunting skills. She serves as leader for all nine lives and received periodic coronations to amplify her power. She has divided the nation into regions to facilitate a more effective and responsive government. The leaders of these regions (viceroys) are appointed by the Supreme Wirdle and serve at her pleasure. Local officials are generally elected and confirmed by regional authorities. Several vassal organizations exist as well. They serve as representatives of other Schulminion populations and are loyal to the Supreme Wirdle and her government.

Schulmania's Dependencies

Schulmania, itself and through the Bureau of Feline Affairs, has several dependencies and colonies. One colony, the Admiral Islands, is governed by the Kingdom of Schulmanicus, a region in the heartland of Schulmania. The Royal Protectorate of Harar occupies the continental land south of Schulmania and is a Bureau of Feline Affairs dependency.

    Mods Used

A money lot which starts me off at 4.2 billion simoleons. The Sims have expensive taste!

    Toroca Industry Quadrupler

    Coverage Ring Doubler

    Toroca Services Doubler

    Network Addon Module

    Farming Jobs x 50

Of course, I have the "you don't deserve it" on because, like most Sims, I want it all and I want it NOW!

    Map Credit

I added some cities cherry-picked from different regions. A few cities are from the map of Australia by Desz. Some of the cities have been lifted out of these and rearranged. The other tiles have been left blank to be terraformed as discoveries are made. Vandy custom made the capital region map for me.

    Lots

A good 3 dozen or more from SimGoober.

Deadwoods: City Walls & Raised Parks

Gascooker: All sorts of UK packs

NDEX: A lot of great ones

CSX: A lot of great ones

JENX: The many 19th century style Paris buildings as well as the timber frame houses via Xannepan

Porkissimo: A lot of nifty Euro lots

Debussyman: I think I have every lot he ever released!

When some are featured in posts, I will name them as best I can. Unfortunately, I did not keep up with the origins of many lots when I got them (organization was definitely a hindsight thing for me on this!) so there's many more lots I can't name the source for off hand. But, they are great and I am so glad there are folks more talented than me who can design these!

    Schulmanicus: An Ideal Island

The island of Schulmanicus lies in the middle of a vast freshwater sea - the boundaries of which are not known... yet. This hilly, wooded island is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

    prehistoryschulmanicuswideviewml2.jpg

This tile is a modified Tasmania from the Australia map by Desz

In prehistoric times, before any Sims arose on the island, large animals roamed amongst the sylvan glades. The island is in the southeastern quadrant of the region and has a mild year-round climate. Thanks to the moderating influence of the sea, it never snows on Schulmanicus, even in winter. The mild climate encourages a variety of plant and animal life to thrive.

    prehistoryfauna01yf9.jpg

Woodland animals enjoy the bounty of the island

    woodedhillsideje7.jpg

The abundance of resources on the island make it the perfect starting place for any group bent on expansion. The terrain is gently rolling, but there are a few steeper hills.

    prehistoryfauna02sp6.jpg

Prehistoric skyline of the island - trees silhouetted against the azure sky

    woodedlakeda0.jpg

The island is beautiful - too bad the animals did not think to bring cameras!

The shore is not a wide sandy beach but still provides access to fresh water for the animals of the island.

    prehistoryfauna03se5.jpg

A horse strolls along the beach

The biodiversity of the island provides the synergy required for advanced evolution and attracts the attention of the casual, and not-so-casual, observer.

Well, this is going to be good!

I'm guessing, because the sea is fresh water...does this mean it is landlocked? Just a wild stab into the dark, you know.

Looking forward to your next update!

connor_v       Thanks for being my first commenter. Please do check back for more at the story unfolds.

crazychickensc12      Thanks for your kind comment. I have enjoyed a lot of CJs, including yours, which is what compelled me to make mine.

RushHourFreak           Thanks for your comment. By the way, I went to your flag game. I like that. I have got to play that. Flags are cool!

Dadyrghluv      Thanks! Stay tuned for more developments.

Bat            Thanks! I am looking forward to seeing how this region progresses. Please check back to see how we're doing in Schulmania.

Owenluby              Thanks! I thought it would be nice to have a few Sim and non-Sim animals.

Dedgren              Thanks! I might get me a mascot as this gets underway. As the story unfolds, I'll probably need a cat.

PavSek               Thanks! I have been developing away and should have more updates ready soon.

Jacqulina            Thanks! I appreciate your comments. I have seen your CJ and you are great!

chocolatemax285         Thanks! I wanted to show more than just big urban blocks. SimCity offers the player so many options. I want to explore them all rural, suburban, urban, or just natural.

Jrhnemo            Thanks! Check back periodically as this plucky band of Sims starts its quest for world domination.

connor_v           You are correct! The sea is freshwater because as the story unfolds, they will discover that their home was in the middle of an enormous lake.

    Schulmanicus: The Sims Emerge

A lush wilderness like Schulmanicus can't stay pristine forever. Slowly, a small tribe of Sims arose and grew until a small cluster of simple, crude homes grew along a small hill. The tribe, who called themselves "Schulminions" were able to thrive on the island, capitalizing on the herds of large game and lush plant life. The Schulminions developed rudimentary tools and used them to tame the thick forests. Trees were felled to build homes and clear land for cultivation. Small clearings developed where crops were grown. Organized farming was in its infancy, so the plots were small. Survival was tough, even on an island with all the resources a Sim could ever need.

    schulmanicusschmanimals1lz5.jpg

    schulmanicusschmanimals2wl7.jpg

These animals had the run of the island, until.....

    schulmanicusvillagedayok1.jpg

Chopping wood in the new village

Lots in this pic include the small log cabin and the Woodchopper's Cottage

    schulmanicusvillageday2df3.jpg

The small tribe lived in a few small wooden houses around the field they tended. When not working, they often chatted and milled around, pondering life and its essential questions.

    schulmanicusworkininthefieldel1.jpg

These guys must have been very efficient farmers, for there were a lot more millers and chatters than there were farmers.

    schulmanicusvillageatduskeq8.jpg

The village sprang up along the shore. At dusk, the animals strolled by the peaceful village.

    schulmanicusvillageatnightuc9.jpg

At night, darkness descended upon the little village. It was pitch black, as there was no electricity. Fire had recently been tamed, but at a price...

    schulmanicusforestfireli5.jpg

An absence of predators and competition did allow for Schulminions time for exploration and introspection. The whole known world had been discovered and only the boundless sea remained as a barrier. As the Sims pondered their existence, some essential questions remained:

"Who are we?" "Why are we here?" "What lies beyond the endless sea?" "Why is the land divided into these little squares?" This natural inquisitiveness led the Schulminions to develop a society which valued wisdom and led them to domesticate the wisest animal on the island, the cat. This wise move is the main thing that showed that this tribe was smarter than the Sim. This attracted the notice of a meddlesome but well-meaning group of observers.

Hmmmmmm...interesting update. I don't suppose that alien interference will blast these people into a modern standard of life, will it? I like the littel village. It is nice to see a City Journal explore all aspects of Sim City. Looking forward to your next update!

Thanks for your comment. Actually, the intereference is my cover for the anachronisms Sims seem to have- like cars on roads even in ancient times and other out of time props which may appear. Although, for now, I am sticking to ploppables and NAM pedestrian tiles until the Sims are ready to really take off. I want to draw out the older aspects of the society for a while instead of rushing right into skyscrapers and such. I am glad you like the approach I am taking.

Good start so far. I like the nature shots in combination with the in-game pictures, that's a very nice touch. I recommend to turn off the grid by pressing the [ G ] key before you take a screen shot, that would even increase that effect.

The alien interference is a nice twist by the way...

    Keep it up.

The great storytelling and concept of this cj has grabbed my attention unlike any other cj I've looked at. Just something about the way you write made me think for a moment that I was reading a novel not a post in a forum. I really like what you've done so far and eagerly await your next update.

Thanks for the lovely nature shots! I think you established a good blend of ingame shots and real nature shots... and this makes your CJ a really refreshing one! 2.gif The farmlands are very nice and they look great especially in the evening shot!

jacqulina     Thanks for your reply. As the island develops, this group of Sims will do a good job being stewards of the environment.

Nik-nik     Thanks for visiting. I noticed a few broken pics today myself. They weren't broken when I uploaded them. Must be imageshack unpleasantness. I will check back on them periodically. And, if still broken, I will try to re-upload and re-link them. Thanks for noticing!

PhilsCafe     Thanks for your comment. Your are absolutely right! I sorta forgot about toggling off the gridlines and then remembered too late. Oops! I will try to be more attentive.

aleking     Thanks! Glad you like it. Check in periodically and see how the Schulminions are doing!

dadyrghluv     Thanks for visiting. There's no telling yet if these aliens are friendly or not. But, rumor has it that bigger threats than aliens are coming...

edipo_rey    Thanks! I am working on a similar time period and enjoy having yours to look at as well. Are you going to stay in that era or move forward as time goes by?

crazychickensc12 Thanks for your comment. Place and people names are generally derived from people I know or places I like. Sometimes something will be a tip o' the hat to something Sim or just an attempt at humor.

blade2k5     Thank you! That is very thoughtful of you to say. I appreciate your comment. I am trying to approach this like it's a story and not just a landscape to build upon. A new update is just around the corner!

Terrymunweihao    Thank you for your nice comment. I do want to have some sim and non-sim stuff in the CJ. I have seen it done very well in other CJs as I lurked, so I am incorporating the concept in mine. Thanks for reading and for commenting.
