-nuclear (power plant)
(already covered in game)
-nuclear (accident)
"this can occur with anything that may handle radioactive materials"

-war (closed: within city)

First of all...

@salut221. Actaully, its immposible to know unless recorded. The damage from an F-5 is the worst, so you couldn't tell if an F-6 came through.

In the first Sim City, they did have flood. I like all your ideas. All the weather disasters makes it more realistic. You forgot an ice storm and snow storm.

Now, how to code all of that...

quirlx, where are you? 3.gif

I think it would be pretty much impossible, seeing as how much memory SC4 already eats up AND the fact that you just can't really do it without getting into the stuff that's hardcoded into the game, which cannot be put into a DAT or SC4LOT or whatever.

Sorry to rain (or windstorm or snow or tornado or whatever) on your parade.

Good ideas, yes. But next to impossible to implement. AFAIK, disasters are handled by the EXE, and the only decompiled version exists somewhere in the archives of Maxis's computers.

I read a science fiction short story many years ago that took place on a planet that was slightly larger and slightly warmer than Earth. Like Earth, the surface was about two-thirds water and one third land-- except all the land was grouped together into a super-contiant, resulting in an ocean twice the size of (and slightly warmer than) the Pacific. The settelers from Earth ajusted the hurricane scale to add not only F6 but also F7.

which is impossible to get! but if they can be done, by all means i'm up for some of your suggestions, especially the rain, great idea and what it could do to your citys.

Interesting. - Good ideas, I can't deny that, but I'm wondering what it would put into the game...*Nothing yet comes to mind*...Thinking, thinking, thinking...Thinkety, think, think, think...

peter: That's just about the most covered disaster subject here on simtropolis.

i'd have to say "nuclear launch detected" sounds way cooler than "nuclear missile launching"

    F6 tornadoes doesn't exist . .quote>

They say the 1999 Oklahoma city tornado could've maybe been an F6 if that designation existed and the wind speeds were measured accurately on the ground so I've heard...

the F scale actually have F6 because Dr. Fujita himself made it that way, but the different weather agencies do not use it so techically yeah no such thing

BTW, I doubt any of this is really feasible right now. Even with parts of the game's source code it would still be an insane amount of work....

    what about:

    The Black Death

would cause the population of your city to gradually decline till half of the population is dead. Tourism stops, businesses close due to dead owners/employees. virtually no social gatherings between sims (parks and plazas empty). a lot of those who have not died decide to leave the city, many buildings abandoned, long "bread lines," possibly riots, the list can go on and on...

so what do you think? a disease disaster would have been so cool!

Pasturella Pestis is not likely to hit an inland city.  It is most likely to be transmitted by rats off foreign ships.  Rats to fleas to other animals to man.  How about a nice viral haemorrhagic fever like Ebola, instead?

These are all great ideas, but they sound really hard to code, probably not even something that could be done in SC4...

all the ideas are great, but if i could i would like to give few new disaster idea:

    1. mud flow (it happens when the intensive rain drop into steep slope like in Venezuela)

    2. groud flux (it happens at the same time with earthquake)

I think anilber and N_O_Body brought out some really important point - simctiy 4 assumes that there will not be any disease outbreaks... ebola and black death would be fine, just any population health crisis will make simcity 4 disaster more realistic.

We really need waves, I mean, the incorporation of water physics into the game. If you try making a lake then make a big meteorite crash into it, upon impact a little splash is created and nothing me. If water physics are incorporated large waves can be created... not feasible in the short term since it requires restructuring the entire game since if physics are incorporated it makes the game more demanding. Underwater earthquakes can lead to tsunamis, metorite crashing into the water can bring up large waves and etc...

I am thinking that if dams can be built in the game, maybe earthquakes and heavy rains can trigger it's collapse... and heavy rains can also cause flooding in low lying areas (again, physics needs to be incorporated into the game). And this is even more possible and realistic if simcity 4 allows construction below sea level (like in the netherlands).

Like what antaryjczyk have pointed out, we need landslides too! And soil liquefaction during an earthquake will also add to the extend of damage. Simnce simcity 4 also have network tunnels (like roads, rail, highway) maybe the game can randomly but not too often create disasters like tunnel collapse, tunnel fires. And if the tunnels are underwater (e.g. tunnel going under water, idea adapted from the movie "Daylight"), maybe the tunell fire leads to tunnelt flooding.

Looks like I got carried away... 18.gif

    You forgot...

Volcano (already in game, but should be divided to types)

Hawaiian Eruption- The lava flows gracefully.

Strombolian Eruption- A fountain of lava shoots beautifull (but deadly) lava bombs.

Plinian Eruption- Remember Dante's Peak? Well this is similar.

    Bombs

Structural Collapse (as in the collumns weaken and snap...)

Plane Crash (only works when you have an airport, choose from a Cessna to a 747)

    Derailment

Train Collision (I don't if this is possible now)

All very great suggestions for disasters. I hope some of them get implemented in Simcity 5.

Maybe throw a really sick volcano such as St. Helens in there and you got ash all over your region.

I think a mod or an admin with more confidence in the process than I should add this to the future discussion thread here.

Proper thread for this already exists.  -- closed.  NOB
