Yoman- Yes some people really dont have a sense of architecture, but thats okay MrFingers, I on the other hand know my architecture well. ( not to brag of course)2.gif

Lol, I actually do know a fair bit about architecture. Being a Physics major, a mechanical engineer for a year and a year long intern at an architecture firm does educate you somewhat on buildings. I just want something absolutely huge, the manhattan middle finger to the muslim extremists.  Make it a feat of engineering.  Actually I have an idea of the design in my head, lemme see if i can find a way to show it to you....

We don't need to go there.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

JWUC- Thanks, I agree on Boston City Hall, horrid building in my opinion. I also think that you're right, and we can talk all we want, but time really will be the only way to tell. As of now, i'm happy with what is in the plans. Everyone else, thanks for the kind words.

You need to realise that there is more to a building than what you see on the ground.

sky scrapers have a vast mass of foundations sometimes these can be over 100m deep and take months to pile then any basements will need to be constructed and waterproofed properly and all major services into the building will have to be dug and placed in, this would include a large sewer connection.  All these things take alot of time and seeing floors built at 1  every 2 days or so, its because that is easy compared to what had to be done below ground.

I know, I know.......foundations for a highrise are importent but you need to realize that over 4 years have passed since the last steel beam of the WTC was hauled away.  And what do we see?

A ramp and subway rail......thats it.

With Modern saftey procedures it takes around 3 years to build and fit out a skyscraper so dont expect it to come along in an instant.

Edit: Also, i believe the old designs were awfull, allthough they were part of the skyline i really disliked them.  Im a fan of blue glass hi rise (and personally i feel that anything above 70 floors is too tall) allthough NYC can handle the skyline dent. But the freedom tower is blue glass 9.gif

I believe this building is being built by capitalists from around the world. I see no government involvement here. 2.gif

mrfingers: they have them invovled because they are the ones that own the lot!!21.gif  Its the same as it was when they were buiding the WTC, they had everybody invovled, because they are the owners of the lot and buildings.

Illtonkso: I could really disagree more with saying that a building over 70 stories is to tall , I see that that is your opinion, but in my view the bigger the better.5.gif

o0o0 and the Empire State Building was built only in a year is because  for 1, it was a race for the tallest, 2 the design made it very easy to build.  The steel gurters were lighter than other steel beams they used before.
Today buildings take a while because WE know that a building cant just be plopped here like the Empire State Building, nowadays technology has gotten far more advanced and the way they build with the concrete core, well lets just say that that is a new way of building buildings, PLUS this building is going to be the safest and most advanced building in the world, so you must take your time with this project..  Thats all I really have to say........................... today, just wait till the next day2.gif3.gif

That maybe, but technology and materials have also facilitated better building methods, tools, equipment and materials - without a doubt. That should more than make up for any complexity. The fact is, governments are monuments of waste.

Ok, good. 3.gif I thought you were implying one of those pre-9/11 conspiracy theories. 21.gif

So is this truly the final design? I don't see why we don't make it the tallest building in the world!

Edit: Yeah, sure, we may not know the size of Dubai's building, but let's make it so tall that it would be hard to pass that height for a pretty long time.

@manman99: Actually i heard that New 7 World Trade Center is the safest in the world.16.gif

@MrFingers:  True, but with those breakthoughs come new challenges and dangers, which may be why it takes so long to make a high-rise in the 21st century.

@Micah:  the Burj Dubai will be 2,650 ft tall2.gif

It would take a building the size of the WTC site itself to compete with Burj Dubai.

it is........................ at the moment, but when the Freedom Tower will be finished, that building will be the safest in the world.

Remember it went to an international design competition, the winners design was ended up being thrown out, a new design was done (thats 1 year already).  These days Health and Safety, beurocracy etc. has to be got passed, then theres the workforce to employ and all the specialists not forgettin that competition entries are only what the building looks like and a basis of structure not full working drawings it can be imediately built from

.  Full working drawings would have to be procured from architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, utility engineers, mechanical and environmental consultants, health and safety consultants etc etc.  all in all for a building of that size its a very time consuming operation, especially as it involves as you say an underground station etc, then you have material order lead in times, steel has to be fabricated for the foundations, mass concrete has to be poured frames have to be manufactured, cables pipes etc.

For a specialist building i.e. a skyscraper these things are not bought "off shelf" but have to be designed manufactured specially for it which takes time.  I am a design proffessional and I know that people do not realise how much has to go into a building design, procurement and construction wise before you see any results above ground.

I hope the above gives you a tiny insight into the mass of work that has to go on behind scenes before a building is even started.

Well yes, work has actually been done. But those 5 years can be overwhelming accounted for by arguments between silverstein, the PA, the city gov, the NJ state gov and the NY state gov. Any new yorker will tell you that every week there is the same story of indecision and interference.

Dont forget feasablity studies, design and development, prototyping, proposal, approval meetings, public consultation groundwork. And of course, many were not yet prepared to just build on the mass graveyard that was ground zero in an instant.

thats not five years. your final point is extremely debatable and new yorkers are known for battling through bad times. same with londoners actually.

Mr Fingers- yes thats quite true New Yorkers are the toughest of the tough, no doubt about that, but some people around the country are still traumatized, mostly NY, NJ and Connecticut, we felt it the most, and stop speaking for New York because everyone in that city has their own opinions and what not.

But to me 5 years is a good enough amount of time for the projest to be started,  MrFingers your making this sound that they should have built new buildings the day after it happened.  These things take time, especially because of the impact its going to leave on New Yorkers.  I mean Im not against you ,but Im not with you either.
