Hey guys,

Its been awhile snce I have posted here. I bought a house and educated myself on how to lay hardwood and tile. It was an 8 week project.

Ok now my question. The house we bought is actually next door to my wifes sister and 2 houses down from her brother. (we have our own little community I know).

Well I would like to bring them into to 21st century with internet service. My wifes sister has dial-up and her brother doesnt even have service.

My plan was to get the best possible Broadband connection possible and let them leech of of my connection via wireless routers. They are approximentally 200ft. and 275ft. from my house.

Ok what I need is a a wireless router that can reach them and handle the load. Money is not really a concern here.

Your recommendations or insight are helpful,

thanks,

trigger

Simplest thing is to get wireless repeaters. These are little boxes that create a "relay" and increase the range of the wireless network. However, you need to make sure they are all the same brand as the main wireless modem router, so they all talk the same language and configuration is made easy. Also, the main router needs to be able to transmit at least double the distance you need, as the signal will degrade and be blocked by buildings.

visit Netgear for their products, which are excellent

Also, make sure you password protect the network otherwise your entire neighbourhood can share the fun.

I would reccomend Belkin. They have a lifetime warranty and are very easy to setup. The only other brand I have owned is Linksys and one bummed out on me after 2 months but one is still going strong - so it's a 50/50 there.

And, yeah, do that repeater thing and just make sure to secure the network. Also, be weary of the new stuff coming out like Draft N. I've heard that it isn't worth the money and to wait until they drop in price. I use a G+MIMO and it's great.

Good luck!

The distances you say are way too far for a good wireless connection. If money is no issue, then go out and get 3 wireless routers and connect them in each home. However, if it's just for PC's, I would stick to ethernet (broadband). The cable connection is much more reliable, plus it saves the hassle of buying wireless cards and routers. Having them leach off of your connection is just not reliable at all.

I have a Dell router, which is about 80 bucks, but it's very reliable, and works great throughout the house.

Always remember to protect your network with a password.

@The_Family_Guy: He wants to share his broadband connection between 3 separate houses, I don't think the neighbours would appreciate a 200m run of CAT5 across their lawn.

Wireless reception out in the open with no obstructions, would be up to 200 feet, but inside a building with walls, etc, would cut it down to 80 or so feet. Most units you buy would be IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards, or at least a/g compatable. The fastest is a, but the most used, and most likely to incounter interference from the neighbors. The slowest, and oldest standard is the g, but also the one less likely to incounter interference.

Edit:  most broadband suppliers don't mind how many computers you run off the connection in the same house, but when it comes to the other houses, they are going to balk.
