Bleh, I wouldn't pay too much attention to what it says when you query the building. Unless it's just slow updating it's information. I've queried a house where all of the commuters literally walk across the street and it's said 'long' before.

Ooooh, I think I see what the problem is. Is it all of your mansions that have this 'long' commute and are abandoning? Because I don't see too many $$$ jobs there. If there are not enough $$$ jobs, the R$$$ will leave/abandon.

Here's an idea. Pump the R$$$ taxes up to like... I dunno... maybe 12% or or the like. Then as your city grows, gradually lower it back down. A lot of people have this very same problem, even with large cities. Just remember that you can control demand (and therefor development) to a certain extent with taxes. Tired of dirty industry stinking up the place? Jack their taxes up to 20%.

The R$$$ taxes only affects the high-wealth residential buildings. CO$$$ CS$$$, and HT$$$ both have their own tax controls as you can see in the tax thingy. Raising high wealth residential taxes will not affect high wealth commercial and industrial development.

That was a nice solution! XD

Well San Andreas is right, make roads where it is needed. Try searching for the theory on commute times and try to check out the Omnibus on how to improve your commute times. I keep mine somewhere between 30-35 mins but I've been more devious in applying one-ways, rails and subways (no highways, mind you) i've reduced it to 20-18 mins. I'm only experiencing medium commute times. also, don't concentrate on what the query tool says (It sucks!) Just look at the commute times, if it's taking your sims 30 mins to get from that small area, somethings wrong with the game. Also, try to follow where the sims are travelling most. I've observed that your comm. area has only one road connecting it to the residential but no roads are connecting to the industrial area. maybe the street on the other side should be upgraded to road. Oh, I forgot... you build a volcano over it... XD well, that could help all that's reading this thread and you in your next towns and cities.

    take care,

    Charles

iv built subways before and they never seem to help

only a few ppl use them

can ya gimme some tips on cutting commute times to plz?

oh and i didnt have a connection to a neighboring city for a reason

the only neighbor was my garbage district (a bunch of waste to energy plants)

and i cut the connection cuz my sims kept tryin to work there and complaining cuz it was to far away

Do you have any bus stops?  No matter how small my cities are, I always install bus stops from the very beginning in order to avoid the problem you're having.

even then the rich buttheads wont use em

Exactly and maybe instead of one way roads in your new city try an avenue, they look alot better and are great on commute times.   Also, with the $$$ sims im your city and your taxes raised demolsih the houses... it will get rid of the unwanted waste of  "abandoned" space.

That is the point of avenues. I use one way roads to direct the sims to the avenues so they can use them to get to work. Always remember sims will always take the shortest route not the fastest. That is why you have to force them to the fastest route by using one way roads. It takes very careful planning and pretty much has to be thought out before hand. You just can't slap zones down wherever and then build mass transit and expect the sims to figure out the fastest route because they won't. If the jam packed street is a shorter route than the empty highway they will take the street and complain every time.
