How do you place text on pictures?

Okay, I know that that may sound like a stupid question, but how do you place text on pictures? The text boxes in Word cover up the picture when I put it on the picture, and other ways you can't change the color. I've done it before, so I know there's a way. And if anybody knows how sloppet did his text in his update banners...

...please tell me how to do it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe you'll need something better than Word, like Photoshop. But if you'd like to do it in Word, try to right click on the text box, click on something like "edit box" and then you can change the background to transparent or something like that (I've got the swedish version myself so I'm not sure what everything's called... 3.gif )

Photoshop, MSPaint (sic), Paint Shop Pro...any photo editor will have the ability to place text over images...but there is a way in Word..if I remember I'll let you know...You could always use Powerpoint and export slide as JPEG

mambomumba: There is no "edit box" button or anything like it. However, is there a good way to do it in GIMP or Irfanview?

Use MS Paint. It is easy. Make a text box and type into it! Just don't screw up because you cannot edit it later. Also, make sure you set it to transparent background... which can be done on the tool panel, really easily... Hope this helps.

It does. In the swedish version it's called "Formatera Textruta" but I guess it's the same symbol in your's:

mambomumba: Okay, this is what I'm getting:

I can get the words on top of the picture, but I can't make the box go transparent. And yes, there is a format box option...

    Clipboard0119.jpg

...but nowhere in the options does it let me make the box transparent.

Skyfire: I can't get it to work in MS Paint either.

It seems like we don't use the same program or the same version. I use Microsoft Word 2000, that might explain the whole thing.

Right click the image and select the layout tab. On that tab select the "Behind text" option.

I can see you're using Works. I've never use it before, but I guess you would find something similar to this.

    Cheers

    -Open you image in paint.

    -Select the text tool (1)

    -Select transparent backgound (2)

-Draw a text box... for the text toolbar, it is in the "View-->Text Toolbar" menu and you can change you font and size there, chnage the colour at the bottom on the colour toolbax.

    -Type away.

-When you are done, you CANNOT edit it again.

    Hope this helps.

Rayden: Isn't Microsoft Works Word Processor and Microsoft Word the same thing? If not, I guess I'm screwed.

Skyfire: It works like that, but how do you center it, how do you change the size of the font, and how do you type more than on 1 line?

The Gimp is like photoshop, but it's free. You can get it at www.gimp.org. It's very easy to use.

Wow.. some people telling you to use paint, some people even telling you that you can use Word! 45.gif

Photoshop, of course, would be the best option. But since its an $800 program, The Gimp will work just fine.

GO HERE to download it, and you may also have to download and install the GTK environment.

Drag and drop a picture into it, and you get something like this:

    untitled1iu9.th.jpg

Click on the big "T" button on the main toolbar, and you get a ton of options for font color, font, size, antialiasing, ect.

    untitled2wf2.th.jpg

Click anywhere on the picture and type out what you want in the pop up text box, and then change the font and font color and experiment with everything else till you get what you want.

At this point, click close on the text box, go to File > Save, and your done. Or, you could enhance your text, and your picture, with diffrent effects.

    untitled3rb1.th.jpg

I did this in a couple seconds, with a few clicks. The bevel on the text didn't turn out very well, to see a better version of beveled text click my sig picture and take a look at the title of my journal. You can do a ton of things with The Gimp, and I would only call myself a novice user.

For Sim City 4 pictures, most of what you want to use can be found "Tools", "Filters," and "Script-Fu" Menus. And the main toolbar, of course.

Just play around with things, and if you need any more help with anything, send me a PM.

Both Paint and Photoshop do well, but Photoshop CS give you effects to play around with the text.
