Noob questions on seaport

I'm an experimenting $%&^! getting to grips with the concepts of the game. These forums are a tremendous help. However, some questions I can't find the answers for:

1) How do I connect my railroads to a port?  Do I place a freight station next to the port? Right against or just close by?

2) Do I need a road connection to make the port work?

3) My coastline is a bit steep, so when I place a port, it ends up in a hole. How do I avoid this?

4) Are ports NIMBYs?

5) Does each seaport increase the industry cap? By how much? Does it matter how much it is used?

Hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance

1. You need either to have the industry very near the port (they will enter by road or via rail transfer)

2. yes

3. either level the land first (to very close to the water level) or ignor it.. the verticle distance is ignored in SC4 as long as things are "adjacent"

4. Not In My Back Yard

5. You can read on the seaport itself whether it is reaching a limit just like the airport. Its capacity is also adjusted by the "seaport" line in the budget item for "seaports" (Use the ? query)

Thanks for your answers SC4BOY. I'm still unclear on a couple of points.

    1) How exactly does rail transfer work? Can I just connect my railroad directly to the port?

    5) How exactly does the capacity and number of ports influence the industry cap? (I'm a bit of a number cruncher)

    Thanks again for your help.

May I suggest the Upgradeable Seaports Revamped by MrTruesage. https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=16217

They Rock & They Work! Read the description carefuly as it does require Swampers support file. The pakage also comes with a freight train station to attach to the port that accepts rail traffic.

    Thanks for the suggestion, danurve.

For the moment I just want to learn the basics before I start modding.

The ports in SC4 are a bit of a letdown compared to SC3000, IMHO, so I might consider it later.

Default railroad freight does not unload at the default Seaport. [there are mods to do that]

You need a road next to the seaport, it does not go onto it.

The only solution to the hole it makes is to lower the terrain around the water.

The ports are not either, NIMBY, or YIMBY.

I don't think the Seaport has much effect on the industry cap.

I would also suggest the PEG CDK Seaport, either bigredfish's, which replaces the original, or Swamper77's (in STEX as "Additional CDK Seaport"), which can be used alongside the original, as well as the Upgradeable Seaports. The PEG CDK Seaport is smaller, and has a built in freight station to transfer freight from trains to ships.
