A Lot ofLot Names..

A question for all the genial minds out here: I'm in the habit of renaming stuff like airports, utilities, etc. But that can get quite tedious. Is there any way - on a city to city basis - one could name, for example, all subway and GLR stations to more meaningful name? Also, some of the custom stuff I picked up here tends to revert back to its installed name once the city is saved and restarted. Can I avoid this? This is not to take anyone's credit away from where its due, and it may seem trivial, but it adds to the simulation - at least for me.

Probably the simplest thing to do would be to clone the lot with the lot editor, then fix the name with the SC4Tool.  This will let you change the name to anything you want, but would be fixed for that lot.

A clone made with the lot editor without renaming it will replace the game lot.

I think what you are trying to do is generate a random name for each station. This is not possible with SC. I don't know how to help, but do you really query or click the lots that often?

I'm what you might call an organisational freak - I like things just right. Thus the main cost & income items are renamed. Hospitals, Clinics, Train Stations, Special Transit systems. To names that would make sense in the real world. When you have seven large medical centres, differentiating between them in stats and displays makes sense and is even helpful. But it ought to be possible on a city basis - not regional or game wide

I used to do that a lot also in my smaller cities. The ones where it seems better to have things named after someone importiant...

I dont think theres a way to change ALL of the same buildings in one city with one click, so it may be easier to just name them all different, like if its a subway station call it somthing like '4th Ave. & Main Subway'

And The Convention Center is now a "Star Trek Cnvention Center"

And a Office Accorss the street from it called "Enterprises" is now called "U.S.S. Enterprise"

I may have misrepresented my idea. We do know SC4 keeps track of renamed buildings because most of its civic buildings return with the proper name change intact, when you restart. It's strictly city based. What I am looking for is a reader, writer, editor - whatever, that let's me access that file, edit and save it. This may not exist, but..

    Hands Off,

A lot of the ploppable custom content uses the property "Item Name" to name the buildings. Unfortunately, if you rename one of these lots, you rename them all. To solve this, add the "User Visible Name Key" property to the building exemplar with the Reader with the value "0,0,0". This will allow you to rename the buildings and have the names stick. This also fixes the issue of "name one, name them all" as I described above. I have been systematically adding the "User Visible Name Key " property with value "0,0,0" to various transit station lots as I come across them. So far, I haven't had any problems when I have done this and the stations are keeping their names after I "save and quit" the game.

You'd be refering to iLive's Reader? Actually, I do think that some of the creative minds here force their lots and bats to return to the original name. In SC4, renaming one clinic does not rename all; only ever happened to a busstop picked up here..

I've looked into that but could not make it work. For one, there are two Examplar files - and I am a novice idiot to all this editing stuff. In many instances I found the User Visible Name Key to contain Hex values other than 0. Did not dare to change other folk's work for fear of craashes. Where I did add it it still changed the name back to its original - except for original SC4 civic buildings. What am I doing wrong?
