When I plopped the DRL it shows up as low desirability on my analysis grid.  According to the SimCity 4 guide by Thy451 the DRL is supposed to have no negative residential effects and highly positive commercial effects.  What gives?

The exact area it occupies has radiation if you click on the radiation tab in the data view. But doesnt spread over the boundary of the lot so it doesn't effect the zones/buildings close to it

I don't recomend putting the Lab aywhere near RES areas....it's affects is the radius of the lot like said above, but the lot effects the enire city no matter where placed...4.gif
If your unhappy with radiation effects on their by the Labs try this mod:

few other have this effect on the view charts...15.gif
or shop around on the STEX...for a custom made rewards...4.gif

Thanks, Tolomar. Right now I'm trying to stick to only in-game mods for this experimental city.

Can anyone confirm that the DRL has a positive influence on commercial zones? Thanks again.

Fightcancer, unfortunately Tolomar is wrong. There is absolutely no problem with placing the disease research lab in a residential area, except for the radiation which another poster already pointed out stays within the building limits.

The disease research lab has no effect on residents, but it does have a positive effect on commercial (+40 effect with a 20 tile radius).

So, while it's harmless to put it in a residential area, it probably makes a bit more sense to place it in a commercial area where it has some positive benefits.

It also acts as a residential demand cap reliever.

The Disease Research Centre is sort of weird. First thing, it's supposed to increase residential lifespan. And yet, it's radiation is killing people. Weirder still, it is housing patients. Don't you think those patients would be killed by the radiation?

kaploosh: All major hospitals have lots of radiation on their campuses. That's what they use for radiotherapy, chemotherapy, etc... It is just well stored. Most universities have lots too. I think the game designers tried to take this into account by making the radiation on cover the exact footprint of the lot. So, those patients are not being killed by the radiation, but are probably being healed by it.

It's too bad that the disease lab didn't act to decrease hospital demand to the same degree that the central library relieves the usage of the local libraries. I find that this game needs too many hospitals if the city has a high pop.

Exactly my thoughts, Bones1. Thanks for the help everyone.

Does anyone know if the DRL increases the health of my sims?

Yes, the disease lab does have a positive affect on health thoughout the city, although it's quite small.

OK, I've made my decision. Right now my life expectancy is over 90 without the DRL and I'd rather spend the $130/mo. on a statue, ordinance, or landmark.

You don't have to fully fund the DRL. Just fund it enough so that the capacity is a little more than the number of patients. Usually, $50/month is more than enough in most cities. $10 or $20 may do fine. But if you're hurting for cash that much, you've got bigger problems.
