Automata and BATs by Mikeseith

Just thought I'd formally introduce myself to the Simtropolis community and set up a space to expose people to the joys of creating and downloading new automata to the game. I wasn't sure where to put this thread. Hopefully this is a good spot for it.

I guess my obsession with cars in SimCity started with SimCity 3000 Unlimited. I'm not sure if anyone remembers but the BAT came with a lousy 3 vehicle props and that wasn't nearly enough for a decent parking lot. So I went on the internet to find car props and found none. Then I recolored the sedan, and it went well, then I branched out to new vehicles. A short time after that I set up a web site:
Mike's props
so I could share my creations with fellow BATers.

When SimCity 4 came out I looked forward to making new props for this game. I think it was when I got my copy of Rushhour and I was handed a bonus disc with new vehicle automata that an idea formed. Maybe I can make new cars to run in the game! I spent about a year trying to find out if it was truly possible. Thanks to the help I got here on Simtropolis I was finally able to make cars (mind you I have never attempted to make a mod for a game up to this point).

Up to this point I have made about 25 different cars and a couple trams, see
light rail mod help
to find them.

Here are a few pictures of traffic in a city with a large variety of vehicles...I think it looks a little more realistic. Note. I always host my pictures off site to free up Simtropolis space.

I hope to get some feedback and maybe some pointers on creating new vehicles in the future. Also from time to time I will shamelessly promote my newest projects here.

Speaking of shameless self-promoting...here are a few pictures of my latest dealership. I will be uploading it today sometime, hopefully.

Here is the landmark version.

My appologies to everyone at Simtropolis. But I couldn't bear to see that badly mangled title on my last thread. I am now squatting here.

Heh, I sure know how being busy feels.

But anyway, if you can find the time, could you create some classic cars, such as a `57 Ford, preferably. I would sure like to see them in my game.

I dont have a real request...just keep doing what your doing...I love seeing your work in the game. I have all of the most recent work in my city..and some of your older stuff to...my favorite was the Ford mustang you did..I even made a small movie with it in there. Great work and I look foward to seeing what you have in store for us next.

Your freedom is the most expensive thing you have, even if you arn't the one that paid for it... Use it well.

    Hello,

is there a way to create a plugin with a passenger train engine and passenger cars what should neither replace the original train nor mix engines and cars with the original ones - so that there are two kinds of passenger trains in the game but both with it's own engine/car combination?

I experimented on that last week but results were:
    - train cars like busses on streets
    - de-activation of the whole automata and all UDI missions
    - mixed passenger trains
    - game crashes

Actually, I'm working on that right now, GoaSkin. This is because I want the game to have a special class of trains for Intercity Service.

That way, trains like the TGV and ICE don't have to replace the normal commuter trains.

It'll be released as the first ever NDEX modd, with some cool-looking models for the new trains type. Then, modders can simply replace the new train model, instead of replacing the old one.

    *hands thread back to mikeseith*

Fairlane500, I will try to create some classic vehicles to throw into your cities. Maybe even a slightly cheesy used car lot to go with them.

andreue, I will put BMWs on my todo list, but be warned it is a long list and I am putting in alot of overtime at my work now. If I get to it, it may take awhile.

Andreas Roth, My harddrive died some time ago (that is part of the reason for my extended absence). I had the german taxis, some honda lifes (japanese only car I believe), and about 6 other car models ready to go with no backup. You gave me a reminder that I want to make those german taxis again. I will get on that also.

goaskin, I have been keeping track of your unelevated-elevated rail mod. So far I am very impressed. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the good words everyone. I will post updates here every now and then to give a preview of my latest work. No news yet.

    Hi mikeseith,

I was using the info from your website to try this out. Following you directions I was able to make something. However, I came to relize that I need to create a wire frame for what I want to do.

Can you point me in the right direction for how to do that?

    Thanks,
    Phred

    Phred,
You can export the 3d model from ilive reader as a .3ds file. Find the s3d file in the dat, click it. You will see a little button on the right side of the screen that says 3ds functions. Click it and you will have the option to import or export 3ds. I have found that using a very cheap program called Milkshape give the best results. The program is a little hard to use but if you stick with it, it gets better.

Go to http://www.milkshape3d.com and get milkshape. Try the 30 day free trial.

Aw, that's too bad - hopefully you didn't lost too many data. Anyways, take all the time you need. If it's possible, they should replace the in-game taxis, since they rather fit in an American town, but not a German one.

I really love your work. It brings a lot of variety to this boring game 19.gif

I just have a question : have you tried to create motorcycles. There are very few in the original game !

    Hello all.
I will always come back here for my inspiration for the next project. Next up: I think a group of really cheap cars and fairly old cars. Maybe a used car dealership to go with them.

    fredval,
I have never attempted a motorcycle, and to tell you the truth, probably won't attempt one for awhile.

    casper3141, bookworm and el jimjim,
Your preferences are dully noted. The 87 cameros may just fit into the fairly old and cheap catagory. I'll see what I can do.

If you are going to go as far back as that Impala, how about doing my first car and the only car that still turns my head: a 1967 Mustang Convertible.  There are plenty of images to be found.

I think I have given up on my idea of making some horse drawn wagons and such (Wedding carriage, buckboard, etc). Can't get the hang of the wireframe work. Maybe someone else will think that is unique enough to try.

First, I would like to thank you for all the incredible work that you do, and being as generous as to share with the rest of the community. I was wondering if it was possible to fulfill a personal request for an automata, if it not take up too much of your time, that is. My brother is a college student in Boston, and he owns a brown 1987 Acura Legend. I would like to be able to download an automata of 1986-88 Acura Legend model if possible. Thanks for reading thorugh this and hearing me out.
