Hi, welcome to the forum. If you're talking about turning normal streets into one way roads then you have to demolish the existing street or road before you can build the one way road. The direction that sims travel on the road depends on which direction you drag the cursor when putting in the road. Hope that helps.

one-ways are only available if you have the rush hour expansion (or SC4  Deluxe).  Also, you can use the NAM for the 2-way to 1-way transition.

What is the utility of one-way roads? Can you give some specific examples of when you would use them?

Thank you for your time. 4.gif

One-way roads are primarily used in packed downtown areas of large cities to account for the massive amount of cars that travel downtown to their nice cushy offices in a mid-rise building or skyscraper. However, in-game I sometimes use them to make an avenue with a one tile medium to put flora in. Hope this helps.

Well, maybe the following screenshots from my CJ (now on hiatus) might help a little 5.gif (NOTE: This is by no means to promote my CJ) You can see that I chose to use one way roads to be my major throughfares in my city because it is simply very populated and avenues can't handle the traffic. I don't want to use highways because it limits the connections available.

In addition, you can beautify the median of the two opposite direction one way raods! 3.gif

I've read that when calculating commute time, the game only calculates the morning commute and then doubles the time. If roperly planned out this should be possible to exploit using one-way-roads. You could build a road network with good connetions TO the work places, but with only one back. There would be massive traffic jams in the evening rush, but the game engine wouldn't take this into consideration.

One ways are useful if you have loads of traffic, but don't want to demolish nearby buildings with avenues. Make oneways run opposite to each other by block.

    I didn't know that!

Has anyone done any experiment to show this?

I've found, using some real life locations as examples, that one way roads can also be efectively put to use in small towns. I've based a number of layouts off of Quincy, California, and Pendleton, oregon, where a one way road runs through the main business district, and another parallel road runs the opposite direction, except not through the main business district.
Or, such as Madraa, Oregon, the business district spans two parallel one-way roads running opposite directions.
