Lewis and Clark Expedition

This won't really be a city journal, since it will have no cities.  The idea is to explore some of the terrain that lies along the Lewis and Clark's trail to the Pacific.  The trees and terrain textures shown in these pics are part of a big terrain mod thingy I've been working on for a while.  The mod isn't finished yet, but when it is, I'll be uploading it or posting a link.  (The trees might be ready in a few weeks.)19.gif

This is the site of Fort Mandan (in present day North Dakota), where the members of the Lewis and Clark expedition spent the winter of 1804-05.  (They had spent much of 1804 travelling from St. Louis to here.)

On April 7, 1805, they loaded up their boats, and began the second year of their journey up the Missouri River.  Their goal was to seek out the headwaters and then find a way over the mountains to the Pacific ocean.

Capt. Lewis wrote:
We are now about to penetrate a country at least two thousand miles in width, on which the foot of civillized man had never trodden; the good or evil it had in store for us was for experiment yet to determine, and these little vessels contained every article by which we were to expect to subsist or defend ourselves.  I could but esteem this moment of departure as among the most happy of my life

A closer view of the departure point

A herd of horses on a grassy hill.  The horses may have been wild or they may have belonged to some of the Mandan or Sioux who lived in the area.

Deer roaming near some cottonwoods at the edge of the river.

The expedition had to travel against the river current month after month.  Here is a view of some river bars formed by the current.

And finally, a closer view of one of the smaller side channels of the river (featuring PEG's excellent water texture).

Hey CycleDogg wow, this is amazing. I love the lush green terrain and the wild flowers and, wait... are those fallen down tree branches?? The rocks and cliffs are so spectacular! It reminds me of Age of The Empires. This is seriously so beautiful and will add so much characture and realism to SC4. The trees look amazing too! There are such much variety. I think that this will be the best MOD ever to come to this game. I am speechless... AMAZING work.

[EDIT]: I just noticed in the last picture that there are rocks under the water level. WOW!

    Awesome concept CycleDogg...

are your cities within a region similar to the actual trail (at a much smaller scale I'm sure)?

Very nice work on that mod.  I like the journal... maybe you should call this one a Terrain Journal.

I work for the US Army. I go places, visit mean people, and kill them.

Winston Churchill is generall credited for saying something to the effect of: "People sleep soundly in their beds because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf". That about sums up my life, besides the "rough men" part.

Wow! That is beautiful terrain and a fantastic modd! The only thing that bugs me a little is, do you think you could make the flowers smaller, or fewer of them, or something like that? The hills and ground in region view also look sort of fake.

Boy, this is beautiful. I can't wait to see the modd released.

You must have worked on it for a long time, especially to get the tree placement that you did. I can't control the trees very much at all.

One question, though - how do the flowers work? Are they new land textures, or are they actually flora models? Wait a minute - you used opacity-mapped planes, didn't you? It turned out excellent, either way. Just hope it doesn't slow the game too much. (I'll still use it, even if it does!)

Oh wow..I cant wait for that mod..I dont remeber being this exsited about anyother projects...so cool...oh, my god...'m hyperventilating.....breathe....exhale...breathe...exhale...

Cycle dog that is just some great modding work. The fallen tree on the bank....the detail...I think this is the closest SC4 has come to real life yet. Keep up that great work. This mod when finished looks like it will be on my list for the Trixies the next time they roll around.
