Man, I have such a dilemna.... As an adult with an actual job and responsibilities now, I'm finding it harder to justify purchasing games.  Usually it's a cost issue, or a time issue, but now....

Either
1) Get GTA: San Andreas tomorrow

or

2) Finish my Graduate Thesis

The Thesis has to be DONE by August, and I've got a lot of work left to do.  I'm worried that I will be too absorbed in GTA:SA to be able to finish on time.  Also, if I wait, it's an extra incentive to finish quickly.

The kid in me (still a very large part) screams out to get it, cuz it'll be 2 and 1/2 months before I get it if I wait until the Thesis is over with....

Sure, graphics are nice but for a console developed game like GTA:San Andreas, it's not like Rockstar developed any special Direct X 9 lighting and transform for the PC version. It's simply just a console port. Sure, maybe with the right setup you can get higher resolutions and some antialiasing but the fact of the matter is you're just looking at textures developed for PS2s Emotion Engine and GPU, without any engine enhancements, it's like paying a PS1 game with Bleem. You're gonna get some graphical enhancements, but it's not going to blow you away like Doom 3 did. Besides, San Andreas is old news and the PS2 version will always have the edge over everyone else becuase of the release date timeframe. Sure, mods are fun and add life to a game but you will never see a Rockstar developed expansion pack for the PC version. Same deal with Vice City when it was release for PC and Xbox, if you don't own a PS2, you're just playing last year's rehash on a different format.

I might give this thread a boost.

I had been waiting ever since the PS2 version came out in 2004 until June 10, 2005 for the PC Version. I don't have a PS2 or a XBOX and I already had GTA III & Vice City on PC. I got it on June 10 (The australian release date. 3 days after US release date) I installed it and it is awesome. It runs great on my P4 1.6, 768 ram, 128mb radeon 9100 & 16x dvd drive, 1280 x 1024 x 32 resolution. Just put Visual effects on low (you can't tell the difference) and about 5 bars of draw distance.

One question though, does any SimTrop Members know how to mod San Andreas?42.gif

As I said before in this topic, I was a bit reluctant on buying GTA SA, since Vice City was a letdown in every possible way (no improvement whatsoever compared to GTA 3... and the 80's feel got old really fast).

However, I decided to get SA for the Xbox last Friday. Let me tell, it's the most fun I've had with a game in a long time. Right now I'm at work and I just can't wait to get home to play it...

Despite the limitations (the huge size of the game world and the PS2 processor), the game is at least decent looking. Weather effects have been improved, like rain, fog and especially the great looking heat wave coming from the tarmac. The buildings are greatly detailed from the outside, and are even better on the inside (and now there are plenty of buildings you can enter).

As for the gameplay, that's where the game is really strong. It feels like you can do anything a real person could do in a real city. Eating, working out, swimming, playing arcade machines, getting new tatoos, hairstyles or clothes, playing basketball... and I just have played the game for 2 days so far.

Oh, I can't forget to mention how great additions the BMX and other bicycles were to the game... better than the motorbikes were to VC.

The biggest improvement to the game on the PC is the Graphical Details and Draw Distances.  Far superior to PS2 and XBox.44.gif

The biggest downside on the PC is trying to drive and fly with the keyboard.  Very Frustrating32.gif

Wait till you see the flying, boating, bike and driving school later in the game. 11.gif Ah well, finished the main storyline of the game, now to do all the side mission and get 100% game completion. 9.gif

I just reached the second city, San Fierro. It's beautiful, and it feels like it's a whole new game... and I wasn't even done knowing Los Santos... there are still places left to visit there. The game also has a well-told story.

I've never been so addicted to a game since Project Gotham Racing 2.

San andreas was rubbish. i had the PS2 version and quite frankly it was just awful. Yes the controls have improved and the graphics are better. also the violence is more realistic, becoming less violent. the idea of a gansta rap GTA just didnt work. it is far more of a mafia game. Vice City was a lot better in storyline and time setting. and still they can't make curves and circles properly, look at the roads. where there should be a smooth curve there is an angular attempt at a circle. even true crime which was rubbish had smooth roads.

Well, who plays GTA for the graphics? If I want to play a good-looking game I go back to Doom3 or Splinter Cell: CT. GTA SA is all about gameplay... it's got basically the same visuals as GTAIII (with a few minor improvements), which were beautiful... 4 years ago.

So... I really couldn't care less about the smoothness of the roads in such a huge, nicely detailed world.

dont bother with zero's missions, theyre not essential to continue the story so i'd just leave em and finish them later.

Easy, toxicpiano... you made your point, but there's no need to get so angry. I just don't happen to agree with you on that matter. I personally found the 80's atmosphere in VC to be very shallow (just some Miami Vice wardrobe and a few songs in the radio) and quite boring after the novelty was gone... ah, those weird years... they're a time to forget.

San Andreas takes place in the early 90's. The music and places are perfect for that era. Rockstar did a good job.

There are plenty of radio stations to set the early 90's mood, and they do the trick. Also, there are some hilarious radio stations (besides the talk show station that is now a trademark for all GTA games)... like the country station. It helps the countryside feel (it's always playing when you steal a car in the small cities or by a farm) and the music is enjoyably pathetic...

I'm not having problems with the default control configuration... the drive-by takes a while to get used to, but it's not that hard once you do.

I have played the game for a few weeks and I must say I can find few flaws in it. The oly big thing I hate with it is all the rap-crap on the radio. I only listen to Dust<-44.gif, Rose<-3.gif and sometimes KJAH and SFUR. oh well I shouldn't complain the game rules anyway 19.gif

Yeah KDST!! Music doesn't get old, it just gets a little...dusty. Great station. I also like Radio X, usually I just listen to it when I get tired of KDST though.
