I've found making mass transit a great way of commute! I have a city where thousands of people are using trains and busses...just one question...

I have had to make so many stations since sims are so lazy walking and won't walk a few blocks...is there any way to make it better, or gimme some tips on where to place stations?

(Stations=Any type of mass transit stop...)

Well you could try NAM with GLR or Road Top Mass Transit on STEX.I place stations about every 8 squares for the lazy peeps.

LAAAAAAZZZZY! I have them driving to a job 5 tiles down the block. The bus and subway stops were taking up so much real estate that now I mostly use the road-top stops/stations just to save space. I've found these to be much more efficient. Be careful in residential areas, though. If placed incorrectly you can get NRZs on a house.

I use a combo of road top and tile mass transit stations as well as the bus/subway combo. I also use a modified 6x6 grid pattern and put a station at about 12 tiles from each other. that way no matter where a sim is there is a station with in a max of 6 tiles in any direction. (it is like the water pipes, they spread water in a 6 tile radius so you put the pipes 12 tiles from each other for optimal coverage).

as for the NRZs, if you use a grid pattern just force the facing of the lots to the north and the south using a combination of Shift, Ctrl, and/or Alt (what ever combination you need to make it work right) and you will have the roads on the east and west clear for road top transit stations.

In reply to the original question:

Yes, you have to have many stops, and this is realistic in real life. I lived in a 2.9 million metroplex (OC, CA) for seventeen years and used only bus eight of those, and now live in a 5.9 million metroplex (Dalls-Ft Worth, TX) and use only bus and GLR for transport. I'm patient and don't mind a six block walk (in fact, to get to a transfer station I'll walk about 10 short city blocks), but most people I have met find even a six walk block a burden.

If you want the type of bus stops to reflect real life, my take would be the following: 1) The default bus stop applies to sheltered stops, usually higher traffic stops in high profile crossroads and predominately pick-up. 2) The on-street stops are mostly for drop-off and/or for relatively lightly travelled routes. 3) Some of the larger bus lots that show up in the STEX would work for multi-bus line transfer stations (usually no more than a six to twelve in a multi-million population metroplex).

shivsood:  if you have a 6x6 block you will have two roads going north and south and two roads going east and west.  when you zone you can change the direction the zone faces by using a combination of SHIFT, CTRL and/or ALT.  each of those keys will do different things when zoning, although ALT is the main key used to change zone facing.  if you face all your zones toward the east and west or the north and south then the other two roads will have no zones facing them and so you can put road top mass transit on those roads and not worry about NRZ (no road zots) appearing on the buildings.

here we have a 6x6 block with zone facing to the north and south.  the roads on the east and west are open for road top mass transit with no ill effects.

i tend to zone blocks of 6x6 and place a bus stop on every street corner. This way you can easilly get 70-90% of your population using buses. Ive found that people are willing to use mass transit as long as they don't have to shift their butts far to the stop.

Any further than about 4-5 tiles without some kind of motorised wheelchair and theres a good chance theyll take the car cause their legs get tired. Placing a stop on every corner of a 6x6 grid ensures sims don't have to walk further than 3 tiles.

I seem to recall that a sim will not walk more than 21 tiles in an entire journey or something (please correct me on this): if you add 3 tiles at the start and end for walking from job/home to stop, that leaves 15 tiles in the middle for interchange between modes of transport. (ie: Home --> Bus --> Rail --> Metro --> Job) for more complex cities.
