Some time ago I was talking to my friend, which mentioned to listen SOAD. 1st time I heard this name, as i don't listen to radio so much. In another day I heard that name again from somebody else. Well, I understood it seems to getting famous now. I totally forgot about it, untill once I was in car listening the radio and changing a station i hear: "such a lonely day....and it's mine" The most loneliest day of my life??? I think even me won't do this kind of mistake, but I think it's just french people, who don't speak english well anyway. I've got smile on my face, as I was pretty sure it's some humour stuff which we sometimes have on radio. I heard the song almost untill the end, my ears were asking me to change, but I just wanted to heard the comments after to know what it was exactly, what comic and why did it. At the end dj said it was SOAD. For a moment I was not able to realize it is real music. 1st of all lyrics of this song was incredibly stupid, voices are just horrible, it seemed like they sing from the metal pipe having someone torturing them in the same time. But after I've got smart idea, that they supposed to be super hot, that's why some girls listen to it. It was the only idea in my brain, cause there can be no any other explanation!!!

In some time watching the music channel I am watching the end of some clip, new one starts, it seems I've never seen that, so I keep watching. And suddenly I see that...it's SOAD again...I am under shock, I'm wondering if I am dreaming or that's true. And why they look so...mmm...scary???!!!

Well, why I created this topic. 1st of all everyday there is a lot of people on this forum coming as site is very popular, so I guess I can have answer to my questions. I don't want to hurt feelings of anyone, we are allowed to have all diferrent tastes and it's normal. But I just want to know from people who possibly like this...WHY??? I don't understand...

The lyrics is bad

Music is medium, probably the only thing not the worst, but stil...

Voices are horrible!!!!

Appearence...probably they should look bit better; since ppl watch it on tv often.

So for what reason people listen SOAD? it's fashion, or what? Now it seems cool to listen SOAD?

SOAD = System of a Down I take it...

Well, people listen to that type of music (and Slipknot) for the same reason my generation listened to the Sex Pistols back in the 70's....because it was cool and trendy to like that type of music (I use the word VERY loosely) and it represents anarchy and rebellion...if there's nothing a teenage boy wants to do more it's rebel [i

Nothing is new these days, it's all been said and done before...the punk movement certainly changed the face and attitudes of music across the world, because before everyone was listening to Manfred Mann and ELO and saying "groovy". Whilst they (SOAD et al) may be talentless idiots (not to mention facist, racist and a lot of other -ists) some record company somewhere believes there is a market for this type of rhythmic torture and they have a "cult" following...However, people grow up and their tastes change and so will these "fans", and when they do, the noise will subside..BUT it will be replaced by another noise. C'est la vie.

What worries me more is the flood of "gangsta" rap where the main topic is drive-by shootings, how much money they make from drug deals etc...and this is popularised....Not once in the history of music was a performer/writer shot and killed for writing songs...until the Gangsta Rappers. This music is listened to by millions who admire and try to emulate their "heroes" (what a silly word for them).

Edited. Mr. C.

    callagrafx, thanks for your answer!

Well, I have nothing against Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy with his Black Sabath. Few yars ago I was also listening this kind of music, but SOAD is another story! It's just nothing comparable! Well, I mentioned the reasons before...

Some of us listen to music for it's worth and quality or content. I suppose that would be you and I, so far  Amandine.

I NEVER listen to a band because it is hip or trendy or cool. That would make me a follower of the masses. A sheep, bleeting blindly, to a beat.

I do however like all music genres, from every corner of the world.

I have seen SOADs videos; fairly intense music, but very standard for that genre(style) of Music

Yeah, I even went to their site, to check Cigaro. Unfortunately I can't listen this genius song, but I'm sure it's same kind of quality. I'll try to find it one day anyway, when I'll want so laugh in my life.4.gif But instead I again heard this beautification "lonely day". When you enter site...since 1st achords, it's just amazing really how people can even put this as start music on their site! Still when I listen to this song, I can't believe it's a real music, not some kind of humour!

Traditionally it appears that each generation often listens to music that had the potential to offend previous generations, which I've always found fascinating.  It's often hard for me to figure out what was so revolutionary about say Elvis Pressley, the Beatles, or Chubby Checker or who knows what startled prior generations.  By the same token there's lots of stuff that's come out in the past 25 years I'm sure I'd probably be highly irritated with if I ever paid attention to it.

May be it's the "frog in the kettle syndrome" where the frog can only be boiled when it is desensitized to a slowly rising temperature.   Fortunately as a parent right now I only have to worry about  Thomas the Tank engine and Dora the Explorer even as I chill out to easier 70's-80's R&B, "(elevator *cough* smooth) jazz", light rock and pop music and news-talk stations.  But I know the day is a comin'...

I can understand, that our generation get influenced somehow to past, future generations will be influenced to us, but influenced with a music! Not this! It's the worst I've heard in my life. I guess they'll make good band: James Blunt, guy from Mattamix whi sings "Big city life" and 2 singers from Soad. I think it will make ears breakdown to all the planet.

Each to their own, I suppose...the main thing is that you do not let any form of music define who you are and what you think, after all, lyrics are other peoples poetry. Too many people use the excuse "the music made me do it" as a reason for criminality..Music is ENTERTAINMENT, pure and simple....from the very first lute players to the Stratocaster jockeys of today..the premise is exactly the same. However, hearing some of the trash that SOAD and Slipknot produce I would not put them in the same category as proper musicians like Foo Fighters. BTW...Anyone remember Spinal Tap? This is what I initially thought these guys (SOAD and Slipknot) were trying to emulate, but poorly. Crank up the Amp to 11.

The biggest artists in the world are the ones who have been around for decades (Madonna, U2, Elton John etc) and those that are no longer with us (Elvis, John Lennon). This is because their POETRY is timeless, like Shakespeare.

Well... SliPKnoT does not produce Trash, and I'm really happy that you didn't put SliPKnoT in the same category as Foo Fighters... Thank God! 22.gif I'm also happy you don't like SliPKnoT, that's a good sign!

Not surprisingly, you completely misconstrued the point. Slipknot are minor league players on a musical world stage, no, actually they are under the world stage in the cellars...Foo Fighters are global superstars, because their music a) crosses boundaries and generations and (this is an important point) b) you don't need a lobotomy to understand their music.

To some (nay, a good proportion of) people, Slipknot DO produce trash, but to you and their other 5 fans, they don't....that's what's known as musical taste, good or bad. I don't like sLIpkNOt because they are not to my taste (my brain filters out the cacophony of mis-played instruments and shouting of lyrics) and because I retain a modicum of intelligence. What makes them, in your eyes, worth listening to? What do you feel when you listen to their recordings (I really can't call it music)?

BTW...You have won the SimTropolis award for most use of the "Sly" emoticon....congratulations

Guys, let's see if we can discuss music without insulting each other.  Talk about the music, not about each other.

    Well, I can answer that.

Elvis Pressley moved his hips.  It sounds silly now but, on his early TV appearances, they would only show him from the ribs up because it was too shocking to show gyrating hips.

The Beatles were originally considered to be "dang burn hippies" because their hair was long.    Again, sounds silly now but their hair was considered to be shockinly inappropriate for men.

As for Chubby Checker,he showed people, even those with no talent, how to dance.  and it was nothing like a Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movie.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I have to say, and I hope you don't mind me saying this, but IMHO, Slipknot is horrible. Plainly horrible. I mean, they have great talent. I'm a drummer and I'm amazed by Joey Jordison's skill at drumming that fast, but still... the music only appeals to people that are extremely extremely hardcore.

I think my dad probably considered Frank Sinatra to be a hippy!  He probably would have wanted Perry Como to have him cut his hair!17.gif

When I got out of the U.S. Air Force in the '80's I was so eager to grow my hair back again only to discover that short hair was back in style. 18.gif

Why can't you kids listen to civilized music like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC & The Who!!!  17.gif

~if you can't express your dislike for a band more politely, don't express it at all~ A.C.

Thats why i like Iron Maiden.

Of course, ive started listening to japanese rock, and they still play pretty good, and im starting to like it even though i have no idea what they are singing about, which may or may not be such a bad thing.

As for gangsta rap, that is an exception to the rule when i comes to only being considered obscene due to the generation gap issue. While some music may be obscene, a lot of rap is clearly incitement, which is something that is universal for all generations.

Elvis The Pelvis  when he came out was the ultimate rebel, leather jacket and Tshirts,  girls throw ing thier underthings on the stage ect..

Now hes a gospel music Icon even though he was  a know drug user ect.... You just dont mention those things to his fans.

Every genertaion considers the music of thier kids to be inspired by the devil.

You tend to  like the popular Music of the time, My Parents couldnt  stand i listened to a

    band called Styx.

Who when THEY started out were considered devil worshipers the same as the boys from Zepplin,The Eagles and Pink Floyd, when in reality  the were realy just basic blues/rock  bands.... and drug addicts ect..... but then again arnt most celebritys weather thier Musicians actors, athelets ect?

I still  listen To Iron Maiden though, I do find their songs powerfull, and for the most part like U2 political in nature.

Iron Maiden can be political, but except for run to the hills its not as obvious.

BTW, my favorite IM song is Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Its also a pretty cool poem too.

Prime example of the irony of time: The NFL hires the Rolling Stones to do the Superbowl halftime show in order to ensure that the music will be clean and appropriate.5.gif

In their day, the Stones were a very controversial band.

Imagine 30 years from now having Eminem do the halftime show in order to ensure that it's clean and appropriate. Then you'll see how the situation must seem to some older people.21.gif

I very much doubt if he would, and doesn't anyone find that slightly troubling? If Eminem's music now is soo controversial and full of words like MF, how BAD will it get in the future..and why is controversial necessarily good? When did music cease to be entertainment and become a weapon?

As an aside, the naming of followers of bands is very apt...Fans is shortened from "Fanatics" and the dictionary definition is A person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause. This word is derived from the Latin fanaticus, inspired by orgiastic rites, pertaining to a temple, from fanum, meaning temple.

BTW...as ST is a Fan Site, my Masthead was quite accurate LOL.

Oh, and Sloppet, just because I listen to music I can hear without permanent damage does not make me a sheep, or any other form of farmyard animal. I am perfectly entitled, as are you, to express an opinion and for that opinion to be respected (not necessarily agreed with)....I suggest you re-read the forum rules.

I liked them and many other hard rock pre-metal groups from the 60's-80's as a yute.  One of the big things I've gradually discovered, whether it is here or elsewhere in RL, is that people can feel as highly charged about music and hair styles as they can about race, religion, politics, and their countries of origin.  I've learned to tread lightly when it comes to discussing culture.

Having writtten that though, I will have to admit that as a 40 something adult that there remains many groups from that era that I am embarrassed by today once I've had a chance to read their lyrics.  There were lots of obscenity, immorality, sexism, and racism that I didn't notice then b/c they were popular and b/c I couldn't really hear what they saying over their instruments.

I've also gently challenged my dad to pay attention to what some of the artists of his generation were saying.  I'll grant that subtly and tact is probably the biggest loss over the generations but I also suspect that what he likes are also a matter or personal and taste as opposed to simply what he, or others, truly think is right.
