Hey guys, I am in a little need of some help and was wondering if you could help a feller' out. Ok, so... I have $1,000 to work with, although any money saved would be greatly appreciated by my parents. I was just going to list the parts to make sure I have everything that I may need.     They are:

1. Barebone kit: 450 watt PSU / Asu A8V-E SE Mobo (PCI-e) / AMD Athlon X2 4200+ / BlackCase, with cpu fan + 2 BB case fans + Arctic Alumina <--(honestly idk what that is) / floppy drive

$519.04

2.Evga GeForce 6900xt 256mb  PCI-e Graphics card.

$143.50 ($113.50 after rebate)

3. Maxtor MX6L300S0 300GB harddrive. 7200 rpm, SATA. 16MB buffer.

$103.00

4. 2GB DualChannel DDR 400mhz (2, 1 GB sticks)

$145.00

5. Asus 16x DVD+R Burner

$36.99

So my computer (b4 S&H) comes to :  $947.53

So what do you think?

Looks pretty good to me... I don't have any other recommendations... only that I'm assuming that you have a keyboard, mouse, monitor and speakers already, as you didn't list those.

Don't diss the black cases! I have an Antec Sonata in piano black, which is as shiny as a new BMW, and I was just as mad as the average BMW owner when I found a scratch on it.

You've got a nice setup going and are lucky you can spend that much on a machine. Enjoy your 2GB RAM.

Arctic Alumina is a brand of thermal paste you use between heatsinks and processors/chipsets/memory.

If you're going to go dual-core, I would look into the Opteron line. The Denmark core is essentially the same as the Toledo core in the X2s, which is a step up from your Manchester core. I haven't read near as much as I would like to on Opteron vs X2, but from what I have read, the Opterons are slightly better than their X2 counterparts. Unless you can find an Opteron barebones, however, you'd have to buy your case, fans, motherboard, and floppy drive seperately.

I seriously would not recommend Opterons. They were designed as workstation chips, and as such do not run games well (with the exception of Quake 4, which will even run on a computerized refrigerator)

From what I've read, the Opterons are made in fabs with higher Quality Control, run cooler (or overclock farther), and have three HyperTransport links, while the X2s only have one.

    Looks good so far.

I would like for you to give us a little more info on your 2x1GB sticks via DDR400 RAM:

    1. Who is it made by?
    2. What is the case-latency on them?
Also on the EVGA 6900xt Video Card:

    1. How many pipelines does it have?
    2. What is the Core Clock speed?
    3. What is the Memory Clock speed?
I might be able to find some better ones at the same cost if I had the above info.

where are you getting it from, is it new egg, tigerdirect, a computer show, or some other place, newegg has cheaper prices than td but td has better service, my first custom computer came from tigerdirect, real good service, we returend the mobo though only because we found a better one on td, but my bro ordered from newegg and the powersupply was all dented, and stuff slipped out of the motherboard box.
