What Music Do you listen to while playing SC4?
Jasoncw replied to hdorriker's topic in General Off-Topic
I listen to music with winamp (and sc4s music turned off, I don't even remember what it sounds like!). I have Weezer, Pixies, The Pillows, The Beatles, (old) Radiohead, Oasis, and then some other songs. Between those bands, I have alot of material to choose from. But I ussualy play Weezer which never gets old. My avatar and signature and stuff don't realy reveal too much about me I guess. -

I think alot of people love those cool old buildings (that's what they call them ) but architects don't build them, and companies don't move into abandoned ones. I also think there is more talent in older buildings. stone carvers, painters, and other artists would be hired to work on some part of the building to make it beautiful and meaningful (there were ussualy symbols and motifs and stuff). Engineers worked to support the stone decorations and height with technology that was new at the time. To me in some cases, architects build towers out of the inexpensive metal and glass and it gets called modern instead of cutting corners. Of course just becuase it's made out of certain materials doesn't make it good or bad, and buildings don't need to be expenisve to look good, but I think I'm going off topic. -

Date: 10/21/2005 6:50:31 PM Author: GAT-X105 huge race riots scared everyone out of town.quote> being from Detroit and always hearing about how the race riots scared everyone out of town (which isn't exactly true) I'm always skeptical of this. racism might have messed things up, but the actual riot itself probably didn't hurt the city too bad. It would be nice if manufacturing came back to the US, since I think we'd be alot stronger (economicly) if we did. Our environment and natural resources are doing a bit better because of it, but I think it's possible to have relativly clean manufacturing. Someone commented in another thread about how a service based economy doesn't work well, and I think it's very true. -

I'd like to visit most places, but there are many places I would like to visit first, considering my resources and all, so I didn't vote. Also, I don't know very much about Newark; it was only a name untill this thread. Maybe someone could describe it more with some pictures? I did a google image search and didn't find much. -

I think futuristic space-age-y architecture should be stayed away from, mostly becuase they don't age well. Look at some of the buildings from the 60's and 70's that where supposed to be space-age-y, now they're not all that great. With some of these buildings, the shine will fade, possibly get rust on it, and it will look like a old tin can. Plus, these types of buildings ussualy don't look as good in real life as they do on the computer I think architects should be working to evolve and expand on traditional architecture instead of trying to make something completely different. To me some of these buildings are not that unique or creative anyways. Most of them use cliches, stereotypes, and that kind of stuff, but then claim to be groundbreaking and unique and that kind of stuff. I also don't see where some of the talent is. If you ask some random guy off the street to draw the most unique, super-modern building he possibly can, he'd draw something very similair to most of what we see. These designs don't seem to take much time either. The one building was based off a sculpture the artchitect made, and based off the design would take very little time and effort to plan. the origonal sculpture probably took more time to do, and even that probably didn't take much time either. I don't mind the most recently posted building, except that it does look like a spaceship, or maybe some kind of robotic insect, and that makes me unable to think of it normaly. But I like it's curves and textures. I think it would loose the insect/space ship image if it was tilted vertcily, but right now I think it would work well as a monorail station with some modification. I have a few ideas for a building that would make it beautiful, unique, modern, but still comfortably traditional. I'd BAT it, but since most of the details would be too small (since it would be built on a human level, not a sim city level), and many of the details are for the interior of the building, I think they'd get lost. When I get access to nice 3-d software and I get some skills I'll definitly make it and show screenshots of it, but that probably won't be for a while. -

Is there a problem with the base and overlay textures making wierd horizontal bars over the rail? I was having problems with that, sometimes they show up and sometimes they don't. The problem comes from the game thinking that the LOD is lower than the ground. The LOD is actually above the ground, but the game must get confused with small differences. There isn't anything I can really do, as I've tried raising the LOD more, but then the train looks weird when it passes through the station. Sorry for all the BAT jargon but that's what happened. Right now the train station is getting alot of ratings per download, and a nice amount of downloads. Hopefully everyone who downloaded it likes and uses it once they get it into the game.

mteach2000: You didn't read the thread, did you? lol, the medium train station (1x4) is being worked on, and is mostly done. The large train station (2x4) hasn't been started yet. For that I'll need to redo the roof, and alot of the red metal stuff (to span across 2 tiles instead of one). Since it is more grand, I might add more decoration to it.

A small train station made to fit in small areas, or areas where you do not want to demolish the area for a larger station. Placing rail stations can increase rail usage, increase pedestrian traffic, and lower road congestion. Pedestrian traffic increases customers for commercial lots, and lower road congestions reduces air pollution which decreases local desirablitity. Rail tracks and and train stations take up alot of space in your city; this lot will enable you to place stations in places previously not possible. This train station contains elements from the Beaux Arts and Art Deco architecture styles. BAT by: Jasoncw Modding by: Twrecks Click here for discussion of new and current projects -
Starchitect Discussion Thread

I like this building, but it isn't as radical as the others posted. It looks like the brown building and the blue building are the same building. I might like each one better if they were seperated. It reminds me of that building in Hong Kong (bank of china tower, I think it got renamed though), but I like this one better. I think it's interesting that some of these buildings are seen as creative, yet literaly anyone could design them. The designs look like the creations of people who are new with 3-d programs. hmmm, create cube, another cube, another cube, create sphere. I wan't to experiment with some modifiers... Then that file gets sent over to get built in real life and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it, and something by these other architects. But I do think that in reality, most common people dislike this sort of architecture. That building in centeral park really is fantastic. It is very practical and functional: big windows, balconies, cubic rooms (how are you supposed to put furniture against a wavy wall?) it blends in with it's surroundings, and looks new. You could mistake it for an old building at a quick glance or a new one at a quick glance. I think it could use big windows on the ground floor, and maybe a resturaunt and a cafe on the ground level. http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/3594/bannana2pr.jpg align=baseline border=2> I propose Banana Tower. Its fruity elegance and its bold yellow statement make it a residential tower unlike any New York has ever seen. But the real thing isn't too bad. I really like the idea of having those open terraces (although I'd never go near the ledge). But the overall design is too much. Plus, although I'm sure it's structuraly safe, it looks flimsy. I like the idea of moving architecture foward while improving functionality, but I don't think this building is neccecarly the answer. -
wow, alot of feedback! praiodan: My last name is Wagner too sharkbait16: There is a picture of the entire building at the end of my old thread (there is a link to it at the top of this thread). I'll post a full body shot next time I show progress on it though. lol, I was waiting for someone to notice the lack of stairs to the roof and deck. Lord_Bertrum: I agree, the 2x2 will definitly be there, and the plop will be the 2x2 version. There will still be a 2x3 version which is of course optional. Hordijk: I adore the classic style I think it's sad that alot of people in real life want these kinds of buildings torn down. Me personaly, I'd like for architects to continue using the older styles (while still building modern styles). jacqulina, ramvid01: Thanks Nothing has happened to the Wagner Hotel since the last update, except I've been plopping it (a quicky landmark) in my cities some more, and it still looks good. Twrecks has been modding my BATs, so if he posts something here make sure to read it! I've gotten the finished small train station from Twrecks, and it works very well. It'll probably get uploaded to the STEX tomorrow (it is night time where I live right now).

yea, the Fisher Building really is fantastic. I saw a play there once, and the interior is also amazing. I also spent some time in one of the offices, and that particular floor hadn't been remodeled, although I'm sure that other floors are very modern. I wish that new center (the 2nd downtown) had been built downtown instead, along with the abandoned train station. New center never shows up in the skyline shots, yet the Fisher is 30 stories tall. Hong Kong really is amazing, it's hard to believe that such a place exists today.

Adventures In New Urbanism --- A Journal
Jasoncw replied to louisville327's topic in SC4 City Journals
This is a really awesome city journal, I'm glad you started it back up (I don't visit cj's very often so I'm a little late finding the updates in this one). Detroit's baseball stadium is located well. I never thought about the possibility of it being like those other stadiums you posted, but now I appreciate that it isn't. The stadium is located nearby a large park, two historic theaters (that now host concerts), and a few bars. It's also next to a highway for easy access. Keep up the good work -
http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/7816/wagnerhotelpreview0wj.jpg align=baseline border=3> I rendered the Wagner Hotel, and I tossed it on a quick lot so I could plop it around town to see how it looks. It blends in really well with the maxis buildings. Including some of the medium density R$$$ which grow way too often in my cities. I think a R$$$ version of this (it was intended to be CS$$$) would be cool, but on the other hand it would make the lots and modding a pain, and would take alot longer to finish and get on the STEX. Plus it would grow alot more frequently if it filled both CS$$$ and R$$$ demand in rich cities.

My favorite skyline is Detroits. I think in New York and Chicago, there is so much that none of it becomes special, except for the really tall buildings (sears, wtc, etc.). In Detroit, the skyline is spacey enough that you can see all of the buildings. My avatar is the very top of the Penobscot building. http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=281543 for a nice picture of the Penobscot. (I edited out the antena on my avatar) I think that Hong Kong looks really nice, but if I actually had to live there, it would be way too much for me. L.A. from Bladerunner is really cool too, but I'd never want to have that place exist in reality. as a side note, when I think of those new modern skyscrapers, I think of the modern corperations that built them, and I think the big companies of the past where slightly better. Also, imo, the buildings of today are made to be cheap, efficient, and to make a proffit. More money was spent on the older buildings, and the money was spent on something beyond the building itself. Plus I like art-deco

The diagonal building looks outstanding! If you want any help with the texturing I can help.

I've started the front entrance, and it isn't looking bad. I also modified the roof texture. Those squares are now half as big. I also added some weathering to it too. The small train station is coming along. I'm guessing it'll be on the STEX in less than two weeks. Hordijk: Now that I've changed them into grey and white, they look really plain, so I think I'm going to make them a realy simple texture or something to make them look better. Kwakelaar: I guess the roof deck is pretty tacky for this building, but not only is it more realistic, but I've also been having problems filling the roof with roof junk. Edit: Cool, page 2!

I think that we're having hard enough of a time getting the currently built buildings BATed As far as I know it's impossible to make new functional bridges, but eyecandy lots are possible. It's also possible to make the kind of bridge that only has those undertrusses, and then make another lot that hands ontop of it that has the custom bridge part. Underworld did that in his City Journal/BAT. You'll have to manual find his threads though, since I think there's number(s) at the end of his name. I've done a little work on the Free Press Building, you can see it in my BAT thread (there should be a link in my signature).

My origonal plan was to have a copper roof but I couldn't get it to look good so I changed it. The black roof texture that's on it now is actualy my copper roof texture that's just been made black instead of green. I'm working on the roof deck (during World War II there was a roof deck for all of the new women emplyees). It's been surprisingly hard to find a wooden deck texture! I thought that would be a commonly made texture but I guess not. I made a nice roof texture for the building though, it's the black asphault kind, but I bet the real building has a grey roof. Edit: A picture! I think I'm going to have to end up making the chairs white or grey or something. There's so much color on the deck that I think it draws attention away from the rest of the building, and I can't change the rest of the building becuase it's from real life.

The 1x2 version has been rendered, and has it's lot made and everything. Right now it's going to be tested and tweaked and stuff. There is one problem that might require a re-render, but the render took alot less time than I thought it would anyways, so that might not be too bad.

Exit 69 - Beaver Rd Exit Generic Sign

I was going to suggest searching the stex for BSP since I thought that all the BSP buildings where supposed to have that tag on them, but I guess I was wrong. -
Oreo's taste good with: whipped creme, milk, and pudding. Crushed oreo's added to other deserts ussualy taste good too. They do sorta taste like dirt, but they taste like chocolate dirt, imo. Who wouldn't like crunchy chocolately dirt? I don't drink (or do any other unhealthy drugs), smoke, or swear. Some people are completely floored by those things, which always surprises me, while some people aren't shocked at the thought of someone not doing those things. I never use the handles in public bathrooms, I always either push the door open with my foot, or I push with my hand somewhere else on the door. I had never eaten at a Wendys, or an Arbys (american fast food resturaunts) untill a few months ago. I can't ride a bike (although I'm not too sure, I think I could do it if I tried now), or rollerblades, or a skateboard (which is unusual, but how horrible I am at it is unusual). I have a speech impediment, although pretty soon I'm going to look into some kind of a speech therapist type thing. My university probably has someone with some kind of knowledge there (probably in the form of someone who helps foreign students pronounce english or something). My S' and Rs can be Sh's and Rw's but I'm not sure how consistant my errors are. Ironicly I'm horrible at understanding people with speech problems or difficult accents. So I'm not quite as strange as some people here, but to 'outsiders', the fact that any of us posts at a sim city website is bizzare.
