  1. City of EDMONTON

I'm making Edmonton to an exact scale over the next few years. First by hand terraforming every square ft. of the city. The river valley will be as deep and wide as the real thing. The region will run from (winterburn rd. in the west to Highway 14 in the east, and around 190th in the north to baseline rd 0ave in the south). For anyone who knows the city they should be able to realy apprieciate the work put into the region and later the building of nearly every building in such a large city. And for those who dont know Edmonton its a great region to build in which includes a 45km river valley that is miles wide and lined with parks. Please enjoy the progress and leave what you think!

  3. tips on true scale cities.

How to make a real city to scale There are a few steps you must take if you are serious about making a real city to scale properly. 1. First of all your map has to be to scale and acurate. (If the scale of the map is to big or small your city blocks will be way out of wack) - Open up the game and place a road or two in your own neighborhood (an area you know well). - Build a few blocks to the scale of the region you have chosen. - Another trick is to extend artery roads to some land marks. (A river bend, beach, mountain side) - Reference what you have done and see if the scale looks proper. - You don't need a block that is 18x9 for housing. They just won't fit. And you don't want them to small. Commercial areas require space and detail. 2. After that you should buy a map (A real paper map of the area you plan on doing. No internet maps) - Map out over your paper map all of the city borders your region will have. Small Medium and Large city borders. - Take your time doing this and even be prepared to alter your bitmap to suit borders of your city to your needs. (You don't need a border between two cities in your region to go right threw what would be your commercial district). * A small map on Sim City 4 is 1km x 1km. I found on my version of Edmonton I ended up placing 1.1km x 1.1km in a small map. Be prepared to alter your scale to the map you have chosen. Just make sure it fits will. (Build a practice area as statred earlier). 3. Once you have completed the first two steps you should develope your scale on paper for quick reference. - You should use KILOMETERS. Imperial will become messy when referencing your scale. - Develope your scale like so (a "Lot" being one square in game). Cm's Lots .0 0.0 .1 1.4 .2 2.8 .3 4.2 ------------------ 1cm 14 1.25 17.4 1.5 20.9 ------------------ 5cm 69.6 16cm 222.6 18.4 256 - 18.4cm for example would be 256 lots (a large map). - 1.5cm would be 20.9 Lots. Simply round up or down / so 21 lots. - Once you have this quick reference sheet things speed up and you can begin. 4. Starting - Where to start, ones greatest question. - Some good areas are - You neighborhood - Main Road Downtown - Main Bridge - Highway / Main road - Near a landmark, beach, river bend, mountain. - I would advise a combination of all of them. You'll be surprised but the answer will jump out and you will see many good places. 5. Once major roads are layed out reference your map, measure from the borders on that map you have drawn out in Cm. Lets say your main road is 7.5cm from the left border of you map you now know it is 104.3 tiles from the border. Now you can lay out the road. - Always remember Roads Avenues and so on are 1 or 2 tile wide themselves. It is good to measure from bothe the right and left or top and bottom of the map to figure out exactly where it lays. - This will also help you from making large mistakes - In my region I made an entire neighborhood once or twoce to find out the roads where off by as much as 15 tile... Then you get to do it all over. So take your time. I hope this helps. PS. If you go to my City Journal - CityOfEdmonton you will find many of these tips and more.

  5. System Requirements?

Personally I hope they make it very demanding as thats how it looks. Sort of like Flight Simulator X. You can still play that game if you have a regular computer. But if you have a computer like mine you can max most options. Why limit a game. Just make the graphic options available for all PCs.
  6. Bout time the simcity fans strike back!!

This game is a sham. What a waste of $50 and the game takes up to much room in my house for what it is worth. I can not wait until Cities XL comes along. I am one of the most loyal and proud fans of Sim City but Societies has abolished any further inclination of that.
  7. Creationism vs. Evolution

I can not wait until such a debate is null. When one day societies and people can finally outgrow the fantasy of religion. May be it what you yourself think it is. Problem is I won't live long enough to see such a day. And to think some people have the odasity to say the world isn't flat yet still believe in burning bushes telling them what to do or the temptations a talking snake can impose. I'll never understand how anyone can be so narrowminded.

Here is the new Edmonton Art Gallery stupid looking buildings.....
  9. Sights Across Canada

I don't look at many or any City Journals anymore but I have to say I make a point of checking this one out from time to time. It has a very western Canadian feel to it. I can relate to alot of the work you have done.

  12. UFO SIGHTING!!! (Aug 2nd, 08)

Well its the Moon, you can even see its natural reflection in the water. And some air traffic below it. You can even see the planes strobe lights in the usual pattern. This is such a bad post...
  13. What Do You Think About Cities XL?

I think ths is what we have waited for. Hopefully it is the same as SimCity but with the obvious upgrade in graphics. I am still hoping for power plants and a budget... everything that makes creating a working city a challenge. From what I have seen it is extremely realistic looking. In my opinion this is SimCity 6. It has skipped a generation and is as good as a city building game can "look" at this time. Lets hope the game play follows threw.
  14. Revelstoke

Very realistic CJ. Nice artwork on some of the pics. Going by some of your names you must live in Southern alberta or BC ;o)

  16. Which Canadian City do you think is the best??

    1. Vancouver - It's a major world city, has alot of culture, the ocean and mountains. B.C. is the nicest part of Canada by far. Downfalls Hastings and Traffic. 2. Edmonton - for a city of 1 million it host all events any larger city would. Great in summer with lots to do and the River Valley is one of a kind. Rockies are only 3 hours away. Downfalls are the rapidly rising cost of living. 3. Victoria - Like Vancouver the natural beauty of the area is some of the best on earth. It has a life and culture all of its own. Best place in Canada for less then a half million. 4. Calgary - Just a note - Being from Edmonton I am born to hate Calgary. But it is a good city. Very simular to Edmonton and if one resident claims an advantage over the other they can quickly come back with one of its own jems. 5. Kelowna (Okanogan) - Another great smaller city. The best weather in Canada and tons to do in the summer. Lots of lakes and beaches with weather usualy in the 30's C. Anyone familuar with the Okanogan will know Vernon. I like Vernon alot more then Kelowna because its not so busy.
  17. Revolving Skyscrapers

That is ugly... I'm kind of sad to see the route some people take buildings. Just becuase you can make it look odd doesnt mean you have too. But then again I like 1930's style buildings so....
  18. This is getting extremely annoying...

I also bought a new PC. And, that game also crashes randomly. I have installed all proper updates. And also use no plugins at times. I do not think NAM is it. I searched for a solution and didn't get much. But I did find one thing. It said to Defrag your PC and the game will run better due to the way the game stores save files. I did this and for a few weeks I had no random crashes. I know it isn't my plugins. I have a super PC so that isn't the issue. And I also updated it properly.... so... perhaps defraging your pc more often is it? I got a couple crashes again in the last few days. I'll try a defrag again and see if a pattern imerges.
  19. Lankota, Alberta, Canada

This is realism to a new level. This town reminds me of a real town in Alberta. Camrose. Only thing is most small towns in Alberta have the big stores, big name shopping places along the main road threw now a days.... Downtowns are dead and tired looking in some of them. Others keep them up as a social area.
  20. The Simtropolis City Journal Hall of Fame

Thank you for adding my City Journal to the Hall of Fame. Being added to the original 12 City journals has some added honour to it. At times I wish I had it in me to keep it going... life is just to busy for such a large project. There are many great Cj's out there today. I feel old and dated now ;o)
  21. Heath Ledger Found Dead in Manhattan Apartment

Sad to see this happen, happy to say this : Don't do drugs. I know nothing is official. But things are pointing in this direction.
  22. England! That Green Pleasant Land!

It's not often I am impressed. I am impressed.
  23. I have a few points to make on this topic. First, I don't agree or disagree wth this, but I do understand it as a realist. - For Example there are nearly 200,000 Minke whales on earth. They are no where near extinction. Taking roughly half of one percent will not impact the population. - Many countries kill many types of animals in massive numbers for different reasons. At the end of the day it is usually for the consumer despite what ever reason they want to justify the killings for. - The thing that gets me is the public usualy only cares when animals are killed if they are appealing to the eye. Cute Pandas, seals, whales.... and so on. LOL, if its a stuffed animal your kid would own people are usually apposed to its killing. This being said there are many animals on earth facing extinction that no body cares about, frogs, lizards, insects and so on. - Recently in world news there have been protest over the killing of seals in the Canadian arctic. Fuzzy little white seals that get clubed over the head for there furs. I can't critisize this and many other shouldn't. The species is growing at a very healthy pace so there is no worry about there numbers. People just don't want to come to terms with a baby seal being clubbed to death. The funny thing is these same people don't mind eating cows that are bled to death or eating chicken or turkeys that are hung upside down on a line that moves along until there heads are pulled off by an automated machine. This being said I am not a big fan of people complaining over such topics.
  24. Is this it? Why is this fun?

I hope someone from Tilted Mills see this thread. From the start it was obvious no one there cared about what Sim City was about. I struggle to keep myself interested. As of now I'm trying to get all the buildings and fill a tile. Once I achive this which should be no challenge I think I'll be completely bored with this game. Should take a total of 4 days from purchase. I have never played a Tilted Mills game before. I never will again. They got my sales due to be a loyal fan of a great series. I and many once "loyal" fans feel let down. This game shoudl be in the discount bin by Christmas. $9.99 I just hope someone can make a few more textures for land and or buildings. Please get modding to salvage this dissapointment.
  25. City of EDMONTON

City of Edmonton I wanted to check in to see how my City Journal is doing. As always, sorry for not updating it. I haven'y played much SimCity in the last year. And the little I have played... are a few different regions. I'll never say this City Journal is retired or even dead. I have every tool, arial photo, and everything else related to it ready to go when ever that urge hits. The good news is I've been playing SimCity since the day the first one came out. And it's a game I always will play. So as I've said before this CJ will continue. There have been times before that this CJ rested for months at a time only to come back. A project of this size requires alot of time. It's not something that is enjoyable to pick for a half hour here and a half hour there. It's nice to sit down for a few hours and get something accomplished. I have a family, full time job, and alot of other past times, so to commit for an evening or two is hard to do. Simtropolis will continue to be a strong community and this thread will be around for some time. I'm thankful for everyones views and interest over the years. I can see Sim City 4 continuing to be the true Sim City fans game of choice for many years to come. Societies personaly for me is an extreme let down to a legendary franchise. My personal opinion is they don't care for the opinions of those who have been fans of the franchise for many years. I'm not saying Societies is the anti-christ to Sim City. I just don't believe it should be using the name Sim City along with it's label. Thanks again ;o)
