What was your favorite non-SimCity Maxis Sim game? (Besides The Sims)
simcityerr posted a topic in Strategy Games
I'd say with me, perhaps Simlife, which was basically a lot like Simearth, except more complicated. Simant and Simtower would come next, and I still haven't made a 100 story tower, but got close. I guess they pretty much gave up on other Sim games after simcopter. I know most of these didn't do too well. I wish they made more though. What would you think about a game called SimBody, where you control a human body, say. I've toyed with the idea, but I don't know what the variables would be, what you'd control and try to balance, most of your systems are autonomous, and it would easy for you to make your sim (unlike real life) resist vices in life, like fast food, tobacco and drugs, and make him/her exercise, etc. -
What virtual CD/DVD programs work with simcity 4?
simcityerr posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
I'd like to play the game without having to insert the physical CD. Right now I'm using a program called Gizmo. I mount the virtual disc in virtual drive K, and the screen comes up I hit play and absolutely nothing happens, it doesn't start. -

Simlife is a lot like simearth, except more complicated, has a steeper learning curve than Simcity 4. -
It would be nice if there was also a heavy capacity water treatment plant, like the high capacity water pump, because it my city of 167K sims, looks like I'm gonna need like 7 or 8 of them to keep my water totally clean. It would be nice if you could have your water treated in another city as well. And, maybe if you could have an airport in another city that sims would use, instead of having to have one in every one that has a good number of commercial zones.

At least for now, we'll be able to modify the weather at least soon. Unless you're talking about natural physical laws, no we can't change those.
-
Hmm, only machine code, like in what- the 20's when they use vacuum tubes? Some reasons higher level languages were created were making it easier/simpler, and the fact that just one little mistake of typing a 0 or 1 will change the whole program.

That's because the copyright expires. The copyright will eventually expire on SC4, but the license agreement does not. So unless EA changes the license agreement, it will never be legal to disassemble the source code. The license agreement actually covers everything the copyright does and more, so expiration of the copyright will have no practical effect. And that also is true! Our only hope is that EA and Maxis go boom and disappear in a big cloud of smoke. The game will then be considered abandonware :kitty: I think abandonware is still technically illegal to download and use. Also, usually when a company goes out of business their assets and rights are bought by another company.

I really want that game also, it looks so interesting, I have been wanting to get it off E-bay or something for a while. Hmm, not sure it will play on any windows version, it was designed for DOS. -
Is there any way to set a region back to default, what it was right after the game was installed. I modified timbuktu, and have cities in it now, is there any way to get it back to what it was in the beginning? I want to have multiple copies of this region, same exact starting terrain, but I suppose I'll need to rename them, Timbuktu, Timbuktu2, Timbuktu3, etc. Is there a way to copy/clone a region?

that is a dead link as well. No, it's not. I have checked the link when I posted it, and the download is perfectly okay. You read the big fat message that said "Sign in to download", right? On this page? https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=15455.0 I don't see such a message. Edit- my mistake. I didn't know there was a delay before it loads the page, the "Can not find page" while the countdown is in the top right corner, is quit deceptive. -

If you just follow the links, you will end up here. that is a dead link as well. -
I wonder, after a long time books become public domain, does the same ever happen with software, so eventually it will be legal to disassemble the source code?

I have a medium-tile sized city called Flatville that has no industry and a medium-tile sized city next called Mechana to it that is ALL industry (that is- of the land I've developed there sofar) How far away- with each transportation method (all of them) will people travel to work? I know commute time is a factor, and monorail is the fastest, but I'd like to make this city all industry. I have two highways that run east-west from Flatville into Mechana but (maybe this answers my question, at least somewhat) some of land that is zoned as industry is undeveloped in Mechana, despite their being a high industry demand in Flatville. It's kind of strange also, if I click the commute query tool on some of the developed industry farthest away from Flatville, it will tell me that the freight trips only, not show me where the workers are commuting from, whereas further toward flatville, it DOES show me where the commuters are coming from. This doesn't make sense, if the industry is developed, it needs workers, and they have to come somewhere. Is it possible for workers to come from FAR away, say from Residential zones two medium sized tiles west of tile they are travelling to from work?

Would any of you like to see any remakes of any of the other simgames, like a Simearth 2, or a Simlife 2? I'm be all for a simearth remake. -

Since my recreation of Chicago is as faithful as I can make it, I just try to build whatever is in the real city. I meant in general, for the game. In this case, I mean, I guess getting lower EQ sims jobs without dirty industry. -

What's your alternative/alternatives to dirty industry then? -
Why isn't it? What's the difference between that and decompiling, exactly? Assembler code? You mean assembly code? The assembly programming language?
-
I'll have to take a look at some of these, are there any that bring back things from past games into SC4, like arcologies, the other power plants, the nuclear fusion power plant (the hydrogen power plant is not the same thing) microwave plant, hydroelectric plant. A geothermal, matter-anti matter annihilation power plant, and quantum zero-point energy power plants would be cool as well. Or, something which lets you make a solar plant as large as you want- as many solar panels as you'd like

Well, how were various mods like NAM, and STEX made? Wouldn't the people who made them, need at least some of SC4's source code to do it? Either that, or they decompiled the game, perhaps, and were able to do it somehow that way. As I understand it, decompiling doesn't (if it ever does) always get you the source code. Could there be a mod which could give you these things? For some reason this thread I made doesn't appear under my "My Content" link.

So, highways don't really count- in my case. Or, I need more than just those highways. Don't you need dirty industry? Well, it seems like in this game, you can't get rid of/alter something, without it effecting something else. I'm guessing dirty industry has some advantage, but the disadvantage is it pollutes. But, maybe (just guessing) it provides more jobs to less educated sims, or something. -

Yeah, just wish I could know why exactly those industrial zones will not fill up (there are some lots left undeveloped) Mechana has nothing but industrial zones, and some water pumps, power and garbage cleanup (incinerator and landfill) it exists to supply Flatburg with jobs I don't think it's pollution, the whole city is smog filled, like you'd expect with an all industrial city. Demand in Flatburg is pretty wild, all of them go up and down rapidly, between positive and negative, but I'm running it on the fastest speed, so it's happened over the course of months really. Have any of you had a situation like mine, with my cities, where the industrial zones did fill up, despite being as far from residential as they are in my region? Also, the city to the south called itus, is also having trouble getting industrial zones filled, for some reason. I'm guessing you also try to do what I do, not to have any industry in a city with residential, at least not non-high tech, non-polluting industry. -

NAM hasn't made a real different sofar. Maybe did you mean the Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool? That allows you to control what paths sims take to work in the game? Usually the game takes up the whole screen, I'm a little confused, is this program part of the game/integrated into it, or separate from the game? -

Well, I'm gonna discontinue it and hit quit, since I'm pretty sure it's frozen. Unless, it takes, say a day or more to complete. Ah...........that was exactly what I needed to do
