Is SC4 still a viable city builder compared to others?
Crowbarr replied to Shazlow's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
At first I thought the graphics would let me down too, but well, it's like comparing Jagged Alliance 2, to Jagged Alliance Online. (If ANYONE gets that, I'll be happy) Prophet speaks the truth (lol), NAM is essential. I also use SPAM, and have a look at Paeng, he's got a bunch of awesome stuff. There is a 4gb_patch inside the NAM folder at Documents/Simcity 4/NAM Auxiliary Files/Tools. I'd recommend using that as it increases the RAM you can use for the game or some such, basically loads a little faster, might run faster too. Use the Traffic Simulator that comes with NAM, can play around with road capacities, fares for using public transport, PT use, and a few others. There is also a SC4 Data Packer https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=26 - This here will reduce the lag when you switch between underground and above ground, which will get pretty bad on massive maps, but you won't need it for small cities. SC4 Launcher is nice, has many functions you normally have to do via editing launch files and config files. I cannot post the link but search for SC4 Launcher. OH here's something you'll need. - doubles radius for public servies like cops and firestations. Real handy otherwise you'll be planting clinics every half kilometer. Get the industry doubler if you want, doubles the jobs in the industry zones. Crime doesn't pay 7- fixes the errors in not being able to police certain things like large parks and other things that wouldn't normally work in Simcity 4. I personally think all crime happening in the parks is hilarious, but it's a bug, so should fix it. Legalise Marijuana Ordinance Increases health, lowers crime Depending on your personal preference, this is either a must or a not needed. - Cheats.dll file which is not for giving yourself money, the one you'll want and NEED to use is Drawpaths and Hidepaths to show and hide the direction of traffic, which you'll want to check on if you're making complicated designs. All other cheats I haven't used. - A black hole to dump your rubbish in. No more garbage worries! Theres some sort of terrian mod that changes it so high mountains are now snowy instead of rocky, and the grass is a rich mountain green instead of lightish green, but I can't find it, and you don't need it, it's a personal thing. The others should be enough. I spent the first two days just downloading mods, but you don't need to. You'll probably start looking for specific things once you have an idea of something you want to build, then you'll hardly stop looking. Or you'll find one modders work that you really like, and then spend all day looking at every-single-thing-they-made. For example, I just stumbled across skiing paths for mountain snow ranges. Talk about specific, I instantly thought of creating a city for tourists and skiing etc, but I know I'll end up spending all night just downloading all the mods, so try not to go too crazy and keep it simple at first, you really don't need skiing paths lol. -

Ok thank you, I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong. Back to making highways!

Reading through the RHW readme, it shows RHW 6S as a single road with a capacity of 37500 on ULTRA. I have just over 10k traffic and it's a yellowish line. Should it not be blueish or less? Or is this a normal NAM traffic colour thing that cannot be helped?

In a game I used to play called "Stronghold" you could pay your citizens! Or just tax them like normal people would, but I preferred to make money through selling food etc and then give my peasants money, so I could have some people not even working, yet making money. Is this possible in Sim City 4? Paying citizens so they don't have to work? I just picture a utopia where only 10-20% of the people work, and the rest do whatever they want. Of course this springs up all those "no jobs" zots, and everyone leaves. Is there some way to pay your sims, so they just wander around unemployed and happy? Or is employment crucial to this game? I've even noticed in aging cities, my citizens are all working. Do sims hit an age and then "retire" or somesuch?

Also when using the traffic simulator it automatically can't find my NAM folder, but I can redirect it and locate the Traffic folder in my steam/simcity 4 plugins folder. In there even on Ultra Base Network Capacity, it shows RHW as 30000. Is that a base 30k to ALL RHW regardless of size? Maybe that is the problem?

I must be doing something wrong, I have set up RHW's with 6S which SHOULD have a capacity of roughly 75 thousand. Yet in traffic view, well it's showing just over ten thousand and well, here's a picture. I have used a NAM setting to boost traffic to ULTRA, but maybe it's not working? Totally confused. I used datapack to pack everything, then I noticed my cheats.dll wasn't working, so I have packed everything into my documents/simcity4/plugins thingo And then placed cheats.dll and a folder called "Traffic" into my steams simcity 4/plugins folder. "Traffic" contains an automata traffic display, and changes the traffic to ULTRA. The cheats menu works (I use drawpaths a lot) so I assume the folder called "Traffic" works as well as I'm seeing traffic on the streets all day, BUT. Well, picture time. A RHW with capactiy of 75000 is yellow/reddish at 10k? Something is wrong.

Ah okay. Thank you very much for the quick reply. Now to try to get my head around building highways and overpasses, underpasses, man there's so much to this game.

I'm having a slight problem, I'm missing the intersection texture for an avenue crossing through 2 R3 or higher pieces. Basically I line two R4 lanes up next to each other (two tiles wide, just like an avenue) but if I try to cross it THROUGH an avenue, I get a missing intersection texture. The road exists, there's just not an intersection. Anyone else getting this? ----- I removed everything from plugins, installed NAM 3.2 and still get this same problem. I cannot connect an avenue THROUGH a RHW larger than R2. It just gives me the grass underneath, but RHW is visible if I hover over the missing intersection area. Ah its weird. ----- http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2ug08xg&s=5#.UtlwhxB9Lcs

This might be a silly question, but I'm struggling to work out why I'm missing a texture. I can connect an avenue through another avenue. I can connect an avenue through an R2 highway But I can't connect an avenue through anything higher than R2, it just gives me a missing intersection texture. I'm not sure if avenues are supposed to go straight through a RHW but it seems to work, just missing the texture. I'll remove all my mods and try for the tenth time lol. Just writing this incase someone else has the same problem.
