  1. Growing pains?

Which is a very good argument for computer languages not being 'owned' by anybody. Oracle belongs in the dust of history. Oracle provides key software to businesses that only a few other companies do. With that said, the issue with Google and Android predates Oracle's buyout of Sun Microsystems. You are required to get a commercial/business license if you are decent sized company building a product for sale. Google stated they didn't have to have a license because they believed it should be "open sourced" and they shouldn't have to pay Sun Microsystems because "reasons". Android makes a few billion in ad revenue for Google and Sun Microsystem demanded Google pay up. Google kept refusing because "reasons". Sun Microsystems took them to court for stealing Java and other IP related stuff. Sun went bankrupt and Oracle bought them continuing the lawsuit. Google then claimed the bankruptcy of Sun, constituted nulling all IP protection of Java. Oracle pushed the issue and won. The U.S. Federal Courts agreed with Oracle/Sun that IP law and patents are still enforce during the duration of legal protection and patents. Google was found guilty of IP theft and among other things. Google appealed claiming it was the OEMs who were at fault and lost for good in over a billion dollar judgment. The courts told them to either rewrite Android to remove Java or license Java like everyone else. With this all said, Inventors have the right to profit of their inventions even if it is a new programming language. Without this right of profit very few things would be inventor
  2. Cities "XXL" Announced

This better come to OSX or no purchase from me (I don't switch into Windows very often). I hope this turns out well, but the current publisher I have no faith in.
  3. I bought Smash Bros Wii U tonight at Midnight. Played it for two hours and it was great. Gamestop gave out a bunch of goodies. Also got Pokemon Omega Ruby for 26.xx at Meijer due to mPerks.

      The Avatar

What kind of stuff did they give away?

  4. Why "cloud" services are not ready for people.

I trust in Apple. U.S. DOJ publicly stated children will DIE due to Apple's security protocols in OS X 10.10 and iOS8. There is no back door or private key for government from Apple in these new OSes. Also you cannot compromise all your Apple devices if one is compromised (unless you have passwords saved in a document), Apple also lets you kill/permanently lock any device of yours synced with iCloud (you get track their locations too).
  5. Super Smash Bros

I officially have had the Wii U version. The good: Controls are fully customizable in the controller menu All the controllers compatible with Wii U including GC (via an one of the two adapters) The graphics are 1080p and look stellar The frame rate is a steady 60FPS (no slow downs) Nearly every mode is Co-op, including classic. Amiibo support for those who want them Off TV play! The oodles of unlockables The oodles of levels The oodles of items The oodles of music The oodles of customization The ability to use a 3DS as a controller (only VIA the 3DS Smash game) Ability to transfer custom characters New level editor The ability to access Miiverse and post screenshots The ability to access a master piece game on the eShop from within the game The difficult select is back Others stuff... The Bad: having to unlock all the characters in the Wii U version (only applies if you have the 3DS game since launch) Getting lost due to have more than 4 players on the screen at once Others probably that I found yet The ODD: Classic mode has The curved levels Knowing the prizes certain characters have in Classic Shiny damage meter color (don't care for this) Other stuff I haven't discovered yet. I haven't played online yet... I've only played for 2 hours tonight. I also received a cardboard Smash Champion belt and Pokemon poster for going to Gamestop midnight launch. I have a Villager Amiibo which I posted in the Amiibo thread. Don't forget to register both the 3DS and Wii U versions on Club Nintendo to get the Soundtrack and Mewtwo (this spring for him).
  6. The first DLC pack is quite good. It only features 5 new courses and 3 retro The Master Cycle and triforce wheels are good parts. Link oddly fits into this game. Hyrule Castle is damn good track with Zelda enemies and sound effects. If you have MK8 I suggest you buy two DLC pack bundle for $12 while you still can.
  7. I bought villager tonight at Gamestop when I picked up Smash U He is much sturdier and heavier than he looks. Tomorrow I plan to get link.
  8. Just those two FE characters at the moment. Though according to Neogaf, many stores in many major cities are reporting sell outs of all the Amiibos. I hope I can nab Villager and Link tonight when I go to pick up Smash Bros U and Pokemon OR. Though Nintendo has promised are more Amiibos are coming in the future. These are the Smash series. I can't wait for an Animal Crossing Wii U that has an Animal Crossing Amiibo series (I will get them all somehow)!
  9. Why "cloud" services are not ready for people.

Correct. One Drive is consumer product and Azure is the business product. I use iCloud for everything and it works well now that 2.0 is up and going. This allows me to seamlessly as possible sync all my files stored on iCloud to all my Apple devices (Mac, iPad, and iPhone). It soon will allow seamless streaming of photos between them too. Google Drive is good for docs and collaborating on them, though iCloud allows this now too for Apple's Numbers, Pages, and Keynote. Google Drive also now allows for any file to be stored on it and used on any device that supports Google Drive and the Google Drive App. With that said, I don't fully entrust the cloud due to the ability to recover the files if something happens to their servers, I keep a file on my hard drive as well. I mean Microsoft had to bring in a bunch of other tech companies a few years back when their cloud service went down wiping out all the files, those other companies had to help them recover the "unrecoverable" data. Thankfully the other companies were able to recover most of the data.
  10. Growing pains?

Google isn't entirely at fault here for Android 5.0. The main reasons for 5.0 being buggy are: Google was forced to replace all the Java code in Android with its own code or pay a massive licensing cost to Oracle on top of the massive legal judgement Oracle won against Google over the previous Android versions. Google are under a lot of pressure from the OEMs to get Android updates and versions out quickly or have the OEMs jump ship to competitors OSes such as Tizen (Samsung) and Windows Mobile (Microsoft) Samsung holds between 75% - 80% of the global Android market share, and ~52% of the global market share for tablets, phones and PMPs (based on shipments to retailers, not sold to consumers). This makes Samsung #1 phone, tablet, and PMP maker globally (they produce more than everyone else... Sales tell a different story). Google is beholden to will of Samsung Tizen! Samsung has been threatening to jump ship from Android to its operating system, Tizen for all of its mobile devices. Samsung has been slowly helping and paying Android developers to port the most popular apps to Tizen to ensure Tizen can compete fully. When Samsung is fully ready to launch Tizen globally, Android will be left with less than 20% market share literally overnight. Oh Samsung produces most of the parts in the other Android phones. One last note Samsung accounts for 95% of all the profits made on Android hardware. OEMs also modify Android to their liking, which causes many of the issues Android faces. Competition! Windows Mobile and iOS8 are seen as blowing Android out of the water feature and UI wise. Apple is selling iPhone 6 and 6+ faster than they can make them (yes they are still in short supply). This forced Google to rush it to market. Updates... Android OEMs control which of their phones and when those phones get the updates (if at all). They also modify the Android patches to fit their version of Android. *note of interest: over 70% of Android devices run 4.1 or earlier, due to OEMs refusing to release the update software for their phones that can run them. Android OEMs typically withhold new Android updates from their existing hardware to force users to buy new hardware.
  11. Majora's Mask 3D for 3DS Confirmed

My own parents for one (at least, starting in 11th grade), although I am sure as you say that I am in the minority there. But that's beside the point as a child has no need to "borrow a parent's credit card". The parent can input the payment themselves and do so as a one time payment so the credit card info isn't stored for their child (or anyone else) to have access to. This requires the parent personally be involved in the purchase but that's no different than if they had to buy their kid a physical game from the store or Amazon or whatever. You expect way too much from parents and video game companies. After the PSN hacks and repeated attacks (there were two this year), XBL credit card issues and abusive charges from Microsoft, and Steam issues have shown that you shouldn't use credit cards on video game systems and Steam. Nintendo has gotten bad press over the past few years, due to people using their online games and apps for illegal purposes (Swapnote and Flipnote 3D were killed over it). All this has lead to people in general refusing to have their credit and debt cards used with gaming services. Parent's assume their card information is being stored, which is true for PSN, Steam, Origin, Xbox Live, iTunes, etc... Strangely enough only Nintendo's Wii Shop Channel and eShop (Wii U and 3DS use the same wallet), do not store your credit card information. Though the Wii Shop Channel had/has glaring security holes in it. With that said, the remake of Majora's Mask should outsell the original game (the original is the lowest selling mainline title since Zelda II). I might actually beat the remake, in part due to it being portable. TL;DR: avoid using your credit card on a video game system and Steam, unless it is the Nintendo eShop (Though I wouldn't)
  12. They only provided an extra bonus for those who want it. You don't need to have them for Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS, unless you want the special AI. I for one will buy a few (hopefully just a few) to get the bonuses and to have my favorite characters in physical form. I really just want the Zelda ones and a few others...
  13. Majora's Mask 3D for 3DS Confirmed

Because this remake literally redoes everything (including character models) and all of content that was cut from the original (including fishing) due to cart sizes and deadline. Also this remake has a stable 30FPS (or is it 60FPS), better lighting, and camera. But see, that's just it. By virtue of everything being redone it isn't the same game. Yes, the original had limitations, but it was a product of its era and modernizing it ruins the experience. Nobody would buy a classic car and pimp it out with bluetooth, USB, backup camera, GPS, etc. They buy a classic because they want it classic and true to its original form, as the technology of the time allowed it to be built. Same goes for video games. And granted, getting a hard copy of the original may be expensive if you don't already own an N64, but 2000 Wii points is $20, so the VC version is cheaper. Cheaper than the remake, as well! Yeah, you need a credit card to do that, but anyone in a financially sound enough position to own a modern game console is going to have one or have a parent who has one, so that's not exactly a tough hurdle to clear. Actually quite a few people would love to buy a classic car with modern technology in it. Gamers have been literally begging quite loudly for Nintendo to remake Majora's Mask to the original plans for over a decade. There probably will be a mode in the remake to play it in the original form. Also very few parents and people in general have used their credit cards on the Wii VC, Wii U and 3DS eShops according to Nintendo. PSN attacks have help dented credit card usage for digital gaming goods. I don't know what parents you know that would let their kids borrow their credit cards for anything, especially for a gaming service, but you maybe in the minority here. The long story short, Nintendo finally gave into the the ever increasing hostile demands for a Majora's Mask remake, just like they did with Ocarina of Time and other games. If you don't want the game and/or it's collectors edition, then don't buy it. I'll promise not to direct Majora's Mask fans to your door.
  14. Sonic Boom - As bad as 06

It's already been explained. Big Red Button (the developer) saw a mass exodus of employees during the development of the game causing most of the issue. Sega refused to delay the game, because they wanted it to launch with the cartoon this November. Sega refused to help in development and wouldn't let Nintendo step in. Though the game probably will sell decently like all Sonic games do in the West. Or maybe Nintendo is at fault for ruining this game like they did Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 and other games over the years.

The original game has an unstable frame rate which regularly runs sub 30FPS and at times drops below 23FPS in some sections. It also suffers from muddled textures, bad camera angles and other issues. All of this is in the Gamecube port and the VC versions, plus these versions have issues properly rendering the game due to the N64 expansion pack and processor. Also those who play the remake on the "New 3DSes" get some form of "bonuses". Watch the 3DS trailer to see many of the changes. With that said to get the original N64 it will cost you: N64 (hopefully including the needed system RAM expansion) which can cost you $50+ If you need the system RAM expansion it will cost you $20+ The game will cost you $40+ Finding a N64 controller with a usable analog stick will cost you $30+ ~$100 to play the original. To get the Gamecube port, you will need to shell out ~$100 for the Legend of Zelda: Collectors Edition which includes the game. To get the Wii version: You either get it from Club Nintendo buy spending CN coins essentially netting it for free (when it is available as a reward) You find a place that still sells 2000 Wii Point cards and redeem it and buy the VC versoin Hope you have or know someone who will lend you a credit card to buy the game of the Wii VC game (which you can play in off TV mode on Wii U) I already own the Gamecube port and would rather have the remake due to it being portable and having a stable frame rate.
  16. Many people are claiming this is future of new world societies, who's countries are built by immigration (mainly the Americas). Or is this just caused by drunken partying college students?
  17. Attack on Paliament Hill in Ottawa

This isn't possible and won't happen Canada will just send an angry letter detailing how angry they are, asking the group at fault not to do it again. If the group does it again, PM Harper will pay the sitting U.S. President and joint session of U.S. Congress to send American military to take care of the matter. The worst Canada has ever done to any group or person was ban them from Canada and/or issue an Interpol warrant. Costa Rica only having a coast guard, still gets even.
  18. Attack on Paliament Hill in Ottawa

The shooter was confirmed to be Canadian born, who recently converted to radical Islam (it just aired). Canada is a soft target with less security, but equally as guilty for who they fund, arm and invade at the international level (Iraq and others haven't forgotten). The U.S. intelligence services had picked up on threats to Parliament and Canada, which they informed Canada on October 11th. The U.S. intelligence has also told Canada to expect more acts of violence by their own citizens in the coming days and weeks. The U.S. Capitol building has three rings of security to get into the building, due to the last shooting at the end of the 1990s. The White House and Supreme Court are much easier to get into, granted only the White House is protected by the (not so) Secret Service Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was the shooter. http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/22/world/americas/canada-ottawa-shooting/
  19. Have video games finally gone too far?

Actually there isn't so much a drought as in there is a lack of diversity. What really happened was the following: Consumers wanted every better graphics Consumers shifted to realism and M rated games Developer wanted to make realistic M rated games Development costs went through the roof with HD development forcing developers to close and to focus on their best selling IPs. Consumers in the West quit buying anything that wasn't yearly sports game XXX and AAA blockbuster games etc.... Nintendo was the only major developer and platform holder who refused to play this game (they really can't afford to bleed billions on selling their systems below market costs like the competition) Consumers quit paying $20+ for colorful based games, because kiddy, casual, and inferior games. iOS came out and developers started racing to the bottom on price, now no one wants to pay more a few dollars for game on mobile/handheld Android came out and starting giving software away for free, now very few Android users want to pay anything for software. Steam came along and introduce massive sales at least twice a year, which causes PC users to wait and buy PC games for pennies on the dollar. Now gamers are complaining about having too many colorful/kiddy/casual games flooding Xbox One and PS4 at the expense of realism/shooters/hardcore games. They are also complaining about the lacks of shooters/hardcore games leading to many articles wondering if hardcore gaming is dead. Nintendo is suffering from having the image of being for casual/women/kids/Japanese, which is affecting what developers release on there systems. 3DS is widely ignored from gamers because it lacks mature/shooters/hardcore games and is handheld (handheld games aren't real games), while market data "shows" hardcore gamers prefer iOS devices over traditional handheld/PC games. Wii U suffers from many issues including too many colorful/kiddy/casual/minigames and lacking shooters/mature/hardcore games. If you see Simcity turn into a GTA/FPS/Mature games, don't be upset and surprised. P.S. Wii has a decent library of non mature/shooters/hardcore games that aren't made by Nintendo.

  21. Have video games finally gone too far?

People love violence to some degree, some people love it more than others. Entertainment and fun are in the eyes of the beholder. We still aren't as violent as Ancient Roman culture.
  22. City States

Monaco has one special difference than any other country in the world. Monaco's crown prince must produce a biological male heir to succeed the thrown. If crown prince fails to produce a biological male heir, by treaty with France, the city/country loses it's independence and returns to France. <snip> Huh? Did you mean 'succeed to the throne'? Very strange typo. Yes... No need to be a grammar nazi. Like I said if the crown prince fails to produce a biological heir the country reverts back to France.
  23. Have video games finally gone too far?

Have no fear, Rockstar already passed them by on Wii and PS2! I giveth you the Manhunt series from the makers of GTA. It is literally a gory murder simulation, where the more violent and bloody your murder is the more points you earn which in turn gives you a higher rank.

If crown prince fails to produce a biological male heir, by treaty with France, the city/country loses it's indepedence and returns to France. Singapore is also different. It went from being a UK military base/trading port, then to a city with a major port, indepedence, then joined Malaysa, then was ejected and became independent, then in turn signed a special defense treaty with the UK and has a UK base there too.
