Furthermore, Windows doesn't hate you, and thing's don't just happen. Considering my Windows came from the same place, in a very similar box, and is working very well, I doubt Windows is what caused the problem. Originally posted by: saltandsauce linux is a real operating systemquote> Possibly, but not a very useful one. For the most part, all CAD and 3d work is done on PCs because that's what Autodesk (maker of 3ds max, Inventor, Combustion, AutoCAD, etc) and Dassault Systems (maker of CATIA) release their software on. I'm sure you've heard of computer artists buying a Mac just so they could use specific Mac software, well if you're serious about 3D modeling you may just have to come to terms with a Windows Based PC. I don't think you're going to get around Windows and you may have to just accept that it works perfectly fine. A solution however is to use Innotek Virtual Box to create a virtual Windows machine and use that for your BAT. I'm sorry if you don't like it, but that's the best advice I can give. -
So considering Silur is from Moscow, does he just go out and drive to people's BATs and take photos for them? I think I need someone like that in NL.

Looking good. I realize you haven't added the grey section to the bottom yet, but I still would say the corners could be a bit taller or skinnier.

Chicago Spire vs. Freedom Tower
ianpaschal replied to kawan's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
The horse is dead. Quit beating it.quote> Love it when people say this. Takes two to argue. If you don't agree you didn't have to argue with my original post. I attacked the towers, and you attacked my opinion on them. You're not convincing me, and if you stop, I won't have to defend. I don't feel like taking my round again, so I'm done. If you feel you still need to convince me otherwise, go ahead. -
Chicago Spire vs. Freedom Tower

Originally posted by: Duke87 Originally posted by: ScipioThe Freedom tower, although a far better design than the Spire, is ridiculous. Building another big office building on the site of the destroyed one is a ***** way to honor victims of a terrorist attackquote>Nothing is being built on the original footprints of the two towers.quote> Au Contraire, as you say. I've done a lot of studying of the Twin Towers and actually saw a documentary on NYC infrastructure last night. The Twin Towers were built in what the designers called a "bathtub" to keep the foundations from flooding from the Hudson. (Think of digging on a beach, when you reach the water, it caves in). That bathtub was almost completely unharmed after September 11th, and is now being used as the foundation for the new buildings. No, they may be a few feet to the side, but they're literally built on the same pieces of concrete. it seems like a stupid idea to build another big tower on the site of a terrorist attack that is asking to be attacked 10 times more than the previous one.quote>Au Contraire. It's a stupid idea not to build another big tower there. Because if we do that, we're giving in to fear- and that means the terrorists win. Besides, the new tower is being built really sturdy, above and beyond the code, and with lots of safety features. The engineering lessons learned from the collapse of the old towers are being well applied. quote> That's the same silly mentality that I hate. Showing no fear is a stupid and ignorant thing. It does not promote understanding or peace. Besides, the terrorists DID win. They killed thousands of people and we have yet to bring in Osama. Building a new office building does not make us stronger or any more likely to prevail against the forces of evil. I can't take a lame excuse for a monument that also happens to make a lot of money seriously, quote>It's not a monument, it's an office building. Making money is what it's supposed to do- as was done there before 9/11.quote> That's not how it works. It IS a monument regardless of what plaque you put on it. It still is the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Take a civil war monument. It's not so much that the cannon is the monument and the rest is park, end of story, the whole site has meaning. I just think that the Ground Zero SITE all of which holds meaning, and that I doubt those who have lost loved ones on that city block will only see a pretty sign that says Monument as the part that has meaning. I think the area should be made into a park. Something peaceful for the mass grave that the towers became. But no, only a small portion of the site becomes your little monument and the rest becomes offices again. especially when it's got a name so stupid and cliche as the "freedom" tower. I would knock over the architectural model just for the fun of pushing over something that takes itself so seriously to be called the freedom tower.quote>Ugh. Again with the complaining about the name. Give it a rest, already.quote> The name says a lot about what the building is trying to be. And I can't take it seriously. -
I give votes to LA, or Detroit. One small example of terrible urban development was the Bijlermeer near Amsterdam.

Originally posted by: nofunk Holy crap, Scips! That looks beautiful! That's not 3ds, is it? (Looks almost like Sketchup.) How do you get such great edge definition?quote> Thanks, and yeah, it is 3dsmax. That's a straight up render, not a SC4 preview, so I can get it in perspective and much higher resolution. The lighting was done but just putting a huge white plane (like 1000 x 1000) under the model, and dropping in a Skylight with "Cast shadows" turned on. It creates a very nice ambient shadow complex which when combined with a Directional light can create some very convincing daylight.

Cool topic! Here's what I'm working on: The 4 hour windmill. Will texture soon: The 2 day row house. Will try to texture soon: close up:

Chicago Spire vs. Freedom Tower
ianpaschal replied to kawan's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Where's the neither button? The Freedom tower, although a far better design than the Spire, is ridiculous. Building another big office building on the site of the destroyed one is a ***** way to honor victims of a terrorist attack and it seems like a stupid idea to build another big tower on the site of a terrorist attack that is asking to be attacked 10 times more than the previous one. I can't take a lame excuse for a monument that also happens to make a lot of money seriously, especially when it's got a name so stupid and cliche as the "freedom" tower. I would knock over the architectural model just for the fun of pushing over something that takes itself so seriously to be called the freedom tower. That being said, it is every so slightly more appealing than the Spire. The spire just looks like a joke. It's a hideous design that shows little regard for any sort of aesthetics other than "let's build a rediculously large tower with shiny glass and no base just to look crazy." It looks terrible and might be able to pass as a decently designed building if it were half that height. For a city like chicago it looks as silly and pretentious as a rapper with a grapefruit sized diamond ring. Some cities, and I'm thinking Dubai here, already have the style to experiment. A city like chicago though that has very few super-skyscrapers looks silly with that silver spire amongst its dark blocky Sears Tower and John Han***** buildings. And frankly, I think Chicago has far more areas that could use a face lift than it's downtown. -

Quick TUT on moving objects to perfect location

Originally posted by: SimFox Oh My GUD!I can't believe my eyes!! Bixel is using snaps!! :-)quote> I feel the same way about one of my best friends. I have to remind him before every project we do to turn on snaps. It's just easier that way. Besides I'm a perfectionist and I get really angry when something is 0.001 off and when I try to move it 0.001 units to the left, 3ds max ignores me! Then I have to set the tolerance to 4 decimal places, move it over .001 and go back to 3 points -

I saw a World Transform Type In tutorial or in other words tehomghandyF12 window. Neat idea though. You could do a whole series of super mini tutorials focusing on general ideas. I could help too if you decided to do it. -

You must not be any kind of artist or have any work or intellectual property under your name. Remind me to never give you any of my work, sine I know you won't treat it with a lick of respect. Most artists will imply that they prefer their work not to be redistributed without permission, and if they don't care, they'll usually say so. I think if it was okay for that guy to use GLENNI'S building is up to GLENNI not you. quote> Where did that come from? That's totally uncalled for.quote> Not at all. It's quite apparent that you don't really understand the artist's point of view. By saying things like; "Another example of this stupid sue-your-ass-or-get-permission mentality," you show that you: A. Don't really understand how it feels to have your work redistributed against your wishes. B. Don't treat artist's work with respect and feel you can and should do with it whatever the hell you please. It's not a mentality, its morality. This kind of morality involves intellectual property, which I doubt you have, or you would share this view. Suppose you wrote a song, and then played it for your friend. That song was your property, but your friend is actually you, and feels he "shouldn't be afraid to use his computer" to post it on forums freely. Before you know it everyone else is playing this song and stealing your credit. Might feel pretty crummy. I know it does when I have my ideas or work stolen, and unless you can read people's minds, you'd do well to ask them before you do it. -

Tutorial: Converting Microsoft Flight Simulator aircraft into props
ianpaschal replied to ardecila's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Correct. Here's a map I made for a house for a 3d game, it was low poly, and the textures all needed to be in one PNG file. Here's how I would it: 1. Get all my textures, side on fuselage, top down wings, etc., and put them all one one map. 2. Break the plane up into parts that will be textured top down, such as wings, and parts that will be textures from the side, such as the fuselage and tail. 3. First apply planar UV maps from the UV Map Modifier on each piece just to get them straightened out, and then reconvert them to meshes or polies or whatever. Use the X Y and Z buttons to get it the right direction and it "Fit" to make it the right shape. 4. Then apply a UVW unwrap modifier and click edit. Click the drop down menu on the upper right to set it to show your texture, then if you had done the previous step right, then you will see a wireframe of your wing, transposed over the texture. Now you need to move it and scale it and adjust it so that it fits right over the texture, and voila! there it is! 5. After you have mapped every wing, you can convert all the pieces back into Polys or Meshes which will colapse their modifiers and mapping coordinates into the poly, then reattach everything. -
I agree with Paul, the roof textures look great as do the window and doors, but to me the actual grey stone and the orange brick look a little too clean and perfect. It might look good if you could dirty them up a bit or stain some the stone like how the roof is a bit blotchy. I don't know if you use Photoshop, but the way I often make dirt and stuff on my textures is to use splotchy brush and set the mode to "Multiply" and opacity to about 10 or something and just dab on some dirt and stain. It really helps the building's appearance look like it wasn't just built yesterday. Just a suggestion though. I know we have very different styles when it comes to BATing

Originally posted by: SimFox there is always forward compatibility - meaning scene from MAX8 will be openable in Max 9, MAX2008 etc, but not backward (max9 scene wouldn't open in Max8 etc) Many people cry over this issue but if you think of it it's a bit silly. New versions ALWAYS can do all the same stuff old one could.quote> Of course, I don't doubt that, but I can't get a copy of 9 or 2008 that will last more than a year. I would upgrade in a snap from lifetime 8 to lifetime 9 or 2008, but since they will stop working in a year, I am upset about backward compatibilty, not forward.
