  1. Maintenace/Performance thread.

Yep, site's still not responding very well. Hell, this page is still loading, even though everything is visible. Forum index is worst though, while the home page loads relatively quickly, the forum index can often take upwards of five to ten minutes to load. Individual topics are almost as bad. STEX is responsive, so all my loading-related problems are to do with the forums.
  2. American Politics

I've been hearing about something called SOPA, currently being debated in Congress (though I might be a little out-of-date since apparently they've adjourned for a while). Reading about it, it seems to be quite concerning, as it gives copyright holders the ability to take down websites (via court order) by directly attacking the website's sources of income. Fair enough, but that's not the most concerning bit. The fact that they have the ability to force ISPs to block that website completely from search results, from being accessed (via DNS blocking), is. There's been a lot of debate on the internet about it, but curiously it's being kept quiet on the traditional news agencies. There's also no mention at all of fair use, meaning that it's possible that things like "Let's Play" videos may end up being taken down, game mods end up being taken down by companies that don't support them, and so on. It doesn't sound good to me at all, to be honest... Thoughts?
  3. Member of the Month Awards: November, 2011

Oh lawd, dingos? Thanks guys for the awards, and congrats to BIWDC for getting MOTM.
  4. Minecraft

When 1.8 came out, the biomes got reworked. I don't like how swamp biomes look but at least they've tried to make biomes better. There is only so much you can do with procedural code, and quite honestly... I'd rather that Jeb work on making the game itself better than screwing around with biome code (because I'm honestly getting a bit sick of having to reload a new world every time an update comes out). I'd love to see more block types in particular, but one day, they'll come along.
  5. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

On the subject of kitschy 80s cartoons... edit: Damnit, I really hate rich text editing
  6. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

It is a bug. There is a specific command. (did a quick look-up, I actually had to use it): GetStage <id> - Used to get the current quest stage for given quest ID (use command ShowQuestTargets for IDs). SetStage <id> - Used to set the quest stage (Useful for bugged quests), for given quest ID (use command ShowQuestTargets for IDs). Common usage is to add 10 to the stage number given to advance past a bugged portion of a quest. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Ill_Met_By_Moonlight - this has the quest ID and stage you'll need in order to do the console command.
  7. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

If you're on PC, you might have to open up the console and mark the quest as "completed". There are instructions on the Internet to do that. On consoles, you're screwed For those who don't know what the last picture's all about, watch this video:
  8. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Hehe, looks like you've just experienced the goodness that is the Creation Engine's AI. A lot of stuff is done randomly (including quite a few dragon spawns too, which is very annoying). I saw a video on Youtube of some guy spawning dragons using console commands and he just happened to be standing outside of a village... and all the dragons decided to attack the village. Awfully nice of them isn't it. Haven't played Skyrim for a while, got some RL issues to deal with at the moment and the fact that my 360 controller broke so I'm using my PC's wired controller with it at the moment.
  9. The End of Challenger Hwy

<3 this update. You've done well
  10. my computer build, thoughts?

If he's buying from NewEgg (for instance), they offer an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for $100... which is only available to system builders (I believe the minimum requirements are that you must buy a CPU, RAM, motherboard and hard disk drive in a single order to be eligible). Android is Java-based. That means you can write Android programs wherever you want (whether it be on Mac, Linux or Windows) and the ADK that Google provides has built in emulation. A lot of Android devices also use a keyboard - in the case of tablets, it's quite easy to attach a USB keyboard to them anyway... or a wireless one, most tablets have Bluetooth. Dell have really made huge strides lately in making their whole assembly line process as efficient as possible so they're comparable to PC stores that sell individual parts (including a small profit margin per PC assembled and sold). Dell's quality, on the other hand... Hamster, I hear you about the HD prices. I built a desktop not long ago, and was mercifully lucky enough to have a spare 1.5TB hard disk drive sitting around doing nothing, it would've added another $200 to my build, which was money that could've been spent on my graphics card. Where are you getting your parts from? It might pay to shop around at multiple suppliers and get the best possible price.
  11. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

It's still DX9, unfortunately. Bethesda have talked about releasing a DX11 patch later on down the track though... It could be your RAM. Maybe add more, and it'll be able to run smoother.
  12. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

New graphics card means new settings... so I upped all my settings in Skyrim to maximum.
  13. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

It might be smaller, but it's so dense compared to Oblivion's map. By that I mean everywhere you look, there's always something nicely hidden in a corner of the map or whatever... it's just got so much more variety than Cyrodiil ever did. In that sense, Skyrim is much bigger, even though it may be smaller in land area, it certainly doesn't feel like it.
  14. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Well, I have my shadows set to low (as my graphics card can't really handle it), but just about everything else is set to max. Heard this little tidbit today: "My character took a bath today. Now he's Dovahclean." Terrible play on words there. Anyway - I realised I forgot to talk about My character is a male Nord, level 13 now (taking it slow, taking in the sights...). He lugs around an Orcish greatsword, and still wears armour that he stole from an Imperial commander at the beginning of the game. He has quite a high skill level in heavy armour, has a few points in Archery, a couple points in one-handed fighting and is a pretty good smith all-around, too. He's a bit of an all-rounder, but it's always nice to beat the crap out of most bandits that dare try to kill me.
  15. SimCity for Android

The Android OS can be emulated on PC, but that's only for development. Pap for the masses? Really?
  16. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Alright guys, we're not here to argue about FPSes, there's another topic for that. From the diary of my character: Today, I was bored and decided to clear out a few places of bandits. That certainly made me feel better. Plenty of great anecdotes to have in Skyrim - everyone has their own story to tell. For instance, my roommate (who also has the game) got ambushed in the Mages College by a dragon, not once, not twice, but three times. He wasn't too happy about it. Does anyone have any awesome stories to tell about their character?
  17. Paradise - Lincon

Yay FARHW I like how you've done the beach though, it looks good. Lots of little small towns on the coast, huh?
  18. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The road to Riften is very lovely. Just a note: I don't have my graphics set to maximum.
  19. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I got Skyrim today. I've come to one conclusion: it is by far the best TES game I have played. After 10 minutes of fiddling with the character creation, I came to another conclusion. It is entirely possible to create a character that looks like a drag queen and/or one of the members of KISS. Bethesda have outdone themselves this time.
