This game could be named patience. Every NPC in the game is a distinct individual with a name and job. They have kids and they get old and die. Don't pay attention for instance, and your teacher could die and cause the school to close. It did it to me. You micromanage this game. Use pause if you walk away. It doesn't forgive inattention.

Update 6.0 release notes
morriswalters replied to rudie75's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Well, yeah. However will electronics be freight? Will they let you import freight in the trade centers? How they implement this will tell the tale. However I'm waiting for something that means something. The game was working fine for me. And when I played it last after patch 5 Armageddon didn't come down and wreck my cities. But if they don't add some content and an offline mode then I've gotten everything that I find useful from it. As it stood when I quit playing I had no traffic issues, no money issues, no gifting issues, and could pretty much do whatever I felt like doing. At which point it lost my interest. I suspect that the number of players has dropped off on their servers. And old farts like me don't get to answer surveys. -
Update 6.0 release notes

All due respect to those posting but, but the complaint I have seen the most is that RCI is broken. The question in my mind is what counts as freight? -
Industrial Tech Levels
morriswalters replied to Jons511's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Use the building density overlay. They upgrade when the tech level peaks. -
Sims Can Not Find Shops or Parks
morriswalters replied to Aussie123's topic in SimCity (2013) Technical Help Q&A
The complaint was that medium wealth would never abandon because of no shops. They tinked it. You have to have medium wealth shops. Parks will not satisfy them completely. -
Reduce services to the lowest levels that can maintain your city. If you aren't doing high tech use cheap schools and forget Universities Don't recycle. It just pushes you to spend. Use the cheapest energy per megawatt. Do what cities do.

Sims Can Not Find Shops or Parks
morriswalters replied to Aussie123's topic in SimCity (2013) Technical Help Q&A
On the last patch they changed the way medium wealth responds to not having enough shops. It's much more sensitive to it now. Zone more medium wealth shops. -
Nuclear Radiation doesn't make sense and is a joke
morriswalters replied to Zades's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
If you must use nuclear, I would put it in one corner as close in as you can get. The effects are circular. 3/4 of the effect will happen off map if it goes up. Radiation will never go away, and you can't clean it up. 38 game years for the lightest band to go away. Or as has been suggested by others put it on another map, get it working and sharing power and never go back. It's only saving grace is that it is compact. Couple of other things. Use them at your own risk, I don't know you if they don't work. Put your trash dumps around the Station. The Lizard goes for the trash. Give him a target that is not you plant. For him to get the station he has to spawn on it. I've never seen an earthquake spawn in a corner, but I have seen them on an edge. Same for meteor strikes. But the random nature of these events makes nukes a bad choice. -
Question: How to quickly upgrade HQ's
morriswalters replied to CosmicSpeed's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Because trade upgrades are based on your daily profit. You made them one day and sold another. What you sold was pure profit for the day you sold them. The cost to manufacture was occurred the previous day. Does that make sense? -
Question: How to quickly upgrade HQ's
morriswalters replied to CosmicSpeed's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Here's the deal. Use Skye's Gambit to get your first million.(3 residential to 2 commercial or something close to that, over your map using dirt roads jacking the taxes up to whatever the Sims will live with) Then clean it up add services and schools and update the roads. After you unlock the Community College build 5 level two tech factories. That unlocks the processor factory. Set a small trade center. Import alloy and plastic and export processors. You are on your way. I got to 1.3 million in about a half hour. I could have kept adding factories until I ran out of space. Once you have the money rolling in its just a matter of time to unlock the trade facilities and electronics to the max. This gives you all the trade center lots. In the current market on NW4 computers are the money machine. The biggest problem you face is getting your product to market. No mining and no drilling. If they make the market work it could change but that is the way it is today. I'm not saying that this is the way to play the game, but if you are going to compete on the leader boards than you will probably do something like it. -

Never mine or drill. Import and sell. Resource extraction is purposeless. -
Should SimCity be more 'realistic;
morriswalters replied to mcallisterw's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
It's a game. If it's fun for you then it's achieved it's purpose. If it's not it didn't. EA's purpose is to make money giving you something fun to do. Sometimes it doesn't work. Personally I had fun with it. But I can see how others might not. -
Nuclear Meltdown
morriswalters replied to My Name is Pain's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
The radiation will never clear. 38 years per shading, Live with or destroy and move on. -
The city will continue as before, but property won't develop. Anything that fails stays failed until you reconnect.

What are TVs and Computers for?
morriswalters replied to warrior's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I know this is a stupid question but what can you do with the money? When I do things to make money it is generally so I can do something with it. Given that everybody who plays this game can come to the same conclusion about how to make money what do you think might be the end result? There are a finite number of maps and a finite amount of space on those maps. Is there some content that will reward my effort. I can build a city that will make just as much money over the long haul as anything that can be made with electronics. If competition is the idea than they should fix the market and the leader board before people who like playing that way drift out or get to used to the prices available now. We are 2 months plus into it and that part of the game isn't working. And for someone like me the headaches are starting to outweigh the fun. Where is the game? -
How to get 400k poplution city?
morriswalters replied to zainkool's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
For what its worth, it isn't really hard as long as you stick rigidly to a grid. You can do it with no mass transit at all if you make it a RC city with no industry. It will look pretty much like the preceding picture. High density residential with high density commercial. -
Mass exodus. A bug? Or did I tip the delicate balance?
morriswalters replied to rigurat's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I believe there might be a trigger involved, maybe differential rates, but also a tax rate set at 12 percent or higher. You may have activated it by changing the status quo. I was running some tests and had business start to complain and abandon at that point. -
Is the game too easy?
morriswalters replied to simmarine's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
The game has a layer of complexity. It can be as hard or as easy as you want it to be. The current limitations revolve around region play, or rather the lack of consistent mechanisms for region play and map size. Insufficient content is another lack. There is not enough diversity in buildings to go small. No decorations nor the space to use them. There is nowhere to go and no way to spend in game money after some point. When and if they sort out region play in a way the gives reliable and repeatable connections, it should be possible to do all these things. Either they faced some unknown technical hurdle or they lacked sufficient imagination. -
So how do I get the "out of Money" problem under control?
morriswalters replied to DrBob75's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
The agents behavior is random so a certain amount of out of money events follow from that. Overtime some will refill. But there is no point where it will go away. Not with a city of 1000 or 500,000. The cities are not precisely static, but again over time they will pretty much get to a point and then bounce around it. Abandoning and refilling. When it reaches this point you can watch for buildings which repeat this process and bulldoze if you wish. The homeless will follow this trend. If you are building it will be much worse since every change you make cascades though out your city. Maintaining open jobs helps. But there is no way to know where open jobs are at. I have a city currently of around 460 k which is making money hand over fist. But still I get abandons, even with 7000 or so open job slots. Edit. I have never seen a building that is closed for lack of workers reopen, and I'm not sure that they don't have workers. but anyhow. -
So how do I get the "out of Money" problem under control?
morriswalters replied to DrBob75's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Another way of saying it is to have more jobs than Sims. Better unfilled jobs than unemployed Sims. Residential and commercial are often mixed in the world. When you have a number of high density buildings face them in different directions. Buses are messed up, they are too random. But streetcars do work and can reduce traffic. However if you plan well it is possible to get to 500 k with no mass transit. Edit Dezone when that happens. The game will try to build back. Don't let it. I dezone everything and rezone what I want to return. If something fails twice, I move it. -
Pollution ain't that bad - is it?
morriswalters replied to tnobles's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Ask yourself why you are building industry. This isn't SC4. Industry does nothing but consume tech and ship freight. You can build a successful city without it. There is no reason for its existence, except as eye candy. Any factory that produces things that have value are in the trade specializations and produce enough money to deal with the pollution. Commercial supplies more jobs and income. It is easier to deal with ground pollution. Don't burn trash until late in the game. Destroy the dumps and use trees to clean up the ground pollution. I have even unlocked the Lizard and spawned him in my dump to eat trash. If you must have industry for the visuals you wish to achieve then be sparing of it and wait until you have a University to help keep pollution down. A hospital with wellness vans will help, but that is expensive. Trees will also help but you have to continuously replant. -
Show me your ...population!
morriswalters replied to xXZoraLinkXx's topic in SimCity (2013) Showcase
Mine, No mass transit. self contained RC city. Currently suffering from the pollution bug. -
Post a picture or else everyone is just guessing. My guess is add more capacity. The dialogs don't always reflect usage correctly.

"...you want your ratio of residential to commercial & industrial to be 3:1:1. "
morriswalters replied to 5uper_Mania's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
The latest. At about 138 k give or take. Still no mass transit. Had to add recycling. Generated too much trash and had to add a second burner. Didn't like that. Love the building density display. It gives me the best feedback, quickly about the what's going on. Did some demo to add another avenue. Has anyone noticed that trash and recycling are no longer quitting at scheduled times? Or did I miss something. Waiting for the next disaster.
