nybt-forum-threads NYBT BAT Thread
Jumpthefence replied to simcity4fan12's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Sorry I haven't been here in a long time, haven't responded to Krptowhite's email, or done much BATing in the last week. I was storing a file on my computer that made it run too slowly for much of anything. (Yes, I'm worse than Brandon. I take breaks without telling you! ) But since I'm done, I can talk! I took Kryptowhite's advice on aging/wearing down my buildings. At the moment, they don't look like a place I would like to live in, but they're just missing... something. Some final touch that will really make them a repulsive slum. Little help? I can't figure it out. PBGV103: Not bad at all! I don't see a single detail you may have overlooked. Gwail: I'm not in the family photo... Ah well. I suppose I would have a better chance if I actually made skyscrapers. Kryptowhite: Where is he? He's going to be snowed in by tomorrow, as will I, and New York City, and the entire northeastern United States. Speaking of that storm, I guess it would be a good time to BAT. See y'all later! -
New high rise BAT - RESIDENTIAL ???
Jumpthefence replied to Mich280582's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Frankly, there are few residential high rises to model in the real world. Often a city is surrounded by lower density housing units around a hub of commercial, or maybe industrial. This means the buildings in the hub are high rise, while the surrounding buildings are shorter. If you need an example, look at Union City, New Jersey. Right acroos from midtown Manhattan, yet it's mostly just houses and a few apartments. So it would seem expected that there are fewer high rise residential than commercial. So I do agree with you, there are less high density residential BATs, but I accept it because it seems like a reasonable outcome. -
How many tiles is one mile in SC4?
Jumpthefence replied to trojan_47's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Every tile is equal to 16 by 16 meters. There are 5,280 feet in a mile, which roughly converts to 1609 meters. About 1609 meters / 16 meters per tile = 100.584 tiles. There you have it. Also, if it's any help, one small city is 64 tiles wide by 64 tiles, a medium city is 128 by 128 and a large one is 256 by 256. That seemed like it'll help you... -
For Windows Users For Mac Users I also suggest downloading this, I'm not sure if it's vital, but it'll help anyways. And I assume you have the 2009 NAM, correct? If not update/download that version.

I can at least tell you it's very possible. It's a simple mod, but it's time consuming and just not very desirable by most people[, a mod that specific]. All you have to do is raise the "A" Factor of req. demand for each mansion with a modding program. You may be asking "What is he saying?". Simply put, you make it so each mansion needs an incredibly high, unrealistic amount of demand to grow. The problem is that you have to do so with every mansion lot, and since there are probably over 20, it just takes too much time.

I suppose there's always the Rural Highway Mod... that goes up to 2 squares wide and 10 lanes per direction. The entire interstate takes up 4 squares and 20 lanes. Plus, the off-ramps and such can make a complicated intersection.
-
Use the "Edit Mesh" Modifier with the "Vertex" button selected for very tricky shapes. This is very time consuming, I would use it only if you have to. Otherwise, try to use geometry (new shapes). Keep in mind, you can move multiple points, or vertices, by holding Control and selecting several of them. Please post any more problems if they arise.

nybt-forum-threads NYBT BAT Thread
Jumpthefence replied to simcity4fan12's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
(tiredly) Buh, how long hash it been? I wash in a threads like thish one just some times ago... (awake) Oh, yeah, I'm finally back to the forum! Hackensack and homework, places to go, people to see, things to do, that such. But enough of that, Chinatown Shops can be considered done. Unless I encounter a huge problem, I'm shooting for a release on Sunday, the next day I know I won't be doing too much. I was thinking of Little Italy next, namely three or so buildings around the Mott-Hester intersection (if anyone actually knows where that is). Gwail: I like the new queries very much! I had a version from a few months ago, and it was messing with my game (the queries were all orange), so I couldn't add it to anything. But even though I haven't tested the new version, I'm confident in you. Good work! -
Oh, look it's another NYBT member. What's up with them? There's this one kid with and "i" for an icon from Western Massachusetts that gets vertigo around tall buildings, so he confides in BATing short little Chinatown buildings. But NYBT is up and coming really quickly. 14 members, well probably 10 currently active ones, that's still not bad. Is that the largest team on Simtropolis? Maybe. And then there's HKABT. Their BATs aren't just well done and detailed, but you don't find many other Asian buildings anywhere in the Simcity community. Even if you did, I think they wouldn't compete anyways. NDEX... I know the name, and it's a good team, but they broke up, eh? Tis a shame, I like their work. BSP has some of the best BATers on Simtropolis. Simple. Good attention to detail, too. Roof textures, especially. BSC is basically the Standard Oil of BAT teams. So large, there are probably plots and controversies made up about them(?), lots of members, lots of products. I do feel bad for some of the teams that never got off the ground. I know the MEP (Middle East Project) might be struggling; I wish them the best. There's also the independent BATers who could benefit from joining a team. Not the case with all of them, but it's a good way to get started.

Except for roof textures, it's done. Even the roof junk is done; there's four pipes and two roof accesses. That's it. I am really darn happy about the street level. Especially those tables spilling out onto the street. That's realistic! It was pretty easy considering how only one wall has details, and the back has just a few doors. Any suggestions are welcome. I'll be in New Jersey until Friday night, everyone have a great Thanksgiving Day! -

The last month or two's work condensed into a single, poorly-edited image. And it needs another few weeks to be completely finished. Irony: I'll be spending Thanksgiving Day in Hackensack, New Jersey, about 10 miles from Midtown, Manhattan. More Irony: Friday I'll probably be going into the City, maybe go to a mueseum or something. Even more Irony: If my step-grandmother who lived in Beijing is here, we might go to Chinatown. If I don't get a chance to post again, Happy Thanksgiving Day y'all! -
If you are running Windows (I have XP, but it should work with any operating system), the directory for SC4 pictures is here: My Documents > Simcity 4 > Albums > [City name]-[numbers] In this folder there will be all sorts of files, notepads, INFO, but you want the PNG files. Those are the pictures you've taken.

Why is it that I always have power shortages and I have 2 power plants.
Jumpthefence replied to cessna172's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
If you deleted one pair of power plants and replaced them, that could be your problem. The game updates itself every game-month. The bulldozing of the first power plants will cause an outage over the entire city. If you replace the power plants, there will still be power zots, though when you query, there should be power. After a game-month, the zots should go away. Have you run the city for more than a game-month? -
grasping at straws 1. trying to find some way to succeed when nothing you choose is likely to work Jerry, grasping at straws, searched the backup tapes from last week, looking for the missing files. 2. trying to find reasons to feel hopeful about a bad situation She thinks he might still be interested because he calls her now and then but I think she's clutching at straws.

Originally posted by: Kryptowhite the roof top awning/outline type thing [once again, no gmax colors...try a dirty green copper?]. As for the wall texture, using the burn tool in photoshop should work nicely.quote> Consider it done! Oh look, it is... I don't know if you can see the messed up wall texture [because of the Paint program's anti-aliasing], but trust me, it's there. I would desribe it as tan bricks with oozing mortar that's discolored slightly green in some areas. Is that a good texture? As for the awning thing, I need to add grime and dull the black lines. As you may have noticed, I also redid the roof and roof textures. I finally found some decent satellite images, and it turns out much lighter than I'd thought. It's actually even lighter than in the model right there, but that would be way too bright. The roof junk may need better textures too. Yeah, they definitely need work. for the second one, work on the street level textures [don't use gmax colors for textures there]quote> Well, there inlies the problems. The building already doesn't have much of a texture for me to model. See? Just black and brown paint. What do you suggest? Oh, and any other suggestions are welcome. Kryptowhite: Well, I got to this point so fast because I train with some of the best in the business. That would be you, if you didn't firgure it out yet. Aaron Graham: That was quite a rambling, punctuation-free sentence. And thank you! Vlasky: When I started, I couldn't make much of anything well. Luckily, there are many, many people on ST willing to help. Don't be discouraged by where you are today, be hopeful for where you can be tomorrow. cmdp[numbers]: I agree. Plus, I have a left-corner building, a right-corner building, so I'm going to need a filler or two. And, even better, a W2W building on two sides would be pretty easy to make. -

Tomorrow I'll post pictures of both 69 and 72 Bayard Street. quote> And here they are! The one on top, the pink one, is 69 Bayard Street. The other is 72 Bayard Street. I'm really happy with 69 Bayard Street. All the extra time spent really paid off, especially on textures. On the other hand, 72 Bayard looks really... unfinished. I'm not liking the roof texture or the roof junk. I think I'll completely scrap it and start fresh. The wall textures also look to bright and not gritty enough. I am happy with the street level though, so that doesn't leave much at all. - Smaller and more roof junk - New, darker, less contrasting roof texture - New set of wall textures Any other suggestions before I get to work? Postscript: What do you think, should I upload these two buildings to the STEX, or make another and call it a 'pack'? -

Alright, I'm back from the darkness of too much homework! So I've been doing some work on 69 Bayard Street and I think it's about done. Tomorrow I'll post pictures of both 69 and 72 Bayard Street. They're not nessecarily done, and they're not rendered, so I would love suggestions if you have any. Also, should I make one more building from that intersection of Bayard/Mott, or should I upload what I have (2 buildings)? I was thinking it takes 3 or more buildings to really make a "pack", but whatever. Simcity4fan12: Nice work [on Home Insurance Plaza]! That seems like a relatively simple building, and I like what you've done with it! I especially like how the windows near the bottom are (realistically) darker than the higher ones. Y'know, reflections and everything. Kryptowhite: Wow... especially the upper roof, that's cool. Keep up the good work! Hanson784: Sounds good, can't wait for a picture if you have any! -

Is there an easy way to find the centre/middle of a city?
Jumpthefence replied to stevenoon's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
If money wasn't an issue, you could easily drag diagonal roads from one corner to another, and where they intersect is your middle. Well, it's accurate to within 2 squares. Eh, I hope that helps in some way. -

Here! Have a picture. That there would be the front of 69 Bayard Street. So, I'm going to put some junk in the windows on street level, and maybe some junk in the upper windows. Most of all, I'll be adding roof junk. You can see some already there. It's preliminary, and a bit grey, but it'll be done! Eventually. I can tell I'll have some fun with this roof texture... I don't know why. Random Fact: There are a lot of fire escapes on this building. Is three really nessecary? -
Sims prefer unemployment or out-of-town jobs
Jumpthefence replied to Moonraker0's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
When you query the residential buildings, do they say "Long" next to "Commute Time"? It looks like a relatively long distance between the workers and their jobs, which can be your problem right there. Also, for the people who aren't abandoning, where are they working, and how are they getting there? Do they use that El Rail there? -

Originally posted by: Aaron Graham Well Jumpthefence I hope that you show us some of your work on Veteran's Day.quote> Yeah! Why didn't I think of that? Aside from roof junk and roof textures, it's essentially done. Maybe a few more street details and more window color randomness, but that's essentially it. I'm going to refer back to that old BAT saying: Measure twice, cut once. Well, that's a good one too, but I was talking about Good textures are made, not found. I spent all morning, about 4 hours, just on those wall textures. No exaggeration. But you have to admit, it's not bad looking and it's darn close to the real thing. Meh, I'm just rambling. Things seem to have slowed down to my speed here... we're not burning through 5 pages in a week. I can keep up. Sorry I haven't been here in a bit. Rhinovirus, H1N1, Stomach Bug, I had it all! Seriously. I have tomorrow off for Veteran's Day, I'll take some BATing time for that. Great work everyone!
