  1. The idea's not mine, I took it from another website but I thought it interesting to have your point of view and examples from all over the world of obvious bitter unfriendly rivalries between cities (neighboring or not). A few cases from my country, France: Paris vs Marseille (the arrogant capital city vs the rebellious mediterranean second largest French city) Lyon vs Saint-Etienne Nantes vs Rennes (both claiming the title of Brittany's capital city) Rouen & Le Havre vs Caen (Northern Normandy vs Southern Normandy) Metz vs Nancy (Northern German-like Lorraine vs Southern Lorraine) Bordeaux vs Toulouse (both cities think they're south-western France's one and only metropolis)
  2. I don't think anyone has come up with such a topic yet, so here it is Let's inaugurate it with toll plazas located in the Paris region. Most highways are toll free and major toll plazas are some 40-50-60 kms from downtown Paris on major turnpikes connecting Paris with other major French cities 1st is the Montesson toll plaza on the A14 tollway (La Défense - Orgeval) " ne peut
  3. Recreation: RUHRGEBIET by EJC

Nice to see EJC's back with this Ruhrgebiet CJ. Unfortunately, I guess the Paris CJ is over... unless I missed sth. Just to help, here are a few pix of the SIgnal Iduna Park (ex-Westfalenstadion) in Dortmund and the Veltins Arena (ex-Arena auf Schalke) in Gelsenkirchen. Both stadiums hosted WC'06 games Signal Iduna Park (82,000 Bundesliga games, 65,000 Int'l games), home of the Borussia Dortmund (1997 Champions League winners) Veltins Arena (60,000 Bundesliga games, 52,000 Int'l games), home of the FC Schalke 04

Basically anywhere between Barcelona, Spain to Monaco (inbetween the French and Italian boarder) is a paradice of warm weather with an awsome landscape of grasslands surrounded by rolling hills. Also, many of the cities in this area have class and a rich history, especially Nice, France. Believe it or not, but this area has the same latitude as southwestern Ontario, Canada, where the temp. can dip below -20 degerees in the winter. The good old Mediterranean sea keeps this area warm so palm trees grow and the weather is great all year round. Heres a pic of the Cote' Dajaur (gold coast) of Nice, France quote> Cote' Dajaur???????? Never heard about it. You probably mean COTE D'AZUR (Côte d'Azur) which doesn't mean Gold Coast (Côte d'Or in French) but Azure Coast (for those who may not know, azure is a kind of blue See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azure_%28color%29
  5. Show us your area's highways

My home is in Vincennes, east of Paris (see the blue circle centered on my home.) It is circled by four freeways : boulevard périphérique or BP (inner Paris beltway), A3, A4, and A86 (another beltway)

  8. Show us your area's highways

As far as I'm concerned, I think the debate over which country has the best freeways/motorways/expressways/tollways/turnpikes or whatever you call them is useless. As a French citizen, I admit French autoroutes are, for the most part of them, amazing and it's pure pleasure driving them. It is true though that freeways in the Paris metro are poorly maintained and designed although the emphasis has been put on that for more than a decade. In any event, for those complaining that there are no freeways crossing downtown historical Paris, all that I can say is "Would you like a double decker or sunken freeway to be built right next Notre-Dame or to cross the Champs-Elys

  10. The broadest road and highway?

In France, the broadest freeway portion is the 12-lane A6 running through suburbs south of Paris (from Arcueil to Wissous) on approximately 7 kms. At some points, it even briefly turns into a 13-14 lane freeway. I don't know whether it's the widest in Europe or not. I think its a tarrific idea that other cities should follow. But as Spa mentioned, money is a problem. Biuld big or don't biuld at all I say. 14. Highway Planning and Architecture

Some freeway pix in the Paris metropolitan area On the last one, you may notice the sign on the left that says Stade de France. Charles de Gaulle is... our former president... but also the biggest Paris airport some 20-25 kms north of inner Paris, the famous CDG for those who're used to flying to France. In France, we rather call it Roissy from the name of the suburban town it was built right next to.

  16. Dome Des Invalides

Nice job Frogface, you just forgot to mention in your description that it's right underneath the dome that the remains of Napoleon (ashes actually) were put in 1840 in a sumptuous tomb seen by thousands of tourists every year.
