That'll be because Chrome had cached the DNS lookup, whereas with IE it was a fresh visit, so no caching.

It's just the domain that's expired, so you can still access the site if you know the IP. If you add the following lines to your hosts file (On Windows - c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) then restart your browser, the site will be accessible. 142.4.14.20 sc4devotion.com 142.4.14.20 www.sc4devotion.com Remember to remove them once the domain is restored though.

Does anyone know what the pros and cons are of compressing textures? Presumably there must have been a discussion about this somewhere but google doesn't seem to find one. Obviously uncompressed textures look better and compressed ones are smaller, but beyond that is there any difference? Does it affect performance, or does the game require compression for certain types of texture?

goopie - The game loads the plugins in alphabetical order. This patch modifies the NAM roundabouts, so it has to be loaded after the NAM. - - I'm assuming you do have the NAM installed? - You can just drag the z_roundaboutfix folder from the zip file into the plugin directory and that should work fine.

Ok how about this?

Hawkeye9 - Nice suburban image. Very realistic. -1 point for leaving the minimise icon in the bottom left though. So overall 8/10. art128 - Great Eastern European style image. I like the under-bridge path. I don't like the wall-to-wall building in the centre though. It doesn't seem to fit very well with the buildings on either side. Also, the lens-flare looks unrealistic, so it detracts from the image. Overall 8/10.

Monorail is faster than the other types of rail. (in the default settings, not sure about Z) It's supposed to appeal to the wealthier sims too, but I'm not certain this actually makes a difference in the game.

simmars-forum-threads Nuclear Power plant vs fusion power plant
vershner replied to gamenomad's topic in General Off-Topic
Originally posted by: Patricius Maximus Not too sure about that. What about present-day fusion bombs? They are simply an uncontrolled fusion reaction. If a fusion plant "melts down", wouldn't it produce the same thing? quote> No, a fusion plant cannot melt down. The reaction is sustained by the heat of the lasers and the compression from the magnetic field. The instant that these stop the nuclear reaction would stop and you would just get a normal explosion caused by the hot, compressed gas expanding and burning, similar to what you'd get if a gas plant blew up. There would be some release of radiation, but much less than with a fission plant meltdown. -
Elevated Network Props for station making
vershner replied to Xyloxadoria's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Isn't the whole point of these that they don't get rendered with the station? That way any change made to the track will always be reflected in the stations and they should always match. -
High Speed Rail vs. Bullet Train
vershner replied to Retep Molinari's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Originally posted by: cirvianum I think it would be good thing to make the HSR tracks look like an ordinary rail track, cuz real-life High speed trains use similar networks to the common trains... BTW those messages use HTML so I can HTML a pic here? quote> We're currently working on that... -
Originally posted by: earwax_man Are there dependencies for this Mod; because whenever I install it, all I get are mulricoloured tram shapes quote> No dependencies, but you have to run the game in hardware rendering mode for the skins to show properly.

Back in the early 90s, I had an Amiga which wasn't powerful enough to run sc2000. So, being about 13 at the time, I thought I would just write my own version. Needless to say, I didn't get very far, but I did manage to make something. You could plop buildings down and make a city, but there was no simulation behind it, just static graphics.

May I have a range please.

The Capital of the World!
vershner replied to spacenuteskimo's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Without some explanation of those headings the table isn't much use. What does 'Human Capital' and 'Information Exchange' mean in that context? None of the top 6 have a realistic chance of becoming the world capital though because there would never be agreement on those cities. Russia and China would never accept a US city. Europe would not accept London. Britain would not accept Paris. China would not accept Tokyo. Why is Geneva not on the list? Surely that would rank in the top 10 for business activity and political involvement? -
Does the new "Star Trek" movie mess up San Francisco?
vershner replied to diamonddog_74's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
This is nothing new. Star-Trek has never paid any attention to detail or realism whatsoever. It's just low-brow sci-fi for the mainstream. -
It's an interesting article. His 8-point plan for rescuing Michigan is too generalised and offers no specific suggestions, but the plan for the auto industry is clearer. He makes an interesting point about tourism. I'm from the UK, the only thing I know about Michigan is Detroit and the auto-industry. I've never considered it as a tourist destination, and I don't know anyone who's been there. Is it a realistic idea? Could it genuinely be a tourist destination? As for Detroit, I don't think it should try and model itself on London. London is a capital and has a history, reputation, and diversity behind it that Detroit isn't going to build in the foreseeable future. I think Manchester might be a better city to try and emulate. Manchester was a key city in the industrial revolution, but like Detroit, it struggled after the industry declined. Up until the 1980s was it seen as a depressing, run-down place full of crime and pollution. Nowadays, thanks to urban renewal; a shift to service, high-tech and creative industry; a cultural explosion in art and music; and sporting success; it's the fastest growing city in the UK and the third most visited.

The parking sign is a good addition, and the other lighting is working well, but please take out the neon on the central pillar. It looks very unrealistic. You're in danger of including something because it's new and cool, rather than because the model actually requires it. You might find neon like that on a car-park attached to a hotel or a cinema, but never one next to a station, airport, government building, or an office block.
-
I'm not keen on the neon in that BAT. I'm sure it will look great on others, like hotels and shops, but it looks out-of-place on a car-park.
