hi, when it comes to grids I think it's just a matter of personal taste of the designers, not if it was very usefull or not. for example take Amsterdam, in Amsterdam are many channels laid in a "cirkel" around the city center. as you can see on this image http://cf.uba.uva.nl/nl/collecties/kaarten/image/img0050.gif Amsterdam already had grids in 1655. so in my opinion grids are very standard and boring indeed if you put them in one straight line, however like my cities they have grids in a lot of different shapes and directions. so, grids aren't ugly it's the way you put them
