Building Log: World Trade Center (Pre-9/11)
DoubleJ2K replied to rubik3's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
I don't believe the project is dead. Rubik has been very busy in real life and he and the BSC have been working to get the Petronas Project out the door, or that's at least what I last read on the Petronas thread. I'm sure everyone knows what happens when you assume...so quit jumping to conclusions. -

Well, I finally broke down and started trying to learn gmax and the BAT. Having grown up in Southern California, this is a building which I'm both familiar with and very fond of. I've wanted to see this building in SimCity ever since the early days of SC3K when for some reason, Maxis had it as an icon on their website but we never got it in the game. Unless it was hiding from me, in which case I might have to take a break from SC4 and pick up SC3K again https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif' border='0> Anyhow, here is a pic of my progress so far. Please keep in mind that this is my VERY FIRST attempt at creating a building and all of the progress I've made thus far is the result of stumbling through gmax by myself. Comments, criticisms, and help would all be appreciated. I'm especially going to need help on the gate around the building and the parabolic arches which support it. Many thanks, Double J

WOWIE! I think there have been a couple of attempts to do the Pentagon, but this is the closest I've seen it come. If anyone can do it, it's Oppie. I live in the DC Metro area and drive by the Pentagon all the time, so it'll be great to see it in my SimCity as well, not too far off from Rubik's WTC complex!

Hey Goob, I just wanted to say how AWESOME your new version of Toys 'R' Us looks! I absolutely love the old style building and can totally remember shopping at a few of them when I was growing up. It made me start thinking a bit about growing up and I was wondering if you might consider doing a Bob's Big Boy Restaurant as one of your next projects. They used to be all over the place when I was growing up in So. Cal. and now they've all but disappeared.

Hey Goob, I apologize if this isn't posted where it should be, but I just finished watching the 10th Anniversary edition of Clerks and I was wondering if you'd consider doing the QuickStop grocery and RST video.

Date: 10/6/2004 1:39:14 AM Author: rubik3 'Odd question, but what is wrong with the one that is on the STEX?' If you are refering to the other Seven World Trade by NintendoMaster then I'll have to plead the fifth . I don't like downplaying other people's efforts so I'll just say that it's not quite up to my extreme attention to detail. Also everyone has a different style to their buildings, even if it's a real life replica, and I felt that I needed to complete the complex with a version in my own style. I agree with you Dev that Nintendo's version was good, but just take a look at it compared to Rubik's. Even without Rubik's extreme attention to detail, you can see that Nintendo's version doesn't quite fit with the rest of Rubik's complex. I, for one, am glad that Rubik decided to do the entire complex and look forward to the release of Seven. -
It has been a while since I've posted a request here, but with Rubik's World Trade Center Complex almost completed, and with the number of FrankenTower requests I've seen made (the rest of my feelings toward the LMDC, Libeskind and his glass shard towers will remain unspoken,) I would like to request that someone take on the challenge of creating (from what I've seen so far) the ONLY viable option to rebuilding the WTC site. Building Log: World Trade Center (Pre-9/11)

I going to assume (even though I shouldn't, because everyone knows what happens when you assume) that dev's comment was directed at me. Perhaps I should have phrased my post a little better. I meant that Rubik had to take some liberties with the creation of the base of the WTC complex in order to make it work for SC4. In real life, about half of the complex was at ground level. Rubik had to change it and put everything on an elevated base since SC4 will not let you do that. -

7WTC is looking great, Rubik. I'm just curious what your plans are to connect it to the rest of the WTC lot. I know you had to take some liberties with the base to make it all work for SC4. -

Awesome, Rubik. Not only is it great that the release coincides with September 11, but it also makes a great present to celebrate my first year here at Simtropolis. People like you and buildings like these really make me appreciate this community and the game a whole lot more. Thanks again! -

Rubik, I actually had a couple of suggestions for you. I was playing SC4 the other night and I queried one of the buildings (SimGoober's Toys 'R' Us) and along with his great custom query, he had the audio from one of their old commercials (I don't want to grow up, I'm a Toys 'R' Us kid, there's a million toys at Toys 'R' Us that I can play with!) playing in the background. I don't know what your plans for the query on the WTC were, but I thought it would be great if you could incorporate something like that. For the music, I was thinking about a clip from Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man. I happened to be watching one of my DVD's on 9/11 the other night (I don't remember which one) and that was playing for the end credits. It set the mood perfectly, and I think it would be a great addition to an already awesome creation. Just my $0.02 -

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/25.gif width=15> Oh... my... God... That is amazing, Rubik. You should be ready to take your place in the BAT Hall of Fame for this project. And BTW for everyone else, 7WTC IS available on the STEX, but it was not modelled by Rubik. -

I'm going to have to go with the brighter one as well, Rubik. -

While I can appreciate the symbolism of releasing it on 9/11/04, I don't think I can wait that long unless it's really needed to finish the lot. -

First voog, please don't bump your posts. Second, if I remember correctly, Rubik was not going to do 7WTC. It was part of the WTC in name, but it was actually located across the street from the WTC superblock. I know that kid_a had plans to do it, but there were a couple of other things he wanted to finish first. Rubik has done an amazing job on Bldgs. 1-6 and I don't think it's fair to push him, especially when he's working so hard just to get this part of the project done.
