The Early Days
Deschutes County is a collection of small to mid-size towns in the heart of a Pacific Northwest state. With the Deschutes River cutting it in half, most of the larger cities dot the shores. While the outer lying areas are home to a smaller population of rural farmers.
On October 15th, 1887, the first settlers arrived from the Eastern cities to start a new life in what seemed like a whole seperate world.
Led by Boston native, Thomas Betterfeld, his group landed on what is today, the City of Betterfeld. During settlement, the village was attacked by a tribe of Nez Perce indians, which resulted in the death of the unofficial mayor, Thomas.
In his memory, the people named their village "Betterfeld" in memory of the man that helped them create their new lives..
