Driving Across Eastern Europe
In today's update, we'll be taking another trip to Europe with a road trip across the eastern part of the continent - stretching from the Russian capital of Moscow to Poland's capital city of Warsaw. We'll be visiting a few of the region's most noteworthy sights and landscapes - and traveling through some of the continent's most important agricultural regions and farmlands.
Let's begin our journey by landing in Moscow's Domodedovo Airport - one of the region's busiest. It's a rainy, dreary day - and it'll continue to pour down throughout the day as we take a quick look at Russia's iconic capital city.
While much of Moscow's city center is filled with unique historical architecture - the districts surrounding the center and along the city's various ring roads are dominated by
brutalist commieblocks and repetitive apartments. Here we see a typical scene showing some typical buildings and apartments of the era.
We embark from Moscow and drive through rural Russia for a few days, taking in the sights of the countryside - and not all of them are exactly idyllic. Huge, heavily polluting
factories and power plants dot the landscape - seen here as the temperatures begin to drop amidst a huge snowstorm.
We've emerged from the wintry conditions, and finally arrive near the country's rural border crossing with Latvia, taking a few days to stop by at a number of small villages and towns along the way. We've crossed Gaizinkalns Hill, the country's highest point along our journey - but with a height of only 1,024 feet, you'd probably never even recognize it if not for a few signs and markers on the side of the road.
Our road trip continues on as we travel through the rural Lithuania/Belarus border, where quaint villages and sprawling farmland can be seen for miles around. The Great European Plain and vast ancient forests once completely covered this region - but today, only small pockets of undisturbed wilderness remain.
We continue our journey through rural Belarus, driving past Dzyarzhynskaya Hill - the country's highest point. Standing 1,135 feet high, it's marked by a small monument and named after Felix Dzerzhinsky, the former founder of the KGB - a reminder of the country's past as a republic in the USSR.
We continue our trip south through the middle of the night, traveling past countless quaint villages and rural farmland.
Here we see another typical scene from rural Eastern Europe - a small single family farmhouse surrounded by a few overgrown wheat fields and a beautiful natural backdrop.
For the next couple of sights, we'll be viewing these agricultural landscapes from high above to really get a grasp of their vast scale. From rural Poland to northern Belarus,
neatly kept farming plots and charming villages dot the landscape for as far as the eye can see.
We've reached our final destination of Warsaw - the iconic capital city of Poland. Many of the city's famous avenues are surrounded by beautiful historical architecture, like on Aleje Ujazdowskie.
We'll conclude with a look over Warsaw at nighttime - a truly amazing sight, especially when the iconic Palace of Science and Culture is fully illuminated.
