Thailand
Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand and formerly known as Siam, is a country of 70 million in Southeast Asia. It's known for tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha. In Bangkok, the capital, an ultramodern cityscape rises next to the iconic temples of Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the Emerald Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Kaew). The entire country is also known for its many beach resorts along its Indian Ocean and Gulf of Thailand waterfronts, and the city of Phuket is one of Southeast Asia's most iconic tourist destinations. Let's take a trip to this beautiful country in today's update and visit some of Thailand's most stunning sights.
Thailand's capital city and largest city is the sprawling metropolis of Bangkok, home to some 15 million people in its metropolitan area. The city's dense central core along the Chao Phraya River can be seen below - its filled with modern highrises and apartment buildings for as far as the eye can see.
Bangkok is also well known for its many opulent palaces and temples. The famed Grand Palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1782 - and the king, his court, and his royal government were based on the grounds of the palace until 1925. Today, it's one of the city's busiest and most popular destinations for locals and tourists alike.
In addition to its modern cities, Thailand is also known for its beautiful shorelines. After exploring Bangkok, we head south towards Phuket - a city that's home to some of the region's most popular tourist resorts and most beautiful beaches.
The waters surrounding Phuket are also home to countless limestone karst cliffs that dramatically tower above the surrounding inlets. Perhaps the most famous example is Khao Phing Kan, which gained international attention for its featuring in the 1974 James Bond movie, The Man With The Golden Gun.
After spending a few days on the beach, we head back north towards the heart of Thailand to explore another one of the country's major cities - Nakhon Ratchasima. The city's dense, crowded center is filled with bustling street markets, antique stalls, food stands, and much more that you won't want to miss.
As with many other countries across Southeast Asia, agriculture plays a huge role in rural Thailand. Rice paddies and small villages dot the landscape for hundreds of miles around in the country's interior and along it's shoreline.
Our journey ends with one of the country's most famed structures, the ruins of Wat Phra Si Sanphet. These ruins were the holiest temple on the site of the old Royal Palace in Thailand's ancient capital of Ayutthaya until the city was completely destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. It was the grandest and most beautiful temple in the capital and it served as a model for the new Wat Phra Kaew in the country's current capital city of Bangkok. Today, they're a can't miss destination and one of the country's most impressive sights.
