Washington, DC destroyed in terrorist attack
On September 23, 2017, a terrorist detonated a suitcase nuclear bomb in Washington, DC. Aside from the massive casualties, the city will be uninhabitable for generations.
New capital city location settled
After months of political negotiations, the location of the new U.S. capital city has been officially announced by President Trump (who was in Florida at the time of the DC attack). There were many offers from various cities and states throughout the country, but the sparsely populated area along the Missouri River between St. Joseph, Missouri and Lincoln, Nebraska was the winner. This region was chosen for a number of reasons:
- Geographically central to the country
- Land coming from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas
- A large area of fertile, sturdy land (over 5,000 square miles) with few inhabitants (less than 100,000 people)
New Washington City Council structure announced
The new Federal District will be governed by a 10 person city council with each member coming from a specific ward. The mayor is elected from at-large from all wards and serves as a voting Chairman of the City Council. All elected officials serve 2 year terms without term limits. The first official election is scheduled for 2020. In the meantime, the Governors of the respective states are asked to each appoint 1 person to a Planning Council that will meet until after the 2020 election.
