Otahuhu A - It's a Gas! 06/27/2007
I have now done some research on the RL Otahuhu power stations.... I actually drive right past them every day on the motorway when I go to work.
Otahuhu A - Gas Turbine

The first four units of Otahuhu A were commissioned in 1968. It was the first large gas turbine power station in Australasia. Two of the three available units are currently operated to provide 'reactive power' for the electricity transmission system. This provides stability to the electrical system and helps minimise electricity transmission losses.
The Otahahu B – Combined Cycle

The Otahuhu B, power station was commissioned in December 1999. This 380 megawatt power station is the largest of its kind in New Zealand and one of the most efficient in the world. The combined cycle technology produces significantly more electricity from the same amount of gas than conventional single cycle plants by using the ‘waste’ heat from the first power generator (a gas turbine) to drive a second generator, a steam turbine engine, to both produce power. As a result the station releases less CO2 per GWh than stations of lower efficiency and the construction of the power station within the Auckland urban area resulted in significant savings in the amount of energy lost through transmission.
Viralenemy: Thanks again for stopping by, I am enjoying using Cycledog's trees - hope to post some pictures showing them soon.
wgb24: Yep I am trying hard to listen to everyones suggestions and learn a bit more in the process.
I have now got a bigger better hospital that surprisingly looks a little similar to Auckland City Hospital... This one is about 4 times the footprint of the large Maxis one!
Will post a picture next update. Looks great with the night lights...
Did I mention having fun?
Here are some pictures of Auckland - I have posted them before in Jacky's Kabin but will post them again here.

Cellphone shot from the hospital lunch room window.

Auckland skyline - the Vero tower to the left of the Sky Tower and the next tallest building to the right, with the dome on the top is the Coopers and Lybrand Building. The dome is lit with multiple lights at night.

Some night shots...

The wires on the left are for the "Sky Jump" a controlled free fall by wire to the ground... Takers anyone?
The next two shots are of Rangitoto Island our newest volcanic cone at a mere 500 years old.

And my personal favourite... to acknowledge my aspirations for a space port in one of my cities...
