Spider-hunting nudist ends with ring of fire

Apr 3, 11:05 AM (ET)

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A red-faced Australian nudist who tried to set fire to what he thought was a deadly funnel web spider's nest ended up with badly burned buttocks, emergency officials said Monday.

The 56-year-old man was at a nudist colony near Bowral, about 60 miles southwest of Sydney, Sunday when he spotted what he believed to be a funnel web spider hole.

Ambulance workers, including a helicopter crew, were called to the scene after the man poured petrol down the hole and then lit a match in an attempt to kill the offending arachnid.

"The exploding gasoline fumes left the man with burns to 18 percent of his body, on the upper leg and buttocks," the NRMA Careflight helicopter rescue service said in a statement.

It said the man's lack of clothing probably contributed to the extent of his burns.

"The fate of the bunkered spider was unknown, although other guests at the resort thought it was probably a harmless trapdoor spider and not a deadly funnel web," the statement said.

NRMA Careflight said it was called to a property in the same area in January when another man kicked a spider that was crawling up the wall of a friend's cabin. The man broke his leg in two places, it said.

Talk about your flaming idiot 5.gif, I guess the bug bomb was to easy.

Then, just how hard do you need to kick a spider?

SCORE:

Spiders   2

The fact that he was naked made me think that it served him right for streaking in public. I think spiders are just innocent arachnids.

^^^no, see, the argument here was that he thought the spider was one which was potentially deadly to humans. Since it was near a resort, he naturally wanted to get rid of it.

Though, hell, given the chance I would probably do that even if the spider was harmless. Flames are fun.11.gif Too bad this wasn't caught on tape....21.gif

Poor guy gets burned and you two make fun of him.  And Duke wants it on tape.  Okay, okay, I admit that the visual image in my mind from the news story is pretty funny but some people say I have a sick sense of humor sometimes. 10.gif

"Will someone please think of the arachnids!"

If you want to read about people killing or injuring themselves doing very stupid things, I would recommend the Darwin Awards books.

I wouldn't quite say that actually. It is possible to safely play with fire (pyrotechnics displays, anyone?) as long as you take proper precautions and don't do anything stupid.

Of course, your parents will never tell you that.2.gif

And in all honesty, if you're under 18, it probably isn't a good idea, simply because you may be doing someting unsafe without realizing it.

But, as an adult or with adult supervision, fire can most certainly be a toy if you wish to use it as one. Just make sure you have a fire extinguisher and/or the backyard hose (depends on what's burning) ready in case something goes wrong. And don't attempt to perform your show near anythng too flammable. In the middle of a paved driveway is best (asphalt doesn't burn, neither does concrete), but if you'e only planning on doing some minor combustion, in the middle of your backyard off the ground (like on a pile of rocks) with the grass plenty wet down with the hose beforehand will do.

Of course, if you have a barbecue pit, use that.

And never attempt any experimantation inside (even in a fireplace), since outside is as well ventilated as you can get, and you don't want any dangerous soots building up in your chimney.

I've categorized some things here:

Category I: Things which can safely be burned in a fireplace:

-paper

-wood

-that's about it.

Category II: Things which can safely be burned outside with stated precautions:

-alumimnum (yes, it'll burn if you get the fire hot enough first)

-plastic, in small amounts at a time (outside, the normally noxious fumes aren't  an issue as long as you don't overdo it)

-anyhting you can eat will burn. Foods high in fat burn best. Chocolate burns  slowly and sizzles. Oreos have the cream sizzle and dribble about, while the chocolate halves burn slower, and eventually just shrivel up. Experiment.

-old furniture

-old clothes that aren't too lightweight (anyhting that will blow away in the wind is a no)

-tires and anything else made of rubber

Catehgory III: Things which can be burned, but must be thrown onto the fire from a safe distance, with something ready for everyone to immediately duck behind:

-small batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, hearing aid, digita camera, cell phone, etc.- NOT car batteries). They explode.

-water balloons filled with gasoline. Again, "boom".

-fireworks

-unopened aluminum cans or plastic bottles. The contents will boil and cause the container to pop. Don't try this with glass bottles since you'll send shards of glass flying all over the place.

-aerosol cans. They explode quite forcefully since they contain flammable contents under pressure.  Note that a used can will have almost no effect, while a fresh one will explode like hell.

Category X: Things to avoid burning altogether:

-electronics. Silicon makes highly toxic smoke which is dangerous even in the most well ventilated conditions.

-leaves. They potentially get caught on an updraft and may land elsewhere (like on the roof of your house) while still on fire.

-anything still alive. Insects, small animals, etc. While the prospect may seem fun, the fire won't kill them immediately, and as no one ever taught a squirrel to stop drop and roll, they'll run off and likely set other stuff in their path on fire as they do so (the aforementioned spider was an exception since it was at the bottom of a hole and considering the gasoline used, it would certainly die before being able to make it out of the hole). Feel free to burn as many dead animals as you want, though.

And above all, make sure you're doing this on your own property

And somewhere in that list, you will find the story of a guy who was cleaning cobwebs out of his house with a blowtorch and ended up burning his house down in the process.

As for this guy, well that is the stuff Darwin Awards are made of.19.gif

@Duke87: I bet your an interesting neighbor  18.gif , no offense intended.

    organicsabre's is 100% spot on,

"Wrong, they aint, they are dangerous and you should never play with fire or matches.

Please note there are some quite young members on this forum, please watch what you say as comments can cause consequences."  can not be said enough. Not all on this forum are as smart and as cautious as you are. I doubt that you or anyone else would want some kid or adult (as age is no measure of intellect) to get injured because of something you post here.

I also think that it is probably against the law to burn anything outdoors (in populated areas at least) more flammable than charcoal for the grill.

The man in the article proves my point about "(as age is no measure of intellect)".

DuskTrooper: "Imbecile. Never attempt to assult an arachnid unclothed. " truer word were never spoken 17.gif especially when fire is involved. Hahahahahahaha I know I have to many body parts I don't want biten and/or burned.

SamFlash: "Poor guy gets burned and you two make fun of him." Yup, I bet he has heard it already and I doubt that he tries that again, or so I hope, Hahahhahaha

As far as" And Duke wants it on tape."  9.gif I agree, I find it hard to believe I just said that, but to be honest I do. I think a good dose of embarrassment is a great teacher. Do I have sympathy for him?  Sure.  Do I have compassion for him? Not really, I think it was Forrest Gump who said "stupid is as stupid does" or to that effect.

Here is some info on the beast (the spider).

Thankyou skin, as you note by my avatar I am one of many who have to deal ith the consequences of kids+matches etc. and i have had my fair share of tragic attendances. i speak with good authority on this, and if my fire safety message helps just one person its worth it.

    quote>

Again i must flame you for this (no pun intended)

You should never play with fire anywhere.

Your category 1 fires as you call it.  in the summer especially, we have attended many bonfire started with paper and wood that have been left unattended and have set fire to sheds, fences and even houses.

Your category II as with all metals when they reach a certain temperature they melt, one question if it starts going out of control, how do you put it out, you can't use water or standard household kitchen foam extinguisher, both will just evapourate and you end up calling us to but 40bars of pressured water on to it to knock the flames down and cool it for an hour.

Plastic is poisonous when burnt and you can easily get overcome, why do you think we wear air sets?

Your category III is even worse batteries explode and when they explode they can send bits of their cases flying everywhere, would you like a bit of metal projectile stuck in you?

A large factory fire was started in lincoln by an aerosol can from a bonfire bordering the site, it exploded like a rocket and went through a window of a plastics factory.  It required 30 fire appliances and over 200 firefighters to put it out over a 48 hour period, see picture below.

    Plastics factory fire

as for the last paragraph need I say more.

I think you should talk to your local fire department and enrole yourself on a fire awareness course.  what you have described horrified me as a firefighter who has to pull dead bodies out of places caused by people who do this.  Please no more on your pyromanic ideas.

@organicsabre:  Good on you!  When I read this thread I was absolutely horrified.  In my lifetime I have lost several friends to fire, one when I was 5 years old.  Kids that age hardly remember things, but my mother made me understand that my friend was playing with matches.

    God bless all firefighters.

Amen to that, but back on topic here... well... back to the spiders...

Such a spider is 7cm long and can kill the average child in 15 minutes, so the naked man had a good intention, even if he was naked...

Shame about the lack of ideas though... Petrol-accelerated Fire?

Lawn Chair Larry is hilarious. He didn't die, but it was an amazing feat no doubt about it!

Death is nothing to laugh at, but some of these stories show that the power of human stupidity is something to be fearful of.

Fires are only 40% of our job, think rescue from any space, Road traffic accidents, flooding, fire prevention, animal rescue, Terroist atatcks (were normally running towards the attack not away like you would be)

Before you post more comments on this, please think about what you are saying.

As for your last sentance, people read alot of things on this forum, and some may take what people say to be right, I am just making sure people realise that your comments are not right and rectify the situation in an adult and correct way.

Easy Bakes: They've always done that. As long as they can't reproduce after the incident will it be counted as a Darwin award. Most injuries are honourable mentions.

If they went by that rule, there wouldn't be nearly as many stupid stories.

Anyways, yes, fires are not a funny thing when they risk innocent people. Its also the most painful death for a person.

You sound like my dad. He was a firefighter too. He never let us play with firecrackers...eh.

Still though, yeah, dont try this one at home kids. If you feel like doing something retarded watch a video of some other fool doing it on google videos instead. You get the same laughs without the same burns.

Can you believe some moron built a freakin home made flamethrower that used alcohol, then tested it inside his garage.... that man sure was s-m-r-t

EDIT by me: err, judging by the lack of common sense of people on the internet, maybe i shouldnt tell you guys about how we did that one....

yes we are all like that, but when you see the "aftermath" of people who do play with fire, you kind of sympathise with us and why we are like this.
