I am seriously considering geting an Intel compatible LIVE CD version of Linux, preferably with a fair ammount of content (aka not ultra minimalist or distros focusing on one thing) I also have a DVD burner, and was wondering if there were any distros made to take advantage of a DVD's space. Also, it has to be compatible with my system, here are my specs:

Intel Pentium D 3.0ghz

1gb RAM

Nvidia 6800

250gb Hard Drive

DVD ROM

DVD R/RW

I am pretty much a novice, so I just thought I would come here for some advice

Thanks!

Tim, linux is compatitable with ANY, really ANY kind of hardware ;-)

So that won't be a problem.

I strongly recomend Ubuntu Linux. It is one of the most user-friendly, easy-to-use distros around. Also, Ubuntu has the largest community in the entire linux world (www.ubuntuforums.org). This community is waaay larger than Simtropolis 3.gif

Also, you can order as many CDs of it as you want, I recently orderd 50, for free. These CDs come with a live-version, so you can try it out, and an installation disc, so you can install ubuntu.

Also, the content of the distro doesn't depend on the distro you're using, but the window manager that comes with it. A window manager is, like the name applies, a program that makes windows for you, so you wont have to use code and command lines to get things done. The most known window managers are Gnome and KDE - Ubuntu comes with gnome.

Up to that, with Ubuntu, you can download and install any program you wish by entering a simple code in a command line, or by starting up the installation manager. It's like two clicks to download and install, for example, a video-editing program.

About the DVD-playability: Linux doesn't have this ability by default, because licenses prohibit it to do so. However, with two clicks you can simply install DVD-playability at Ubuntu, which is fairly easy and totally legal ofcourse.

So I seriously recommend Ubuntu for you!

Oh, by the way... even simcity 4 runs flawlessly at ubuntu 2.gif

Well, I downloaded Ubuntu, but am having trouble booting from the CD I made. I copied everything in the .zip and burned it to disk, but when I try to boot from the disk, it say it cannot boot. Any suggestions?

It's packaged as an ISO: therefore, you need a burning program that can handle those (I use deepburner, which is free). An ISO is basically an exact image of a CD, so don't decompress it! Simply use the ISO burning facility in whatever burning software you are using. Ubuntu, is a great distro, and I would recomend it too.

Linux is an excellent software, if you know how to use it! And yes, Ubuntu is great!

Well, people praise Debian, although I think that the newest Fedora Core would be your best bet (It is a version of Red Hat.)

There is something called 'Yoper' which is a gaming variant of linux that is A-Ok as well.

Knoppix is the one i've played with before. Its a live cd. It can come in handy if windows dies on you and you want to rescue some of your data before you wipe your disk. Really any live cd including a bootable ubuntu would be fine too for that of course.
