I'm not sure if anyone has ever head of this but I just discovered it and I was shocked at how increaqdably awsome it was. The Historic American Buildings Survey was a program started under the New Deal back in the 30's to document America's significant buildings and structures. What the program entailed was essentially groups of young architects roving the country witrh pen, pensil, paper, and camera to document buildings from Philly to LA. What's so great you ask? They put it on-line! That's whats so great. On-line at :HABS you simply enter the name of a building, city, or Architect and push go, and more than likely they'll have something there. Almost all of the entries have photos and a good number have actual drawings like these: 116511923_a4662814e3.jpg116511922_c5511fa31b.jpg116511920_64989694a3.jpg116511918_4a26102710.jpg116511916_f2331469fe.jpg116511915_d4772477ee.jpg116514711_52bb30a584.jpg116514710_c3177eda0b.jpg116514708_d4fdc9f0e4.jpg116514707_c3d2c411ce.jpg116514705_ffda2fdb04.jpg116514704_b07ad9aa5a.jpg These images are about 1/4 of what you will find on the site. I have taken at least 60 images off this website for my own private use, the only drawback is that it's rather difficult to get the pictures on your computer. For some reason I'll never know the government in al its infinate wisdom resolved to place the pictures on-line as quicktime files, makeing it impossiable to simply right click and save the image. To the get the pictures you must acctually take a picture of the screen by pressing PrtSc (SysRq), paste that into Powerpoint, save it as a picture, and then you can crop it and get rid of the extra stuff from the screen. Involved, but worth it. In any event, I hope that everyone finds this useful and that we may soon start to see some buildings inspired by this fantastic resource. (also the first 6 are theaters, anyone who feels that the exchange in in desperate need of some more like me, they are the paramount theater, the national thater, the Merced thater(2), the garden theater, and the chicago theater-the chicago is esspecially cool)

I love digging up old history! Fantastic find you have there...

I collect old atlas books... I have a 1942, 1937, 1916, 1889, and 1900 atlas book. They are so interesting to look at! Especially the 1889 atlas... there are still parts of Anartica, South America, and Africe undiscovered!!

That was my hope, that some of these images would inspire people. Speaking of which I think I may just take the Bull by the horns and turn this into a theater project thread with its goal being the creation of five new theater lots for the exchange. Anyone intrested?

Just send a PM to someone like simgoober or Jason and see what they will do. If you're not sure what to do, I'll contact them for you. I'm sure they'll love the challenge! 29.gif

Nifty website.  I spent a few minutes browsing and got a few ideas.  Nothing will happen soon, if at all.  My time for Batting is almost non-existant these days.  I am working on a hotel, but it's not even a 1/3 done, and I started it a week or so ago....

Wrong, HABS is the unofficial nickname for the Montreal Canadians Hockey Team! Go Habs Go! Am I the only Montrealer?

That is a cool site! if anything it will make it much easier to BAT old buildings, considering just eyeing all the little architectural details can be very overwhelming at least for, with this it will be a whole lot easier to make old buildings im guessing(Im not really at BATter.)

    Irishgrapes,

Thank you soooooooo much for posting this.  I have been collecting this kind of information by hand through an endless string of library books, and to find so much readily available online is simply a godsend!
