After seeing these innovative and realistic buildings for release and in city journals, I felt compelled to launch a topic on split buildings.  I use the term to refer to buildings that develop on opposing sides of a transit conduit, such as a highway or avenue.  Some excellent split buildings I've encountered include:

  • pegasus' Charas BT Records
  • citynut's Newman Inc Memorial Hospital II , used very nicely in Darmok's Anduin Valley Revisited

My goal in creating this topic is to build a centralized collection of links to split buildings on the STEX and elsewhere, enabling city builders to search the forums and find a comprehensive source for this type of building; and also to encourage the use of technology that enables this building design.

That said, feel free to post examples of edifices that span roads, avenues, highways, and the like. 48.gif

Update:

Visit this thread to:

  • learn about the two classes of split building
  • read information crucial to new content developers creating split building content (BAT's, lots, related textures, props, etc.)
  • learn about the Split Buildings Initiative, or SBI
  • follow SBI administrative entries that may be posted by any SBI supporter
  • access SBI multimedia
  • read community feedback and relaxed posts from developers and other interested parties

Then:

  • post ideas, photos, and links to photo galleries to the Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas thread
  • post links to existing split building content on the STEX and announcements of new split building content (BAT's, lots, related textures, props, etc.) to the Split Buildings Initiative: Releases thread
  • post general feedback and goings-on to this, the SBI commons/administrative thread.

Hi johnnie2,

I must say, this Split Buildings thread is a very good idea29.gif. Ill keep an eye on it to be informed on those spectacular buildings.

Also I am surprised to see my CJ linked in your signature. I am very proud of this!!! Maybe some day we will hear of you in Columbia River.

Thanks and good luck with this thread!!!44.gif

jeronij, I'm pleased you're following the thread and that you think as highly of this type of building as I do. 48.gif  I believe they really are an asset to us as city builders and city observers.  Speaking of observing cities, don't be surprised to see your journal linked in my signature; it's a constant source of inspiration and has allowed me to see things I didn't know could exist in SC4K, and most likely beyond.

I'm proud to announce a new addition to the split buildings collection:

    • CSX's Nexis Grain Shipping version 1 , a Rush Hour-compatible version of mrbisonm's NexisGrainExport .  The lot is a grain export facility that extends over a rail line.

Remember, this collection is open to all visitors---expand it by linking to your own split building discoveries!

EDIT: emphasized CSX's updated version as the preferred addition.

More split buildings would be nice... There should be some split high schools(different schools since having the same looking school would be far from realistic in the same town) and some split recreation facilities. I'm following this thread too.

Yeah, split buildings are nice. I have yet to make one yet, though, but I may make one in the future.

All excellent ideas, Quack.  Your mention of split recreation facilities sparked an idea in my mind: California's giant redwoods!  Some of these ancient trees are so large and stable that a few have been hollowed out to allow vehicles to drive underneath; see this journal of a redwood forest roadtrip and this picture gallery of the Avenue of the Giants .

Of course, this means that the giant California redwood meets the criteria for split building status. 18.gif  I hope some BAT'er(s) take our ideas into consideration.  Also, it's good to hear you're tracking the thread.

DuskTrooper: Awesome!  I'm honored to have a veteran builder now looking into split buildings!  I know I'll be looking forward to one of your creations, should you decide to direct some of your talent into this area. 16.gif

Following in Quack's example, I also open this thread to receiving ideas for new split buildings.  We might just capture the attention of the BAT'ers. 38.gif

I didn't even think of the Redwoods in Cali... that would so nice to have since those woods since they are my favorite woods.(somehow when I was little I saw some gruesome stuff in there)

I couldn't really get the hang of batting but I wanna give it another try... but it will probably be a while and hopefully I can try to make a split building.

I was also thinking of having like some residential buildings with an arch on the bottom middle area where cars could go through... I think I have seen something like that in a European movie or an old James Bond movie.

Edit: Hmmm... I tried to download BAT but it only gave me gmax region cencus which I already have... where can I get the BAT program at?

Have you also considered buildings that are placed over existing roadways or transit ways but not by tunneling?  I tried to find a picture to post but could not find an example.  In Philadephia, the Post Office Annex building sits partially over the Schuylkill Expwy and transit tracks.  It is a sight to see all of those steel girders holding up such a big building above the expressway.

This is going to be an exciting update... 38.gif

I hope what you saw in Redwood Park wasn't too gruesome, Quack, but I gather that you liked the experience overall since the Park is your favorite forest. 1.gif  I'm pleased that you're considering revitalizing your BAT'ting abilities; you'll surely get the hang of it with time and practice---the important thing is to start.  That you're looking into modeling a split building is icing on the cake.

You've again presented an interesting idea; I tend to envision such a split residential building as high-wealth, and possibly part of a large residential development planned and constructed by a high-end realty corporation.  Is this what you had in mind?  I'd like to hear your thoughts.

As for the location of the BAT tool itself, perhaps a thread observer can refresh us with the needed information. 2.gif

schooner2, I believe you may have opened our eyes to a new class of split building.  I think the proper way to integrate this new class is to generalize the definition of the entire category: we can now refer to a split building as any building that partially or completely extends over a transit conduit, including roads, rail, avenues, and highways.  The main differentiating factor between classes then becomes whether the building extends over that transit conduit to reach something on the other side (another piece of itself) or not (like Philadelphia's Post Office Annex).

Thanks for your insight!  And yes, I can imagine how fantastic the building must look leaning over that expressway. 48.gif

I came up with an interesting idea for a split building as I pondered the thought of a structure partially extending across a transit conduit: Aruba's famous Dividivi tree !  These trees natually bow as a result of a constant breeze generated by tradewinds sweeping across the island.  Presumably, a large, well-advanced Dividivi tree could hover over a small street or walkway (as in the photo), or even a paved road or one side of an avenue.

frogface, thanks for your contribution!  Your General Hospital certainly deserves a place in the split buildings collection.  The link you posted doesn't point directly to the hospital: it forwards visitors to https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?mode=files&filetype=BAT&Str=general  rather than https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?mode=files&filetype=BAT&Str=general%20hospital  as was intended.

Feel free to include a short description of the lot and/or link the lot's name rather than the URL; these steps will assist city builders and BAT'ers in quickly gaining an overview of what's currently available for use in their cities and as targets for BAT'ing talent. 1.gif

    And now...

I'm proud to announce the Split Buildings Initiative!

The Split Buildings Initiative, or SBI, is an entity formed to advance and encourage the creation and use of split buildings.  Any community member may choose to represent or act in the interests of the initiative by posting ideas for new split buildings, contributing links to split building lots and BAT's on the STEX and elsewhere, releasing new content to advance the cause (lots, BAT's, textures, etc.), and so on, as has always been the case.  SBI has been established to unify those interested within the community and to formalize the split building concept.

As such, I introduce two graphical banners that any interested party may display in his or her forum signature (perhaps linking the graphic back to this thread):

    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//SBI_banner_01.gif align=baseline><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//SBI_banner_02.gif align=baseline>

The banners feature the proposed SBI logo, the lowercase Greek letter omega, and the proposed SBI slogan: build over.  Omega seems to naturally represent the split buildings concept: you can imagine the left and right pylons as buildings extending across the middle loop, a transit conduit.  The build over slogan nicely covers both those split buildings that fully extend over a transit conduit and those that partially cover the expanse.

Keep those ideas and links coming! 48.gif

Thanks for your comments, Johnnie2.  I would like to become a representative of the SBI group.  I am not a batter myself but would like to provide any assistance and input to this initiative.  (Someday, when I have more time, I would like to learn how to create buildings)  I will continue to look for pix of built-over buildings.  If I find any, I will post on this thread.

Two great examples that should be familiar to New Yorkers:

The George Washington Bridge Bus Station , which is built over the Trans-Manhattan Expressway.

Also over the same expressway, and an even more familiar, are the Bridge Apartments ... four 32-story apartment buildings straddling the expressway leading to the bridge. Pictures

Atomische, Those are great pictures.  I remember those buildings as I have driven underneath them plenty of times, but I did not know their identities.   Exactly what I was looking for!!!  I also found some pix:

This is the Schuylkill Expressway underneath the 30th Street RR Station (which is next to the PO Annex building).  This gives you the idea of driving under these massive girders.  This next picture (below) is just an example of what can be built above an highway.  In this shot it is only a another road, but imagine if it was a building instead.

This is looking to be another good one... 9.gif

No need to request representative status, schooner2: you're an SBI representative because you think of yourself as an SBI representative. 2.gif  That is all that is required.  And I'm excited about your desire to create buildings---the important thing is to start.

The pictures you posted certainly do open the mind to new ideas; I really appreciate the first because it puts me in the perspective of a person traveling under a large, extended split building, a viewpoint I hadn't previously considered.  The second is also thought-provoking, as you said.  I hope the underpass is well-lit given its darkened appearance here and the merging operation involved. 1.gif

Thanks for your continuing support. 48.gif

atomische, excellent post.  Seeing the Bridge Apartment photo series is rather invigorating, especially the first picture shot through the wire grating showing the expressway disappearing under one of the apartment complexes---the photo itself being well-done.  I'm drawn to that particular shot because it hints at the prevalence of split buildings in today's existing construction, and just how impressive one of these buildings looks in an advanced urban environment (and therefore possibly ingame).

Also, thanks for finding such a high-quality aerial view of the bus station; it seems as if the expressway really does terminate just under the structure.

Get back to us, Quack!  Reset your mind and then come out and play. 9.gif

    On the SBI agenda:

    1) Standardized Naming Conventions for New Content

As BAT interest seems to be rising in the split buildings area, I thought it prudent to introduce a naming system by which new split building content (including BAT's, lots, textures, and so on) may be easily and quickly recognized.

The naming system proposes that developers who have created new content specifically for the initiative:

    • prepend SBI to the name of the content when uploading to the STEX or other exchanges.  This allows a person browsing the STEX to execute a search for SBI and immediately be granted access to the greater majority of split building material (discounting the existing material already on the STEX, which is being referenced by the split building collection's growing list of links in this thread).  In addition, prepending the SBI phrase creates a certain unity among search results, furthering the initiative.

    • include either a Created for the Split Buildings Initiative: build over. or In support of SBI: build over. phrase to their content's description upon uploading to the STEX or other exchanges.  Alternatively, a developer might include one of the SBI graphical banners from above.  If a phrase is used, link the build over portion to this split buildings thread; if a graphic is used, link the graphic to this split buildings thread.  In tandem, the linked phrase or linked graphic provides a STEX browser a route to finding more information about this type of building.

    • be prepared to post a new split buildings link in the content entry's comment section on the STEX or other exchange, if necessary.  This is to ensure that a link to an active split buildings discussion area is always available.  I don't foresee this thread undergoing any unfortunate events that would render a link to it defunct, but it is of course always better to have a plan for managing risk (not risk avoidance, mind you 2.gif).

I'd love to hear people's thoughts on this naming system

    2) Request for Texture IID's Now Active

I've requested , on behalf of the Split Buildings Initiative, that a range of instance ID's be pre-allocated for use by developers creating new split building content.  This pre-allocation would update BSC's global texture index on the STEX to show SBI as the designer reserving a range of IID's.  SBI's IID management, however, remains outsourced to the BSC texture index managers: to allocate an IID range for an individual project, a new content developer would visit the BSC texture index thread  and state that a range should be assigned to the developer from SBI's range.  The developer is then free to have the range entry's designer field updated to SBI: (developer's name) or just the developer's name itself in BSC's global texture index.

This is the plan that has been suggested to the BSC texture index managers.  SBI will keep you advised of any further updates.  Thoughts?

    3) SBI New Content Seal

I'm proud to present the proposed SBI new content seal:

    SBIhttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//SBI_new_content_seal_01.gif align=baseline>

Developers who have created new content specifically for the initiative should overlay the content's STEX preview image(s) with the proposed seal graphic near the lower-righthand corner to further unify all SBI-focused entries.  Also, to put a proposed SBI graphical spin on things, content developers are requested, but not obligated, to arrange any additional graphical seals of the developer's own interest vertically along the right border of the STEX preview image rather than across the bottom border.

The seal features the attractive SBI omega logo housed in a sea of blue met on all sides by highlighted retaining lines.  Ghosted sbi letters appear on either side of a glowing sbi version, all of which are neatly tucked into a banner of slightly brighter hue than omega's deep blue sea.  I've found the seal to maintain its graphical integrity at a variety of zoom levels; feel free to experiment with many resizing options.

@everyone: How will you help SBI grow today?

Well I've been skating all day and when I arrived at this one park... I notived a building that had a street go down and through a garage parking lot and on through the other side of the building. Gave me an idea for this thread and if somehow I can get a picture of it (it's a 30 minute drive) I will.

Just now I thought of a semi big commercial building that has a rail running through it and a station where the employees can get on/off at. I really haven't gone into too much thinking on it but maybe someone can think of some more stuff on that subject.

I'll try to look into this subject more where I live but it's a bland city with nothing that can't be done in SC4RH.

Well, johnnie 2, I took the plunge and downloaded gmax, and BAT this evening.  I will be spending many many hours learning how to use these tools.  Although this will take alot of time away from actually playing my region, I think in the end it will be satisfying to create new buildings for this initiative as well as some of my own BAT ideas.  In reading your last post, you have done alot of foundation work already.  The logo looks great!  44.gif

Quack, it seems you're beginning to see things you've never quite seen before (the street running through the garage parking lot), and that's always a good sign. 19.gif  I'm pleased that the thread has produced this effect on its readers, myself included.  A picture of that complex would be beneficial.

A commercial office building that encapsulates its own passenger rail terminal...mmm, I like the sound of this.  The idea reminds me of a certain building that appeared on SimCity 2000's box cover : see the orange building just under the UFO intercepting a rail line on its left side?  Now, we could simply say that the building is a passenger rail station---or we could think of it as a commercial split building that accepts a rail line.  Every time I've looked at the building since SimCity 2000's release, I've considered it an advanced split building (to match the impressive city in the background) rather than a standard train station.

Please elaborate on your commercial building idea in the new Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas thread .  (See the SBI agenda below for details. 38.gif)

In regard to the location of the BAT, see deadwoods' excellent BAT FAQ , which contains a link to the BAT download page on the EA SimCity site.  I highly recommend deadwoods' BAT Lot Development 101 for a comprehensive document on creating custom content with the BAT.

As an aside, Quack, I'm sure gmax wasn't trying to be homosexual; I know it's an expression, but please do choose your words more precisely in the future. 2.gif

schooner2, I'm incredibly excited about the whole new avenue of growth that has become accessible to you with your decision to start BAT'ting! 9.gif  I'm also pleased about your realization of just how much time and energy is involved, and even more pleased that you're willing to make that investment. 16.gif  Don't feel pressured to begin modeling buildings for the initiative---focus on what you want to do.  Excellent results will follow soon thereafter. 48.gif

Thanks for your comment on the SBI logo.  I think the logo is attractive, in part, because the lowercase omega is just so sexy. 9.gif  Really.  Look at it.

    On today's SBI docket:

    1) SBI Spinoff Threads Launched

SBI has launched two additional threads in the STEX forum entitled Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas and Split Buildings Initiative: Releases .

Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas contains contributors' ideas, thoughts, and suggestions for new split buildings content, including BAT models for construction, lots, textures, props, and so on.  This is an excellent thread for posting:

    • photos of real-world construction and links to photo galleries
    • a new idea for a split building
    • thoughts on needed split building content (BAT's, lots, related textures, props, etc.)

In time, existing split building ideas in this thread will be reposted to Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas.  Please post new ideas directly to Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas .

Split Buildings Initiative: Releases contains links to existing and newly-released split building content on the STEX and other exchanges:

    • any links already featured on the STEX and other exchanges should be posted in the Split Buildings Initiative: Releases thread.
    • New content developers should post a link to the new content on the STEX or other exchange to the Split Buildings Initiative: Releases thread, as well as beginning a new thread specializing in that new content, if the developer desires.  In sum, the Split Buildings Initiative: Releases thread forms an official log of SBI releases and general discussion regarding those releases alongside the unified STEX SBI search results.

In time, existing links to split building content in this thread will be reposted to Split Buildings Initiative: Releases.  Please post new content links directly to Split Buildings Initiative: Releases .

These threads were launched to provide ideas and releases posts room for proper, extended discussion.  This thread will continue on as a commons for administrative posts, general community feedback, and relaxed posts from new content developers and other interested parties.

    2) Texture IID Pre-Allocation Request Outstanding

SBI is awaiting a response from the BSC texture index managers concerning its request for a pre-allocated block of texture IID's .  Additional updates on this item to be posted as they develop.

    3) Fun SBI Multimedia

I'm proud to present the premier SBI desktop image:

    1024x768

    1280x1024

    1680x1050 (widescreen)

This carefully-crafted desktop image features that sexy omega logo we've come to know and love hovering above a reflective surface, the entire location shrouded in a sea of relaxing, deep blue hue.  Text placed out of the reflective scene announces the Split Buildings Initiative while a supporting line depicting on Simtropolis reminds us of where the initiative began and where it lives today.

    Enjoy!

Well again as I said earlier... it only installs the Region Census stuff... not the BAT program which is starting to anger me... first when I went there, I did get the program but now... It's just the little stupid program that I already have.

Edit... alright I figured out the problem... I wasn't logged in my right account so I had to go find out which one my account was a product one.

Quack, see the Where to get GMAX thread stickied on the BAT - Open Discussion forum .  I was able to download a gmax 1.2 installer within three clicks.  If you have further issues, post to the Where to get GMAX thread or start a new topic on the BAT - Open Discussion forum .

    9.gif

Pooty, feel free to post ideas and photos to the Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas thread .  As for the design you proposed, it looks to be more of a transit conduit above another transit conduit rather than a split building proper, as you said.  Try looking through the ideas and photos posted earlier in this thread for inspiration, and then 1) keep posting ideas and 2) post those ideas in the Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas thread . 48.gif

I'll duplicate this response in the Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas thread .

I think of the many commercial buildings, whether 5 stories, or 50 stories, that have skybridges connecting them. Anything from twin commercial skyscrapers, to an office building and parking garage.

My idea behind this would be a set of universal skybridges that can be placed as a road/avenue/highway transit-enabled piece between two buildings, and that would extend out to each side so that it would go into, and visually join with the buildings on either side. These lots would also be created at different heights.

    Maybe this could work.

Yours is a very interesting idea, Fairlane500.  Would a skybridge be placed by the user ingame, would skybridges be released as a collection of BAT models or props for BAT and lot builders to integrate directly into their split buildings, or both?  A prominent issue with user skybridge placement ingame is enabling the user to quickly choose a skybridge of the correct height: at what and how many heights do we build skybridges, and how do we allow the user to select the best skybridge without laborious trial and error?

I do immediately like the idea of releasing a collection of skybridges of differing architectural styles (much like different flavors of other pedestrian or vehicle bridges) for inclusion by BAT'ters and lot builders into their split building creations.  I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this in the Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas thread .

Thanks for posting your idea, Fairlane500, and congratulations on 800 posts! 48.gif

A general reminder: feel free to post ideas in the Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas thread .  It's dedicated to full, extended discussions of your thoughts and ideas! 10.gif

Hey, what's up with SBI lately?

    1) SBI Featured on Simtropolis Front Page!

That's right: witness that sexy omega logo alongside an introduction to the split buildings concept on the Simtropolis front page .  Thanks to dirk for catapulting the initiative onto the Simtropolis newswire! 44.gif

    2) Texture IID Request Filled

In response to SBI's request for a pre-allocated IID block, the BSC texture index managers have reserved the IID range 79000000 to 79FFFFFF for use by SBI's supporting developers.  See the following item for information on how individual developers may capture an IID subrange.

    3) Texture IID Tracking Thread Launched

In a move to bring critical processes inhouse, SBI has launched a texture IID tracking thread in the BAT - Workshop forum to facilitate expedited texture IID allocation for individual developer use.  How this works: supporting developers creating new content specifically for the Split Buildings Initiative have free reign of SBI's reserved texture IID range; a supporting developer allocates for him or herself an IID subrange of his or her choosing from the SBI block.  The tracking thread is dedicated to recording individual developers' allocations to prevent IID clashes.  To ensure consistency, a supporting developer looking to allocate an IID subrange must:

    • read through the tracking thread to uncover what remaining IID subrange is available; if no subrange is available or the remaining IID subrange is too small to fit an intended allocation, apply directly to the BSC texture managers via the BSC texture index thread for an additional IID block on behalf of SBI.  This last remark is vitally important: indicating that SBI has reserved the new IID block allows other supporting developers to use any portion of the new IID block and thus ensures that any supporting community member may utilize all of SBI's assets to create split building content.  Once the new IID block has been granted to SBI, indicate the block's IID range in the tracking thread in a big way so that everyone can see and quickly assess the new addition.

    • post the allocated subrange's boundary IID's in the tracking thread: I allocate IID's 79000000 to 79xxxxxx.  Supporting developers should allocate IID's serially; this means that the next developer would capture IID's beginning with 79xxxxxx + 1 in the example.

This protocol is repeated in the tracking thread's first post.  SBI's texture IID block is now open . 44.gif

    4) More Fun SBI Multimedia

I'm proud to present a second SBI desktop image:

    SBI

    Download:
    800x600
    1024x768
    1280x1024
    1680x1050 (widescreen)

The reflective surface and blue-hued sea return to host SBI's signature slogan: build overBuild glows mightily just left of center, casting light onto the two-toned band---a transit conduit.  Hovering above the conduit, quite appropriately, is over, cast of pure frosted ice rivaling the mirror below.  Placed out of the scene but in curious proximity to the nearer end of the two-toned transit conduit appears the two-lined phrase Split Buildings Initiative on Simtropolis, a familiar declaration and confident show of origin.

    Enjoy!

@everyone: See omega on the front page! 9.gif  Download the desktop images and show us the delicate interplay between background and icons happening on your system.  Post your ideas , releases , and general feedback (here) in their dedicated threads! 10.gif  How will you help further the growth of SBI this day?

Also, check out the city journals forum ---some of these latest CJ's are simply amazing. 19.gif

Here's my idea for a split building...

It's not really split, and not really a building, but it travels above a highway...15.gif

    An SBI update:

    1) Ideas, Releases Threads Synchronized with Commons

All ideas proposed in this, the SBI commons/administrative thread, have been reposted in the Split Buildings Initiative: Ideas thread .  A special thanks to those authors who have already shared their thoughts. 44.gif

In addition, all entries in the current split buildings collection have been published to the Split Buildings Initiative: Releases thread .  As such, all current SBI content appears in its corresponding dedicated thread; all threads are now synchronized.

    2) Administrative Entries Now Open to All Community Supporters

Any community supporter of the Split Buildings Initiative is welcomed and encouraged to post an administrative entry (much like the entry you're currently reading) in this thread to log a noteworthy item.

@everyone: How will you help SBI grow today?
