Actually, by clicking on the bolded word symbols to the left of the text field in the reply window, you can preview the smilies.

True.   In case anyone was wondering about the numbers:

I replaced 13 of the default smilies with our old ones and added in 10 more bringing the total to 38.  There are still 24 old smilies that haven't been included but having 62 smilies seemed like overkill.

We could, if people really want to, pick a handful of the current ones to vote off the island and a handful of the remaining old ones to vote on.

the one you must bring back is the "sly" one...
you know that smiley that looks on the left and then on the right like the ninja does only with out the black thing...
another one is the "hmmm" one... its the one next to Ski's label...

I think there still are 13 default smiles in that list up there. They don't really fit in with the custom ST smiles, and I don't think it would be a big deal if you just replaced all of the default smiles with ST ones. I think that comes out to 51 total smiles? It doesn't seem like ST 4.0 had that many...

Whatever you guys do is cool, but it would be sweet to have all the old emoticons back.

Well, even if there are a handful of emoticons (old) missing, it was a relief to see one of the old ones pop up when I clicked on the "cool" emoticon.

At least the ROFL emoticon is back.

My opinion? Get rid of all of the new "default smilies" and just put in all of our old custom ones instead.

After all, what's the purpose of a smiley that's a mug of beer, a glass of whine, a moon, a clock, a camera, etc...
There really is none.

And while I will agree that we don't want to have too many smilies, there are some websites which have way more than 62 of them. Take DeviantART, for instance. You can't view the full list of smilies unless you're a registered member there, but there are easily 100 of them. There may even be 200. I haven't counted...

SkiGeek: Of the new smilies, I especially don't want to see the beer, clock, or gift smilies go.  Of the old ones, I would like to see 6, 20, 34, 41, & 49 saved.  That would make us three fewer smilies than we currenlty have (at least I think we would be three fewer).

I once went to a forum hosting website once, and they had a list of over 1,500 different smilies that a forum hosted their could you.  Frankly, I don't think that we need anymore than we had originally.

Well, my response to the "do we need all of them" question is this:

Yes. Definitely. We had them all before and they all got used. Besides, people put time and effort into making them. It would be disrespectful to just all of a sudden decide that "we don't need them any more".
And, of course, the obvious counter argument is "why not? what do we lose by having them?" The answer is nothing. In fact, we gain something by having them. We lose something by getting rid of them.

And, for the record, DeviantART has 483 smilies. However, a great many of them rarely or never get used, and only find themselves included becuase they were either made by or really liked by someone in a position of influence. Besides, there's even a whole category there for "smilies" wehre people can post smilies they've made as art. A good portion of DeviantART's smilies started life that way.

Here, the smilies are on a drop down list.  Scrolling through a drop down list of 483 smilies sounds tedious to say the least.  Even 50 sounds a bit unwieldy. But we will see what we can do.

That's why I'm not a fan of the drop down list. If it's possible, it'd be great to get something under the post...box... thing () that displays the smilies.

I really really really like the old smilies that arnt included. I used them all the time. And you dont NEED to get rid of the ColdFusion default smilies, you can never have two many smilies (though DevART may be a bit overzealous)

I'm not a regular user of 'little pictures' in my messages, but then again I'm new to internet, e-mail, instant messaging ... not to mention posting on forums. (Simtropolis is the only forum I've ever visited.) Long scroll lists are a terrible idea. A pop-up box or a customized list of favorites would be great, I think.

Okay, well, my list now has an update to it which shoud be rather useful: all the old smilies.

I had to edit the post at least a dozen times and reupload one of the images with a different name to get the code to stop screwing itself up, but it works now. Mostly, anyway. Some of the text is a bit bigger than the rest, but I really don't know how to go about fixing that (there's no text size coding), and I don't want to attempt to fix it lest I screw things up again. But at least all the images show and it's usable, right?

Whenever someone qoutes someone else and there is a smilie inside the qoute, then it doesn't work. Why doesn't the smilie work? Is it bad coding or what?

For example, look just above my post towards sloppet's post. See how the smilie is missing in that qoute...

^^^because when quoting, it makes a smilie not as its code, but as its url in IMG tags. and for some reason, all of the url afrer simtropolis.com/forum/ vanishes. You can fix it, but you need to know the full url of the smilie(s) in question and you need to do it individualy every time you quote a post with a smilie in it.

My guess is that this is a bug that happens due to the tag stacking. It's IMG tags within QUOTE tags, after all.
And then there's the issue that the bbcode tags have a tendency to misbehave not only when you stack them, but also if you put a lot of them in one post.
