Hertz talked. We listened. There was nowhere else to go. Kahuna women with flowers in their hair gave us water, food and even a privy. But the warriors watched and guarded all ways out. Hertz talked all day. His voice was hypnotic. It called to me. Pulled at my very core even with its derangement. He started by talking about the Pumba society and its history and dreams. There was a shadow though. Even as it built great monuments it was deteriorating from within. The machines built by the sons were not those of the fathers. If the Pumbas did not change they would disappear beneath the jungle as each generation became weaker.

He talked about the Pumbas and the Honchos and the Cheeses and how they were not prepared for the true fallout of the Feather Star crash and the Great Navel of the Earth. How it represented not only tangible change but a change in insight. The universe was now bigger than the Pumbas. It was bigger than the jungle.

    Picture 173.2
    heartofdarkness122copyoh4.jpg

He told us that the Pumbas were slowly learning of this bigger world and the building of a great edifice to observe the skies was but their first infant step. It was a sign that the Pumbas were ready to receive the understanding of the Perfect Circle Yet Finished and their place in the universe.

    Picture 173.3
    heartofdarkness123copymb8.jpg

There was trouble though, as many Pumbas were starting to fear this new knowledge. And there was something that could be far worse. The supply company pumbas were a new type of Pumba that focused on personal wealth instead of group admiration. He said they are the first ripples of a great tide that, if left unchecked, would consume all of Pumbadom. He talked about the Kahunas and how with the understanding of the Perfect Circle Yet Finished they will lead the Pumbas away from this blight. He talked about how even as he spoke Cosby and the children of the Circle were sabotaging the ivory soapstone mines.

    Picture 173.4
    heartofdarkness124copyta9.jpg

Frequently he was overcome by coughing fits that doubled him over. His great red robe with broad shoulders would shake and fall open and what I saw inside was a shell of a man, his clothes hanging loose on his skin and bones. Hertz was hollow not only in his garments but in himself. Then he would stand and the master orator would once again be standing before the great circle.

    Picture 173.5
    heartofdarkness126copyun2.jpg

But then a moment came, a terrible moment when Hertz looked me in the eyes and said “In these troubled times many a Pumba will find comfort in fear and in hate. Beware. Pumbas will fight Pumbas” I knew I had entered into the very heart of insanity...

    I am happy. Are you?

It was nearing daybreak and I knew what I had to do. I knew that Hertz had to be stopped. His madness was infectious. Even now some of the crew were talking like him.

The sentries were light. The jungle was silent. I slipped away into the night like a jungle fox in the pale moonlight. Sweat dripped in my eyes. Soon I was upon the tent that held Hertz, my hunting knife yet unsheathed. I opened the flap carefully then slipped inside.

    Picture 174.1

    heartofdarkness131copywo6.jpg

I started to unsheathe my knife.

“Are you prepared to do what you came here to do Merlot?”

I startled and saw for the first time an eye. There in a sliver of moonlight a sickly but bold eye stared back unblinking. Hertz.

“My prophecies are coming true Merlot. A Pumba raising a hand in violence against another Pumba, Merlot.” A great rasp came from his throat. “ This is just the beginning Merlot. There will be great bloodshed unless the Pumbas embrace the ways of the Perfect Circle Yet Finished.”

He stopped and coughed, his body shaking the cot on which he lay. He leaned over and spat blood into a bucket placed for this purpose. “I’m dying, Merlot, so you needn’t bother. But mark my words this is just the beginning.”

He coughed again. “Beware for there are creatures in the jungle that feed on fear. They are growing stronger and bolder. The Pumbas are unaware of their existence but I am afraid not even the walls of the Grand Pumba’s residence will stop them.”

“You think of me as hollow but now you know what you are capable of and for what reasons. We are not so much different as you would wish. Other Pumbas will come to similar conclusions as you. Are we not all brothers, eh?”

He started to laugh. It was a raspy, thin laugh that turned into a cough. I thought he would say more but the coughs became more violent. Hertz mouth was slick with his own blood. His body shook and thrashed. The cot creaked as if it were a splinter away from crashing to the floor. His hands were like claws.

He sat bolt up right. “The Horror! The Horror!”

Hertz collapsed back into the cot dead and stiff. The last breath signing from his lungs. I stood watching frozen. Time seemed to stop. Maybe he did know something. Maybe he did see the future. But that future was not the future as I, and my kind, believed. I might have a chance to stop it.

I walked out of the tent, through the clearing and to the edge of the cliff. I walked until I stood on a bluff. The moon was setting while the first rays of the sun were just brightening the bottom of the clouds. Down below was The Jungle. Its trees shrouded in mist with but a solitary branch or a bird to hint at the hidden darkness.

    Picture 174.2

    heartofdarkness132copynk6.jpg

The village was deserted. We packed and left the way we came. At the bottom, squeezed between the crater and those wretched hills, I looked up and back and saw a solitary female figure standing high up on the precipice. I stopped and watched for a few moments then I turned and plunged into the jungle.

    Yours truly, Merlot.

    The End

    This is the end

    Beautiful friend

    This is the end

    My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end

Of everything that stands, the end

No safety or surprise, the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line

Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev. Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.

Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom!

    Rosenbergs, H-Bomb, Sugar Ray, Panmunjom

Brando, "The King and I", and "The Catcher in the Rye"

Eisenhower, vaccine, England's got a new queen

    Marciano, Liberace, Santayana goodbye

    We didn't start the fire

    It was always burning

    Since the world's been turning

    We didn't start the fire

    No we didn't light it

But we tried to fight it

    Lexus of Guinness.

    Welcome to page 437,035!

Endless Horizon Beach….The End of Part 56,001

As promised here is Endless Horizon Beach's 56,001 part. It has changed a little since the last visit. But in the future I am sure things will change. Here is the first picture with only the relevant area show.

    Picture 176.1
    endlesshorizonbeach1761copyec8.jpg

Lets focus on Endless Horizon Beach, one of the cities where many of this generation’s individual friends are having lives. For instance inTerNetnAmE-453 is opening up a new restaurant in the junkyard district. I hope he has many future customers. Oops he died at the age of 85. We will all miss him in the future.
    Picture 176.2
    endlesshorizonbeach1762copyis7.jpg

Another individual friend is Us3rN@ME78. She is living the high life in Endless Horizon Beach. Only the future will tell. Oh wait, she died at 86.

    Picture 176.3
    endlesshorizonbeach1763copyva4.jpg

Now it is time to check in with one of the local celebrities, Lexus the III. He is one of the most influential people in the city because his grandfather invented a cross between a truck and a spruce tree. It is known as a LBST for “Let’s Build a Spruce Truck”. It makes transporting from town to town that much easier. I wonder what other inventions await in the future?

    Picture 176.4
    endlesshorizonbeach1764copyod5.jpg

The secret of this revolutionary form of transportation was kept within the family and has lead to untold influence within the Pumba society. With that influence sons, daughters and grand children all became masters of their own influential monopolies. Luckily there are no estate taxes in pumba society so Lexus the III is free to do what ever he wants with that untold inherited wealth without the burden of helping society.  Besides, taxes would just get in the way of the competition on who can build the biggest mansion. In the future do you think they will name a city after him? Or may be he will become a Ruler? Perhaps a clock to count down the years until something happens?

    Picture 176.5
    endlesshorizonbeach1765copyev2.jpg

Of course the Pumbas have been busy while we were on another story line. The Pumbas are getting curious. After the fall of the Feather Star they wanted to know what is really in the sky (besides a big blue grid). The Grand Pumba gathered the greatest pumba minds together in a committee and after much deliberation and buck-passing they came up with the idea of a place where experts can go and, without interference from city lights, gaze up at the sky. They call this place the Sky Gazing Observation Place. I wonder what future discoveries it will find?

    Picture 176.6
    endlesshorizonbeach1766copyjz2.jpg

    Interesting news today.

    Picture 176.7
    endlesshorizonbeach1767dailynapkincopyil

    And the next day.

    Picture 176.8
    endlesshorizonbeach1768dailynapkincopypz

Dam, think I am forgetting something. Dam, dam, grand dam dediddy dam. I can’t remember as I am inundated with thoughts about the future. Just inundated like I was in a flood of water. I guess I will remember…in the future.

    -Dan

The Edgy Rag: A Tale of Four Foxes.

    Chapter One, The Arising.

(In steps a skinny man with a goatee, a beret, black clothing, and a bongo drum. With his eyes covered with dark glasses he moves to the center of the stage to a single microphone and places his bongo drum on a stool. The house lights are dark and the man is lit only by a single small spotlight. He begins to speak as he bangs on the drum.)

Yo daddy oh, welcome to the Edgy Rag, a hip place to hear some deep poetry and some hip stories, yah dig?

    Picture 178.1
    endlesshorizonbeach1781copymm8.jpg

So who are the foxes and cats that hang in this establishment? First there is Araliaceae, a hip fox who is totally into that new age progressive fad. Liliaceae is the next fox. She believes in farming and factories. Totally the pumba way, yah dig? Rosoideae is one fox who has no idea what she wants. Her future is wide open man. I relate yeah. Asteraceae is the flighty one. She just likes to take a ride on the roulette wheel of life, yeah, like the universe is just her playground. Oh yeah.

The Edgy Rag is on a little spot of asphalt in the town of Endless Horizon Beach yeah. Pumbas need to relax and the Edgy Rag is the place to be oh yeah. Many pumbas come to the Edgy Rag, yeah, but they come and go, only the regulars reliably show. This is their story, the story of the growth in this little spot of the ‘Beach.

    Picture 178.2
    endlesshorizonbeach1782copyiq0.jpg

    Chapter Two, The Gathering.

The foxes were together one eve when a twist in the conversation focused the four on the building of cities. Endless Horizon Beach, daddy oh, is a town of disheveled barracks and moldy tents. There are many ideas about what to do and many conversations on the ‘ject. Araliaceae thought that it would be a good idea to have a place to meet, teach and learn. Liliaceae didn’t think that was as important as having a place to work. Asteraceae, laughed and talked about poetry and rain. Rosoideae kept changing her mind. The conversation went on all night. Wild, just wild yeah.

    Picture 178.3
    endlesshorizonbeach1783copyur0.jpg

    Chapter Three, The First Punch.

A week later a new building was being fabricated right near the Edgy Rag. Rosoideae, Liliaceae, and Asteraceae were surprised to see Araliaceae with hardhat on and blue prints spread out on a table. “I was sick of sleeping on a cot so I am building a small inn. Those old cots in the tents are so itchy. Now me and other Pumbas will have a place to stay while we build the ‘Beach” said Araliaceae. The other three regulars looked on as several dozen workers hammered and sawed and the building slowly took shape.

    Picture 178.4
    endlesshorizonbeach1784copydq9.jpg

    Chapter Four, Competition Aplenty.

No sooner than the Snoring Tavern was open for business than work started on another building. This time it was Asteraceae who was ordering pumbas around this way and that. “ I needed a place to hang my paintings and keep my poetry away from the damp rain. Those barracks are so humid” said Asteraceae as the warehouse took shape.

“Why, I’ll show you who is better at building, you ungrateful upstarts” said Liliaceae. “I will build a great factory so all pumbas can show there affection for each other by buying my wonderful friendship bracelets.”

Rosoideae paced and pondered but could not commit to any one idea so she built a  candy shop and a small pet crematorium. “I like candy I think but it is always good to be prepared.” Rosoideae said as she smelled the flowers at a small gazebo.

“Someone has to design those friendship bracelets” said Liliaceae. “After all, I’m too busy keeping you horrible people in line.” Soon an office building graced the road, full of eager young pumbas ready to design the next popular friendship bracelet.

“Office building? You call that an office building?” said Araliaceae looking at Liliaceae’s new place. She turned and looked at her own building. “Now I have a place where pumbas can come from all over to learn about architecture at my new teaching center of building design.”

Chapter Five, Because I Felt Like Having a New Chapter.

Rosoideae and Asteraceae were very angry. “We can do better” they said and opened two apartment blocks and a music store.

    Picture 178.10
    endlesshorizonbeach17810copyzv7.jpg

Araliaceae smiled with wicked delight. “I got sick of that little of snoozing spot. I have a bigger inn now, as it is so popular. You might even call it a grand hotel.”

    Picture 178.11
    endlesshorizonbeach17811copyqq3.jpg

“It wouldn’t do for my factory workers not to have a place to stay” said Liliaceae as she cut the ribbon at the opening of the new apartment building right across the road from the hotel.

    Picture 178.12
    endlesshorizonbeach17812copygy6.jpg

“Why would anyone want to live in Araliaceae’s quaint hotel or Liliaceae’s drab apartments when they can live in the life of luxury in my condos and shop court”, said Rosoideae.

    Picture 178.13
    endlesshorizonbeach17813copyin8.jpg

Liliaceae pounded her fist on the table. “We need a place to store our supply of day palm drink!”
Rosoideae piped in. “What about a place to keep our books and a nice little place to pass on our history?”

    Picture 178.14
    endlesshorizonbeach17814copygz6.jpg

“With all these new residents, day palm energy, and learned knowledge the pumbas will want a place to congregate”, said Araliaceae. “And they will want to see my paintings displayed and not locked up in a dusty warehouse”, added Asteraceae. “So we have made a convention center”, they said together.

    Chapter Six, The Voice.

“What are you four doing?” said a male voice. They all turned to look. It was Little Blue the owner of the oil platform at the mouth of the river. “Can’t we all just get along? I bet we can come up with a project we can all be proud of.” He smiled that ten-gallon hat smile. “I know. What about a monorail?”
“Did he say monorail?” said Rosoideae.
“I believe he did”, said Araliaceae.
“He most certainly did”, said Liliaceae.
“Everyone loves a monorail”, said Asteraceae.

    “Did someone say monorail?”

(Man in tux and top hat enters stage right. Music starts up as the chorus line starts to Can-can in from stage left.)

A short update full of leftovers from the cutting room floor. They were either working images or rejects for whatever reasons and never put into the updates. Well, here they are.

So Endless Horizon Beach is starting to feel constrained. The center of the city is filled with a junkyard and a shantytown. This cannot remain this way. The Grand Pumba has formed a committee to investigate Endless Horizon Beach to see how the city should be shaped.

    Picture 180.1
    endlesshorizonbeach1801copyeh4.jpg

The junkyard was the first and only resident of this part of the jungle for years. It was just a spot on a spur line. Now it is right in the heart of the town.

    Picture 180.2

Sure there is some growth in EHB but it is localized and it can often block the right of way for roads.

    Picture 180.3
    endlesshorizonbeach1803copymr9.jpg

A factory here or there is not the solution.

    Picture 180.4
    endlesshorizonbeach1804copyrt4.jpg

It is all these barracks and tents that are still here after all this time. Most pumbas have moved back into the other cities after the reconstruction. However there are still many who have no place to which to return. Just like the barracks and tents, these pumbas are left behind.

As to what direction the city should head there will be much debate and many an opinion.

So here are some ideas about what to do with the land that was occupied by the junkyard.
    Picture 181.0
    endlesshorizonbeach1810copydn4.jpg

How about a park? Pumbas from all around could come here to relax after a long, hard day’s work.
    Option 1
    endlesshorizonbeach1811copyti4.jpg

Pumbas could always use another factory and there’s room for some housing too.
    Option 2
    endlesshorizonbeach1812copytx7.jpg

With the arrival of the Sky Gazing Observation Place in EHB maybe it is time for some diffusion of knowledge in some buildings of learning.
    Option 3
    endlesshorizonbeach1813copyye9.jpg

Displaced pumbas could use a place to stay. Also the population would really grow in EHB as people move here in search of a better place to live.
    Option 4
    endlesshorizonbeach1814copyaf6.jpg

One big building with indeterminate purpose could be a good thing.
    Option 5
    endlesshorizonbeach1815copyrx1.jpg

    Only time will tell.

    Lol.

i love this cj. always makes me laugh.

Now it is time to check in with one of the local celebrities, Lexus the III. He is one of the most influential people in the city because his grandfather invented a cross between a truck and a spruce tree. It is known as a LBST for "Let's Build a Spruce Truck". It makes transporting from town to town that much easier. I wonder what other inventions await in the future?

That story of yours is so cool. It sounds a lot like those urban myths you hear. 3.gif

Ah, as for the space, I would much rather that park. It's by far the nicest option.
