Motorways vs. Mass Transit

I don't know if this already has a discussion, if it does, I'm sorry.

Anyway, I was just wondering what people think is better, especially in cities -

MOTORWAYS vs. MASS TRANSIT

MOTORWAYS - Motorways, Dual Carriageways, Highways, Expressways, Beltways, Bypasses, Throughpasses, (Road) Tunnel Projects, Divided Highways, Orbital Routes.

MASS TRANSIT - Metros, Subways, Light Rail, Suburban Rail, Urban Rail, Bus Systems, Monorail, Ferries, Trams.

Which do you think is better in combating traffic problems in towns/cities?

Some cities are famous for their emmense road systems (Los Angeles), while some are famous for their array of public transport options (New York). But, in the end, which is more affective, do we build more roads or more rail?

1. dont make 4 threads

You do need a mixture of both i agree, but your goal should be to get all sims out of there poluting cars onto your state of the art mass transit system, there are extra benefits to be realised in getting the sims to use the mass transit rather than there cars.Doesnt need to look pretty but if its convenient and going in the correct direction ,imo the sims prefer mass transit .

A dual combination of both Motor-ways and Mass-Transit is my suggestion.

I design my transport systems in certain ways such as to favour Mass-Transit. 1.gif

i use monorails alot because they look cool and mostly avenues but use a lot of well placed bus stops

Taxi stands are a great addition to any mass transit system. When the sim gets to their destination train or monorail station or whatever they walk across the road and hop in a taxi that takes them to work. This is better than busses in my opinion because they still generate customers in commercial buildings they pass by. That's not to say it's the ultimate transportation solution, just interesting to experiment with. Try searching for it (taxi stand) on here.

simcity seems to favor mass transit. since all sims move at once during rush hour, and the game measures traffic in how many sims are supposed to use a road(instead of tracking each individual sim on their way to work which would be how traffic would be in real life), ive noticed traffic can be abnormally high. Its hard to keep a huge city working on freeways alone. i think it would be a major challenge to recreate los angeles or houston in simcity because people in those cities often drive miles thru terrible traffic to get to work, and in simcity the sims wouldnt put up wth that and you'd end up with "abandoned due to commute time" buildings all over town.

Mass transit is way more cost-efficient than motorways. A long time ago (the experiment isn't on the forums any longer), I tested the cost-efficiency of all (exc. ferry) transit options, by comparing their cost/tile/10 years and their capacity. It turned out that trains, followed by subways, were 60 times more efficient than ground/elevated (I don't remember which) highways. Roads, and therefore buses, lag far behind - but as roads are needed anyway, buses remain the most practical option.
