If I make a custom lot out of various prop packs and texture packs is that somethign that is ethically acceptable?

if I were to upload it would I need to properly credit those who designed the props and/or seek their permission to use them?

this is my first time and I don't really know the proper manners for uploading

Well, at least you have enough common sense to ask the right questions beforehand - many people don't even do that. 19.gif

If you use prop packs like those of the BSC team (e.g. MJB, SWI21, CSX, gascooker, SimGoober etc.), then rest assured: These prop packs are made and uploaded for lot builders like you. For prop packs, you don't need to ask the author's permission. You can use them, but you may not include the prop packs in your uploaded file. Instead, you must link to them as external dependencies. All this is stated in the readme file that accompanies those prop packs.

By redirecting people to the prop packs, you will make sure that the creators of these packs get the credit they deserve. Otherwise, people might think you did it all yourself.

In addition to this, I personally think it's a sign of good manners to thank the creators in an additional line or two if you really like their stuff, like e.g. thanks to gascooker and vlakhaas for their cool props or something like that. It's not strictly required, thought, just a question of courtesy.

If you use buildings from separate uploads that are not included in a prop pack (e.g. if you wanted to use some of SimGoober's shopping malls as props on a custom lot of yours), then you should get in contact with the creator, tell him/her what you want to do and ask for permission.

I've done that a few times myself (see STEX 2.gif ), and I've always been received very friendly and positively. My experience is that if people see that you like and respect their creations and that you're up to something good/interesting with them, they will gladly grant you permission. 1.gif

Good luck and happy lot-making! 44.gif

lmao. you sound as confused as I did when I first started.
here's a tutorial to start with:
    https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=45927

Every lot has to have a building. You can start with any landmark lot you like but you will need to replace its building with one of your own. The tutorial will explain. It doesn't have to be anything more than a box but it has to be a different building. One thing the tutorial doesn't tell you is this:
If you want your building to be invisible so it doesn't show up on your new lot, then you'll want to set it to hidden when you create it in the BAT. To do this, select your box, right click on it, select properties, and then click the box in the menu make hidden. You won't see the box in the BAT anymore but trust me, it's still there. Then render (export) as the tutorial explains. You can then use this new building on your new lot. If you don't make it hidden you'll have to cover hide it under one of the props on your lot. That's what I did for the longest time (lol) until I found the make hidden option. Also, pay attention in the tutorial that if you want to make a landmark lot you need to create a landmark .desc file using the plugin manager. If you want to make a park, you make a park .desc file. Etc, etc, etc. If you get stuck, PM me. Be patient. It takes awhile to sort the pieces out. Good luck.

Believe in only what you can prove.
