Median and large airports?

I was wondering if you can get mid- and large- sized airorts? Because the airports I can build say something like Small Municiple Airport or Small International Airport. Does that mean once your airport reaches full funding and max capacity you get a bigger version?

I belive there are 2 upgrades to each airport...might be one....I don't use them myself but I don't beleive the upgrades take up anymore room...just cost extra money and gives the city more comercial cap relief.

 

a small internation airport will always be a small international airport.

I think once your commercial population gets over a certain threshold you get an item in your news ticker telling you your airport needs to be upgraded, which you can do by opening the news article and clicking a certain link.  The upgrade simply renovates the existing airport and doesn't take up more space or demolish anything.  But you can't actually plop a medium or large airport, they can only be upgrades of existing airports.

No, you can't upgrade to another type. A municipal airport starts out as a small municipal airport. When the capacity has been reached, your advisor will pop-up asking if you want to upgrade it. If you agree, it will turn into a medium municipal airport. If the capacity is again reached, you can upgrade it into a large municipal airport. You can't interconvert between airport types (landing strip, municipal, international) because they're of different sizes.

If you plop an airport when your city is large, the interval between upgrades can be short because of the huge demand. I placed a municipal airport in my city when it was ~200,000 in size. Ignoring the time it takes to upgrade the airport itself, the intervals between upgrades were only minutes apart (this was using the slowest speed).

By the way, airports are not an absolute necessity, though maybe a large map would need one. You can easily achieve commercial demand busting by neighbor connections. The better the interconnecting transport type (such as highways), the higher commercial demand relief achieved. There is no way in the game to check the demand caps but an addon by Equinox (found in the STEX) is available for this purpose.
