My son is a rabid SimCity 4 fan & has built a couple tremendous regions with a couple dozen amazing cities, all on a computer that barely runs the game.

Well, it was finally time to buy him a new laptop for college & we got him a tricked out Dell XPS, 2gb RAM, 7800 videocard, etc.  We installed SimCity4 & the game runs great.
However, now that we have installed SiMCity 4 on his new computer, we need to transfer his regions & cities to there...starting over is not an option14.gif
We've tried copying the regions folders from the old computer & dumped them into the new computer...the files are in the folders & are associated with SimCity 4.  But when we open the region, there are no cities, just open land!

Please help, or I fear he may go nuts starting over from scratch!

I've transfered complete regions before....did you put the old regions in the proper place...the my documents/simcity 4/regions

I transfered my regions from 1 pc to another pc...not a puter person myself46.gif...might be able to transfer to the lap top via serial cables or ethernet cables...depends on the connection avaliable to you

I just use the old file folder names region and (I zip them and added them to a cd-re-writeable disk myself) copy the folders to a temp folder...unzipped them there and draged and dropped each region folder included with all the cities..(the corasponding ini file and the config file are also needed for each region) to the folder stated above...if all the files are not included...the game will dump them all in the download cities folder

I'm not farmiliar with laptop myself...but this should work...as I'm lead to belive that it's the O/S you have not that it's a laptop is the key ...if not you could put all your cities into the download cities folder and import them to the region 1 by 1 (ps make sure you have the proper config map in the region folder first)

only other option I could see is transfer the files by some sort of method via the net..but that eat up a wack load of bandwith though...region files can be in the 100's of mb

If you use windows, did you put the files in the correct MyDocument - folder? And if the laptop has more than one user, does the user have all the appropriate rights (reading and writing. I did not copy my regions to a new pc but reinstalled windows after my motherboard failed to work and after I checked all the reading / writing permission all regions were working ...

Hope that helps you

Ill try to make this simple. I had no problems when I copied my region to disk, deleted the region from comp and then reloaded it. It worked just fine. No matter what processor you have or operating system is runing these files will still work with one another. First find the region(s) you wish to transfer in your MyDocuments folder, it will always be titled My Regions. Or it should be, theres only one anyway...I copied it to a single disk-not zipped up in some zip folder. You shouldnt need to cram it into one unless you havent enough room, but that is of course your choice. I for one feel uncomfortable changing around the formats of important files. Disks hold 700 MB of data Im sure one region alone will not surpass that of one disk unless he really has loaded up the region. You can right click the file of that region once you have found it and choose to see its properties to make sure it less than 700 MB. To be easy make a shortcut to your CD-R (burner drive) on the desktop of the old computer and drag the file to the shortcut. Including information on what kind of computer he was using would be helpful on the file copying specifics, but anyway there will still be an easy enough way to copy selected files to a disk. Once that has been done, get on the XPS, lucky kid!, and insert the disk and it will automatically ask you if you want to open a folder to view files and such. unless hes changed it but doubt it, he should be set up as primary owner. copy the file or click and drag to the same place you found it on the other computer. It'll transfer files for about 3 seconds since hes so lucky. Im sure youve already done something similar to this so this might not be of much help, however...having transferred other simcity files such as plugins to its plugind folder before transferring region files might be the problem. so try the region files first, just be sure youve loaded the game in the xps as it is loaded in the old one. You can use a flash drive too instead of a cd, it would be easier instead of using up a disk. Hope this helps, Tell us all if this works or not. We like to know if we have helped eachother out!

    Thanks for the replies.

We had used a thumb drive to transfer the folder, but we'll delete & try over.
Plus I will check the write permissions, etc as well.

From a computer person's standpoint, everything that I have seen here has been pretty much right on.  However, I've transferred regions with jump drives before and I never had any trouble.  I'm not entirely sure what your problem is, but if all else fails, then I would copy the whole regions folder from My Documents/Simcity 4 and try pasting that over the old one.  That is kind of extreme, but I can't think of anything else to do right now.

Also, tell your son that he might want to consider joining this site and starting a CJ.  I have a feeling that it would be rather popular.44.gif

Ok, first let me thank everyone for their  replies.

Turns out the problem was that he had built the cities after installing Rush Hour, so because we hadn't installed Rush Hour yet on his computer, the cities weren't readable.

Wow, I feel like kindof a dumbass...but isn't that usually the problem with computers & those of us who consider ourselves computer savvy?  I tried different drivers & all kinds of different elaborate fixes & didn't stop to think that maybe we needed to fully install all the expansion packs first.

Anyway, I have recommended the site to him & he may start looking through it soon; for now he's just glad to have his cities back & on a computer that runs roughly 300X as fast.

    Regards,
    Ryan
