I don't know about the YF-23, but the F/A-22 recently singlehandedly took out more than a dozen F-15's and F-16's before they even knew the F-22 was there. From what I've read the public is only aware of about 1/3 of it's technology. So the cost per plane is actually worth it.

Hate to tell you but it already did. The F-22 beat out the YF-23 in the Air Force's ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) program in the mid 90's. Because of this the YF-23 will never be anything other than a prototype.

Did the F-22 beat out the YF-23 based purely on performance?  Or was it a matter of economics and other factors also?  Don't know the answer to that one...can you provide any insight hummer?

The F-22 won because of a number of factors. It had greater manuverability and had thrust vectoring (a feature not found on the YF-23). Thrust vectoring allows the pilot to pivot the engines up an down increasing manuverability. The lack of the YF-23's manuverability really showed itself at lower speeds. Other than that the YF-23 was just a tad bit faster (not much as they both used the same engines).

There were financial reasons also. The YF-23 (developed by Northrop/McDonnell Douglas) would have never met the Air Forces budget. The F-22 (developed by Lockeed) was within the allowed budget. If you know anything about Northrop/McDonnell Douglas you will know that they designed the B-2, by far the most expensive plane ever produced (they are billion $ planes!). Lockeeds answer to a stealth bomber was the F-117. It was just as good of a stealth bomber, but again was within budget. The point is that Northrop/McDonnell Douglas have a history of going way over budget while still producing the same results. Now if you know anything about the F-22 you will know that congress tried on several occasions to cut funding for it because they ignorantly thought the cost wasn't worth it and the F-15 was good enough. Would congress have succeeded if the YF-23 had won? Very well could be. This is another of the many reasons the F-22 was chosen as the final design.

WOW, you know alot about this kind of stuff Hummer0328, but seeing as how your in the Airforce i can understand that. I like to read up about stuff like this and watch tv programs on it as well. I feel that I know alot about the military, but not as much a you! If you don't mind me asking what do you do in the airforce?

As for Congress trying to cut the buget of military programs, they should not be allowed to do this it should be done only by people at the pentagon who actully know what the hell these things do and why they need to be in the military, and not cut just because some bueracrat thinks it costs too much.  Do I even have to mention the Comanche project?

Well thats kind of universally agreed upon. I do love the looks of final production model of the F-22. It just looks so sleek. However, a final production model of the F-23 was never produced so all we have to look at is a crumby prototype.
