Hollywood is creatively bankrupt. What is the point of all these remakes? The originals are still quite available. Next, they will remake Gone with the Wind, I suppose.

Who will they cast in the Vivien Leigh part (Scarlett)? Madonna? Faugh!

It's funny the things that stay with you.

There was a time a few decades ago when, every time you went out with a guy, he would, at some point, act like Steve Martin (Excuuuusee ME!!!!).  and they all had the delusion that they were the first guy ever to do that and that they were wonderful at it.  It got really old, really quickly.

and I still don't want to see Steve Martin.  It hasn't worn off yet.   3.gif

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

heh, AFAIK, the only good remake(sort of) was the Batman movie.

Hollywood, as N_O_Body said, is creatively bankrupt.

i really like Steve Martin. and i was a huge fan of the Pink Panther series - i thought Peter Sellers was a genious.
but this smells like a train wreck to me. i seem to remember seeing some very early reviews a couple of months ago, where the viewers said the movie simply was not funny - not good for a comedy.
and, yes, many of Hollywood's movies have been so drab lately. i find myself going to the movies less and less nowadays. i went five times this year, really liked two movies (Batman Returns, Serenity), liked one (King Kong) and was disappointed with two (Star Wars, War of the Worlds). remarkably, all five of those movies are based on something else.
i find myself being drawn more and more towards the independent and foreign markets for my viewing pleasures.

no, this one looks more like a Trail of the Pink Panter, or Son of the Pink Panter rather than the original or A Shot In The Dark (both of which i highly recommend for some good chuckles).

That was kind of typical for a lot of Saturday Night Live stuff in its heyday anyway.  I'd lay dollars to doughnuts that few people today know that cheeseburger, cheesburger, cheeseburger or nevermind was referring to old SNL routines, or Steve Martin's other classic (w/ Dan Ackroyd) We're two wiiiiilllld and craaaaazzy guys!.  Just as well, actually.18.gif

All of the years, 2005 was a big years for remakes.  And pretty bad ones at that.  Over the years I can only think of two dramas that outdid the original, imho, The Fugitive and The Untouchables and maybe just one comedy, The Addams Family.  Well perhaps after the so called slump of 2005, Hollywood will look at being more creative.

I have no idear how Steve Martin will do as Inspector Clouseau.  It would be one iconic performer redoing the work of another iconic performer (Peter Sellars).  The problem I see is that the original Clouseau was blithely unaware and unself-conscious about what's going on about him.  We laughed at the character w/out the character's knowledge.  And Peter Sellars could really as actor hide under anything and any disguise.  Sterve Martin's comic personas have tended to be self-aware, tried to be hip (sometimes too hard & that sometimes was part of the joke), and tried to let the audience in on the joke.  We could always see him winking at us behind his pratfalls.   But who knows, I also think Steve Martin has actually become a good serious actor over the years.  So maybe this might not be a rehash of some of his other characters.

I wish they wouldn't remake those old gems, they never seem to add anything, and more times than not the remake just sucks. If they could add something, it would be different, but they remake them expecting us to 'enjoy' the remake just because a new 'star' is in them. They have started showing ads on the tube for this movie and like other remakes it just makes me cringe.

Well, not being old enough to have any qualms about Steve Martin, I think the movie will be hilarious. It's going to be pretty different from the classic Peter Sellers ones, though. I'm afraid it will wind up with too much plot, and not enough insanity. And where's Cato? He's a necessity.
I also hate the way the announcer says Jaque Clue-soo, instead of Clu-zou.

I have to agree though, this movie will probably not do so well. And yes, there have been a huge amount of remakes lately, and yes, I try to stay away from the movie theater these days too, but I still think I'll enjoy it for the humor, if nothing else.

I think for those of us old enough to have seen Peter Sellers in the role of Inspector Clouseau it's too big of a stretch to imagine Steve Martin playing Peter Sellers playing Inspector Clouseau.  Joesocwork expressed the difference between the two actors perfectly and I can't imagine Steve martin pulling this off.  I, personally, feel he did his best work on SNL and it's been mostly dowhill for him since. 8.gif

I agree with a lot of others here in that I believe that what Hollywoood is offering us, with a few exceptions, is pretty sad.  I used to go to 20-40 movies a year (2-3 a month) now I go about 6-8 times a year and half of those are a waste of money.  The lst movie I enjoyed was The Chronicles of Narnia.  King Kong, aside from the special effects, was a major disappointment. 10.gif

i saw a preview of the movie, and it only reaffirms my fears.
Peter Sellers played Clouseau as a very incompetent man, but he did it in a very laid back manner.
Martin's version seems to yell a lot more - at least in the 30 second spot i saw.
the thing which made Sellers' portrayal so funny was the quiet dignity his Clouseau suffered through while inflating a balloon attached to his back and floating out the window (for instance). i don't see that happening in this case.
of course, on the other side of the spectrum: Alan Arkin portrayed Clouseau in the late '60s - his was also unsuccessful, as many critics said Arkin played Jacques as being TOO laid back.

It's interesting that they are making all these re-makes and sequels and so on because I read an article about this 4 years ago that said that Hollywood would be creating remakes for the next decade because Hollywood has run out of creative ideas.

Anyways, right now I can't think of anyone else who could play Jacques Clouseau, but I could be wrong. Out of all the movies of 2006 (which really isn't many yet), I'm not too sure if this movie is promising or not. I guess I'll just have to see this movie and make up my own mind!
