I Got Spammed!

Believe it or not, for the first time in my life, I received a spam message.  I know that might not seem like much, but people have previously never found my email account.  Now, I fear a barrage of them.3.gif  No, I'm not really concerned about getting a load of stuff that I can't handle (Yahoo correctly identified it as garbage and directed it to my bulk folder like it should have).

That leaves me with an interesting question though.  How often do you get spam?

My older email account (the one I'm registered here with) recives some spam, maybe 2-3 items a day. The account that I have at Manhattan college never gets spammed (unless you count notices about things I don't care about on campus as spam). That's likely because I haven't used that email adress to register anywhere or anything, though.

Gmail usually filters out 10-20 messages a day as SPAM...I usually look quickly at it for anything that might should have made it through and delete it...I don't need an iPod nano, I don't want to test the PS3 and I really don't want a discount on Viagra....

Aside from a couple of messages about a trial copy of ReadIris that I never did download, the only spam I've gotten is from Yahoo.  Sad part about all that is that it you can't tell Yahoo that it's messages are spam.  The spam filters see that it is from Yahoo and they automatically let the stuff through.

When I used to have AOL I constantly had SPAM. Now as a Comast user I have never had SPAM ever since then.

My university email account gets spammed like crazy. I get about 20 of them per day, but they are not directed to my email name specifically, rather a group that my email address is listed under. The group is for all the architecture students at University of Michigan, so I really don't want to take myself off or I'll miss updates. For some reason the group administrator won't turn the spam filter on.

All of my spam (well, a few exceptions) are in Chinese or Arabic. And apparently, there is a company in Japan thats trying to sell me refreshments over the internet.

I've had my current E-Mail accounts for 1.5 years and 1 year respectively. I've had spam a grand total of three times, one og which was a Nigerian bank scam that made me laugh18.gif. I was rather surprised that made it to my Inbox.

I don't get any spam on gmail suprisingly..just before my Yahoo! account Closed I got 1 spam message..so I reported it...in fact that email account was so glitched...it wouldn't accept most computer registration emails...it counted my moms emails as spam and it didn't send messages half the time...my gmail one doesn't have spam but thats problobly because I give my email to Corporations.I usally only register onto fansites and such and not onto bigger sites.that and the fact that I hardly get and send emails anyway.

If you count the stuff that a person gets from sites they are registered with, then I've gotten spam before.  This, however, was the same kind of garbage that dev was mentioning.  My benefactor wanted to sell me some legitimate Windows products.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but something smells phishy about that email.17.gif

I don't get spam in my GMail account. However, several buddies that I have never heard of are quite concerned about my performace with a significant other in bed, or would like to offer me a discount on Windows products. The Windows products spam is filtered to the Trash, but the performance enhancing drugs spam is sent to the spam folder.

My ISP filters most spam, and if I get any serious porn or fraud, I report it both to them and to phonebusters (OPP fraud squad who pass the porn on to the RCMP's Project P). I have some sites that I identify as junk senders in Thunderbird, and that seems to get most everything else. I get two or three a day in my junk folder.

I get very little spam on my main email, 2 or 3 a day max, but then I use a program callle Mail Washer to filter it out.  On the other 4 emails, 3 get none and probably never will as they are private and rarely given out.  The 4th one is the one I use to sign up for stuff or register online.  It gets quite a bit of spam but I use filters to get rid of most of it.

Now that I think about it, I'm really lucky. I've only recieved one spam message in the entire time I've had an e-mail address (bout 2 or 3 years) and it was sent to bulk, and then deleted.

I have had my Gmail account since June of last year, and I have never gotten any spam. I am amazed, since it is the account I use to register to everything. 1.gif

One thing I've found out is if you know another language, register for an account with a domain name ending in something like .com.mx, .com.ar, .it, etc., as most mass mailers look for addresses ending in .com or .net.  But make sure you don't use the address too much on websites.

EDIT: If you don't know another language, you can still get an English-speaking account like .ca (Canada) or .co.uk (United Kingdom).

Judging from what ya'll have posted, it would seem that only SkiGeek seems to get a lot of spam.  I would like to take this time to thank Ski for her wonderful job of taking all of our spam so we don't have to deal with it.3.gif9.gif

LOL -- well, it probably has something to do with the fact that I have several email addresses (9 last time I counted) and some of them have been around for over 8 years.  Plenty of time to get on silly mailing lists.

You thought you got spam problems... check out the Ebaums World Forums recently. During the weekend of January 7th and 8th, the Ebaum's World forums were raided by users from YTMND, Newgrounds, and Something Awful, among other forumers of websites like these, after alledged content stealing from an animated gif called Lindsey Lohan Dosen't Change Facial Expressions. Ebaum's World owners got upset at YTMND's creater, and threatened to go after YTMND's members with the FBI Cyber Terrorism Unit. People at YTMND just used mocked Neil Bauman (one of Ebaum's World creators) and made jokes about his grammar and letter writing. They even mocked the words Yiddish Cup.

I've heard of that kind of stuff before.  I'm just glad that it doesn't happen here.

EDIT: Well, I just checked my email, and I got another spam message.  Two messages in three days = THEY'VE GOT ME!6.gif  Oh well.  It's funny though, that a guy from hotmail would offer to consolidate the debt that I don't have.9.gif

I did receive LOTS of spam on my original dial-up on MSN and then cable on COX.  I haven't gotten nearly so much on DSL, Verizon but a few still gets through.  The spammers become so clever for the filters like mispelling key filter words and putting the message in pictures.  I may switch back to cable & rearrange my address again.  I initially set an internet site for my junk mail whenever I go to sign up on various sites, but their filter is so good I now use that to receive my regular e-mail.  The filters at work are pretty good but a few still pop there; as if there isn't enough clutter as it is.
