Tonight's leaders debate was the last one (in English) before the January 23rd election. It was for a very important debate for both Prime Minister Paul Martin to try to give the Liberals the momentum back and also for Stephen Harper to convince the voters that a Conservative government woul bring positive change to our country.

Canadians, say what you think!
(While staying respectful obviously)

RESPECTFUL?!?!?!?!???!!?! LOLOLOLLOLOL!!!!!!!!!

The conservative swanna suck the Yanks metaphorical teet, The fiberals wanna pocket our tax dollars, the NDP keep taking credit for good things and laying the blame on everyone else, The BQ is technically against it's own existance, and the Greens dont have a chance in hell.

Neither do the fringe parties.

Just hope we don't get a conservative minority with no seats in Quebec, or it's goodbye Canada.14.gif

Politics aren't allowed here anyway.1.gif

Actually, the conservatives are gaining alot of popularity in Quebec, and BQ has falled to 4th place with 11% support, after NDP with 17 I think. So it is actually looking quite possible.

Also, did you notice.. Their positions and ties..

From how they saw it, right to left: Harper, blue tie; Gilles, I think it was teal; Giggle-Pants , red; Layton, orange. Weird, eh?

It seems that Stephen has been boring enough to get people asleep here. Will the province most to the left elect some representatives from a party far on the right? I had problems understanding why W was elected in the US. I might have such a problem by the end of January...

The debates at school where everywhere. Kind of depressing with some of things said and all.

I'm with vid on this one. Though to me, the NDP may be the best option. The Liberals lied to us, the conservatives are socially backwords with the abolishing of same sex marriage and the military spending thing. Problem is, the NDP ain't that great either. The greens have a horrible leader and the Bloq want to seperate from Canada. It's pretty confusing.

For outsiders, here's the party stances:

Conservative - Stephen Harper = right wing
Liberal - Paul Martin = left of center
NDP - Jack Layton = left wing
Bloq Quebecois - Gilles Duceppe = right of center apparently, correct me on this one.

I can't vote yet unfortunately.

Tthe BQ is tricky, it goes from far left wint to moderate right wing, Gilles is one of their more moderate members (appeals to people) he's a bit farthur right than Martin I believe. The Green party is moderate left socially, moderate right economically, more libertarian and environmentalist.

The only thing to worry about with an NDP government would probably be spending the surplus away. Because they're a more left wing party, they'd appeal to Quebeckers (most liberal province)

Last I saw, Conservatives had 39% of the vote, Liberals only 27. Support for the BQ seems to be dropping in Quebec, and some of the Conservative parties strongest new supporters are coming from Quebec.

The thing about the debate that raises alarms for me is what Martin said about repealing the Notwithstanding Cluase, it kinda just came from nowhere. I wonder if he even ran that by the party, or if he just got the idea instantly, in a pathetic attempt to get support. Either way, he seemed really nervous and stressed throughout the debate. Gilles was pretty entertaining. Lots of people said aside from the fact that he's a sepratist they'd vote for him, and I agree, he's probably the most calm collected guy there.3.gif

Maybe if I say Layton's name enough he'll pull ahead of everyone and win.

Well, IMHO, Steven and his boys are what we need to clean up the current mess. Two terms minimum to unstamp the mandarins and get the bright red L off their behinds.

Paul deserves to be howling in the wilderness. I hope Gilles has someone who can take his seat away.

Gilles is OK, but he is not a national party. Only in Canada do you get a party with a large number of seats in the national government that is dedicated to picking up their ball and going home.

Similin' Jack will smile, tax, smile, spend, smile, tax, smile, spend, right into the biggest fiscal hole you ever saw.

Jim Harris is a voice crying in the wilderness, but may even get some seats this time. Say about 3, and I hope he gets his.

Paul Hellyer's Canadian Heritage Party (CHP) candidates will probably lose most of their deposits.

Others? Who knows. I don't think any of them have favourite sons running.

Anybody want to bet whether its the stake for Tony Valieri? I hear Shiela wants to light the pyre.

Looks my riding will go NDP for sure. Last election was close, but the liberals won by a little over the NDP. But thank god Pat O'Brien is gone, I can't belive our riding went for him. A liberal party member with conservative tastes. Yuch! The majority say Irene Mathyiseen (can't spell her last name) will take the riding over the other two, Glen Pearson (Liberal) and Glen Miller (Con) by a long shot.

(East) London - Fanshawe all the way! 44.gif

I will never, ever, vote for the conservatives. Banning same-sex marriage, joining the money-wasting war in Iraq, cutting social programs, privatized health-care which would make many families savings go up in smoke, a crappy and poorly funded education system, and wasting our surplus on the military doesn't make any sense to me. I know that the liberals and NDP are problematic too, but the conservative's agenda seems to want to destroy the country that I've been proud of living in. I'm all for tax cuts, but the negative outways the postives by far. Look at the last right-wing government we had, Kim Cambell and Brian Mulroney. He was quite possibly the worst prime minister in Canadian history. He and Kim went from having 169 seats in 1988, to 2 in the 1993 election. That says something.

But thats just my opinion. Just vote for whoever will meet your political beliefs and ignore my rant which I just needed to get off my chest after a long, depressing day.

Boy, did the gLiberal propagandists ever get to you! Steven has done none of these things, as he has never been in power. So how could he? You should try keeping a more open mind.

As far as the dynamic duo (Kim and Brian) are concerned, they had run their course as do all Canadian governments. When things get to the point where we won't put up with any more, we usually elect a different party. Smilin' Jack isn't prepared to govern any more than Bob Rae was in Ontario.

Since the BQ is only in Quebec, the only logical party to form the next govenment is the Conservatives. They are only slightly right of centre, and if same-sex marriage is an issue with you, god bless you. I don't think it will even come up in Parliament.

Much more important to all of us is cutting the GST, and getting rid of the daddy knows best day care of the gLiberals. $100 per month isn't enough, but its a start. We sure know how to spend our own money better than a spendthrift set of Ottawa mandarins. They all need a comeuppance, so Conservative is the way to fly for now.

The next time, we get another crack at them, worst case is five years. Five years is almost no time at all from my perspective. The first PM of Canada for me was W.L. MacKenzie King, so I've seen lots of them come and go.

IMHO, there will be a Mulroney type landslide, because people are fed up to here with no-action promises that may or may not be acted on in five years.

Five year plans are what killed the Soviet Union. There was a story current among some of my Polish friends a few years ago that if the Soviets ever had a five year plan on the Gobi desert there would soom be a shortage of sand. Just look at the Aral sea.

Much more important to all of us is cutting the GST

Like I said, I barely pay GST. But rich people, WHOA! Thousands of dollars a month.

The GST goes to low income families. Without it, we'd see more poverty, and more crime. And, like whats-his-name said, beer and popcorn2.gif

It'll probably be a Conservative government, and it probably won't last long. It'd be funny if they did last past 2008 though, and a Democrat won in the US. Canada would be looking south to a more liberal government.41.gif

How should you vote? Take this survey.

Hmm the first five year plan made by Stalin took only 4 years actually, but how many lives did it cost?I don't think I'd ever want to see those types of plans anytime soon....although you can't deny progress....

What will make Canada a more progreesive nation you ask?Either the NDP or the liberals....but thats just an ignorant Californian talking....

I used to be just as conservative as many, but many years under the Bush administration and my reading of history from 1870's to 1960's has really opened my political mind....

I learned the ideas of many governments and the parties that has existed....wheather it be the failed Populist parties of America,Facist parties in West Europe, the Meinshivic parties of Russia or the Boxer's of China...all governments need the backing of the people.I didn't mention those parties for any political reason, but more or less to show I've read a book or two on history in the last 5 years....lol...anyway I personally belive the best government is one that does things in the name of the people. Why else would the people follow these governments or their parties if they wearn't about improving the nation, people or economy? They wouldn't follow the party if it did nothing and that seems like what every conservative party wants....The conservatives want no change and to spend everything on the army or the building of needless weapons and reaserch...ok maybe the conservitives arean't that bent on war,but many conservitives know how to waste a penny or two wheater then giving it back to the people...but in the long run its the people's beliefs that will forge their loyalty to the party...so one must vote for what he or she belives in...

Anyway like I said vote for what you think is best for Canada....

Cause right now I actually like how Canada is doing and its doing better then the US....3.gif

Yeah I was really surprised with the Conservative support in Quebec. The last election was less than 2 years ago and they couldn't manage to win one seat out of 75 and they're heading towards being the best federalist party in Quebec. Too bad I can't vote yet either, but I would most certainly give my support to Harper.

As a matter of fact, I hate the liberal party. Actually, I don't like any of the parties really.

I'm not going by what harper did, just his party's platform. I've been to each party's site, and just thought that the NDP was slightly better, but even they are a little bleh. Being a right wing government, that tends to be what the conaservatives agree on. They probably will keep their promises, but their promises, to me, aren't that great. Working for East London Optimist, I've seen poor families on welfare who are frightened of a Harper government. I agree with a few of the things they said, but the rest just doesn't fit in with me. I do want taxes to go slightly down, but social programs are important to poorer people too. But I know not to believe everything said by politicians, I'm just an idiot anyways.

I've had enough people hate my guts in the last week (most for no reason). Though I did bring this onto myself for being an ass and a jerk.

Maybe I should leave this site. I think I just made a lot of people angry at me. Hopefully the rest of 2006 doesn't go like this.41.gif

I've made 10 people hate me in the past 4 weeks, and I didn't leave! If you leave, they win. And we can't have that.

I took that test for a 3rd time, and once again got NDP. And yeah, my favourite is number 20 as well. We really need to work on defending our water ways, especially the Northwest Passage and Grand Banks.

@justanothersim86: Vid is right. If you leave, you are just running away, and the haters win. I don't hate you, but some of the things you said are rather unenlightened.

A drop in the GST affects everyone. Poor people pay it, but get it back, partially. I got my GST rebate cheque today. Frankly, I don't like the enforced savings aspect of pay and get a rebate. Cash looks better in my pocket than the government's.

On the other hand, if a wealthy person buys something that costs, say $10,000. The GST on this is $700. If the rate were 6% he would save $100. So would you if you spent that kind of loot.

If I had to replace my car, a direct replacement would cost over $35,000. [About two years income]. At current rates, GST adds $2,450. A 6% GST would be $2,100. Leaves me $350 for gas which would fill the tank around five times at present rates. That's about a month's gas or a month's groceries.

On my income we often decide between gas or groceries this week. I live in a rural area.

The NDP bashing was a civics class thing, I just thought that I had infuriated the right wingers on this site.

I have nothing against people voting conservative. It's a democracy, vote for who you think will benefit you and others. N_O_Body: Now knowing that you live in a rural area, I can see how some of their laws will benefit you. But me living in a city, and in the poorer side of town, I prefer the pro-social programs. I never personally said conservatives were bad and stupid people. Many, like Y_A_H and N_O_Body are friendly and intelligent individuals. Just the jerks in my civics class pushed me over the edge, but today was a lot better thankfully.

I'm not terribly concerned with high taxes. I'm more concerned with how the tax money is spent. A good case in point is the fact that I was never able to get health insurance in the US. In Canada, I have it. And I'm more than happy to pay the taxes to get it.

Layton can tax me all he wants, so long as the money is spent well.

Harper is too Bush-like to me. He did say at the beginning that he wanted to revisit the same-sex marriage issue, but backtracked (or flip-flopped as they would say in US politics). Still, backtrack or no, the fact that he would even consider it scares the bejeebers out of me.

If Harper wins, I just hope he doesn't institute a Fletcher government. Governer Ernie Fletcher of Kentucky won the election on the promise that he would clean up the corrupt Kentucky government but instead has managed to preside over a more corrupt government than the last one.

The NDP is the only party that seems right for my very liberal tendencies.

Partially? Our GST rebate is about 400% what we pay in GST every month. That's a little bit more than partially.2.gif We put the GST towards paying our phone/internet and grocery bills, if anyone is wondering. Whats left over goes to pizza, and spending money for my brother (since my dad spends all of his money on crap)

Guessing game time. Background: I voted in the advanced poll today and it took half an hour to get through the crowded polling place.

    My prediction:

Steven moves into 24 Sussex Drive.
    Smilin' Jack moves into Stornaway.
Paul goes back to running CSL.
    Gilles moves into the Citadel.
Jim Harris goes apartment hunting in Ottawa.

Well, while I may not be at all happy about a Tory government, I at least won't be too sad to see Paul Martin go. I do appreciate the same-sex marriage thing, but other than that, he's more than worn out his welcome.

Jack Layton is proof that people with views like mine will never be world leaders. Pity. There should be more of us. 2.gif Your loss!

At least I can console myself with the fact that a Harper government won't last long. I predict that it will last as long as it takes for Harper and Bush to agree on Canadian paricipation in US missle defense, which he just said he wants to do.

    Any bets?

P.S. Since N_O_Body can't seem to refer to Jack Layton by name instead of jibe, all future posts on this subject by me will refer to the Tory leader as Darth Harper. 2.gif

I took the quiz on the site vidioman linked to, and both times it said I would vote for The Bloc Quebecois. What are they for/against?

Bill ORLY says the Conservatives are going to take the election.

Thank You for the Continued Support!

Simtropolis depends on donations to fund site maintenance costs.
Without your support, we just would not be in our 24th year online!  You really help make this a great community. *:thumb:

But we still need your support to stay online. If you're able to, please consider a donation to help us stay up and running. This helps sustain a platform where we can share our community creations for years to come.

    STEX Collections

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!

Thank you for reading and enjoy the site!
